CornerBOI Curbside Healthcare
The Corner Body Owner Interface, or (Corner BOI) is a Patient Navigator. Patient navigators foster empowerment and provide information that enhances the ability for patients to make good health care decisions and receive better medical care. The user experience is simple…. The user approaches a light pole or small cell tower with a corner BOI telehealth kiosk, Look up and are warmly welcomed by an Avatar… speech is used to interact, and the avatar leads diagnostic testing. Data is transmitted to an AI, and health information and support is delivered in real-time to the user. Four interface elements include:
Environmental Sensing to understand the micro-environment, Facial Recognition, Speech Recognition and Augmented Reality create the interface. Healthcare elements Body Temperature, Blood Pressure, Pulse, and Heart Rate, EKG’s and a VOC’s E-Nose can test for 17 diseases including different Cancers, Kidney Disease, Liver Disease, Pneumonia, and Diabetes.
Develop a 21st century healthcare system that is responsive to the needs of all. We have designed an approach for improving the overall health in under-served communities. The focus is on using IoT Technology and a solution goal of:
- Saving Lives
- Saving Money
- Improving Health
We focused on the homeless community for a test bed. Based on interviews identified three areas of concern, Housing, Healthcare, and Jobs. The range of health problems in the homeless and indigent communities are large due to issues like drug and alcohol abuse, exposure, poor diets. When looking at their “Journey” we noticed a lot of pressure is added to existing healthcare systems like public health clinics and ER’s. Appointment waits can be several weeks long at clinics, and ER’s are stressed to their limit with indigent care… the cost impacts on Medicaid add up to more than $16 billion dollars per year to tax-payers. 44000 citizens Die Each Year Because They Cannot Afford Healthcare?
The Cost of the Uninsured Citizens is more than $30 Billion in the US. Our goal “improve the Convenience, Cost and Quality of this community’s health experience while lowering the cost impacts on government” and improving the customer’s healthcare Journey.
We are evolving an approach that looks to build “User Trust” necessary to Capture Public Biometric Data for improving the overall health in under-served communities. The homeless and indigent communities are the initial population we would like to serve. We’ve reached out to members of these communities conducting interviews with both individuals and families when possible. It would be misleading to attempt to lump the issues raised into any one classification, but there are a few categories of potential users we interacted with the would be supported by this solution.
- Homeless men and women with mental or drug related concerns.
- Homeless men with criminal arrest.
- People the lost income.
CornerBOI is intended notify the user of the potential of having contracted several of the life threating diseases that impact the homeless community, and to facilitate acquiring the help need in a timely manner. This is done by identifying Bio-Markers in the breath that are related to specific disease and then…. Predictive Analytics…to analyze the data that’s been collected. The software can then set health appointments, call for immediate help.
The product concept uses a pole mounted Kiosk made from Core-Ten Steel, and 9mm Ballistic Glass. Connected to a 5G Small Cell Network. What we want to prove it that we can take environmental, vital sign and e-nose sensor data, send it to a database and onto a neural network for training and analysis.
All the sensors, databases and Neural Networks…. will be running in the background… and what the user encounters on approach is the Avatar interface. For the proof of concept Avatar” … what we are suggesting is to use. Human–Robot Interaction (HRI)...HRI provides Empathy… It adapts itself to our desires and orders, ……and can recognize… and simulate emotions.
An initial interaction with the CornerBOI Avatar Interface would include the collection of some background info like this.
The next question might be, what about the HIPAA privacy concerns?
- HIPAA requires health insurers and health-care providers meet certain privacy and security requirements.
- Corner BOI is not an insurance provider or health-care provider.
- Devices like Fitbit and the Apple Health app collect and store health-care data….and that kind of data is unregulated.
- However, we could create a masking policy that removes the 18 key identifiers from biometric datasets.
We also believe that there is an opportunity here for the users to take ownership of their data. We’ve created User Privacy Fact sheet. The User Privacy Fact sheet … lays out how users and the city could be compensated…by selling different types of biometric data…. using a Life Data Marketplace, and a cryptocurrency. A life data marketplace aims to facilitate the sale/purchase of human data between the General Public and Pharmaceutical companies
- Enable equitable access to affordable and effective health services
- Prototype
- New application of an existing technology
Exhaled breath not only contains high concentrations of carbon dioxide and water vapor, but also contains a signature of all chemicals in the blood that have at least some vapor pressure to allow their exchange from the blood into the exhaled breath through the lungs.
This solution uses NFC CARD's to create an electronic nose (e-nose) capable of identifying those chemical signatures. Along with a wireless connection to neural network connection that identifies specific diseases that are potentially life threatening to the user community. The product is light weight easily maintained. The e-nose for disease solution to date has primarily been focused on a two-step process that requires a clinical setting to carry out using Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) an analytical method that combines the features of gas-chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a sample. The innovation here eliminates the need for clinical analysis by using the conversion of an NFC tag into a CARD. This enables wireless rf detection of chemical analytes with a smartphone. NFC-enabled smartphones communicate with NFC tags by simultaneously energizing the NFC tag with an alternating magnetic field. This new technology was developed by” Joseph M. Azzarelli, Katherine A. Mirica, Jens B. Ravnsbæk, and Timothy M. Swager. CornerBOI uses this technology as the core to deliver instant identification of health concerns to the user along with IoT to simplify an interface and communicate with required healthcare providers.
“Portable chemical sensors are needed to manage and protect human health and quality of life. An example is sensors for point-of-care diagnosis of disease, connecting sensors with information technology through wireless rf communication is a promising approach to enable cost-effective onsite chemical detection and analysis of disease. The Corner BOI concept demonstrates how incorporating carbon-based chemiresponsive materials into the electronic circuitry of commercial NFC tags using an NFC-enabled devices to relay information regarding the chemical environment (e.g., presence or absence of a chemical) surrounding the NFC tag.” PNAS December 23, 2014 could serve as an early identifier of disease in humans.
The NFC Tag technology removes the current need for a two step gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analytical method of disease identification in exhaled breath, and the need for a lab setting for analysis. The NFC CARDS would allow for non-invasive real-time in the field analysis of a breath as a method for identifying key life threatening diseases impact undeserved urban communities.

The Problem: The range of health problems in the homeless and indigent communities are large due to issues like drug and alcohol abuse, exposure, poor diets. When looking at their “Journey” we noticed a lot of pressure is added to existing healthcare systems like public health clinics and ER’s.
Goal: We want to improve the Convenience, Cost and Quality of this community’s health experience while lowering the cost impacts on Medicaid and improving the customer’s healthcare Journey.
Our Path: We developed a public Wi-Fi pilot a recently, but now the big telecoms are rolling out 5G nationwide.
Assumptions: There will be several opportunities related to 5G rollout that could greatly improve the opportunities for the development of the CornerBOI AI components. This is an area that will have potential positive impacts for analyzing health data in real-time both at the edge and on the cloud. It’s these innovations that allow CornerBOI to transform a “20th century health care system into a 21st century fully integrated system that is responsive to the needs of all citizens.
Responsibility: Creation of a person-centered interface to allow for identifying Bio-Markers in the breath related to specific disease use AI to analyze data collected. Uses a pole mounted Kiosk made from Steel, and Ballistic Glass. Connected to a 5G Small Cell Network.
Indicators: Reduce appointment waits clinics, and reduce stress ER’s due to indigent care lower cost impacts on Medicaid reduction in the number of citizens that Die Each Year Because They Cannot Afford Healthcare?
- Women & Girls
- Children and Adolescents
- Rural Residents
- Urban Residents
- Very Poor/Poor
- Low-Income

The project is currently in the concept phase, and not serving customers.
The next goal we be to deal with HIPAA privacy concerns.
The Ultimate Corner BOI Elements would simplify the prototype down to four elements which include:
- Chemically actuated resonant devices (CARDs) for the e-nose
- Digitally printed flexible electronic circuits for environmental sensing
- Flexible organic light-emitting diode (Flexible OLED)
- Incorporate a Healthcare neural network
We are small with out the necessary funding or connections to do much the RD necessary to get a product to market. We think that opportunities for greater exposure to potential partners and funding through challenges like SOLVE might give us the momentum needed to advance the CornerBOI solution to market.
We will continue our efforts to partner with larger organizations to advance the RD. We have had preliminary success in twp previous pitch competitions (HeroX DC Gigabit 10X Challenge Finalist and the GSA Better Government Pitch competition Visionary Award winner). Right now competitions and innovation challenges are the path we are likely to follow until we can get seed funding to focus on the project full-time.

Project Concept: Telehealth
The Goals of “Corner BOI” are to simultaneously:
- Increase the quality of care for low Income communities and the homeless,
- Improve the health of the indigent populations, and
- Reduce the per capita cost of care on the tax payer.
Problem Statement We have observed that the government has not been unable to reduce the cost of health insurance for citizen. This is due in part to the use of emergency care (ER) by indigent communities as primary care. This use of the ER has created a negative impacts on the cost of health care for tax payers. These cost are seen in higher health insurance cost for citizens and reduced face to face interaction time with primary care doctors.
Ideation: How might we improve the health of lower income and indigent communities, by using technologies that create an experience where care is instant, convenient, and provides minimal primary healthcare to citizen; while lowering the cost of healthcare for the general public, and financial impacts to the federal tax payer.
Corner BOI is a location based smart city kiosk powered by an augmented reality (AR), and speech recognition interface to lower the barrier for user interaction, SmartRhythm monitoring to evaluate the relationship between heart rate ranges and other health factors. A breathalyzer which can be used to diagnose 17 different diseases, including lung cancer, irritable bowel syndrome and multiple sclerosis from a single breath, finger temperature to estimate core body temp, predictive analytics to record and remember the citizen users via facial recognition. Partnerships with local clinics, pharmacy’s big box retailers and other that provide related health aids could be include to provide simple services, regular health checks, and to provide discounted medicines to those that consistently make Corner BOI health check-ins.
A 2011 study by Anna Sommers and Peter Cunningham released by the National Institute for Health Care Reform found that hospital re-admissions within a month of discharge have cost over $16 billion each year. Telehealth can be used to reduce re-admissions and other adverse events at a cost that is less than the cost of the problems themselves”.
There is a potential for $billions in savings to the taxpayer that can be used to lower the cost of health insurance for all. We believe our path to financial success starts with obtaining grants to pilot prototypes, partnerships with local city governments, pharma, and then raise capital through VC's.
Supportive community of peers: It would be helpful to obtain advice from students and professors at MIT and the Solve program to improve the solution by providing feedback and advice.

The Corner BOI will use AI to both simplify the user experience with a Human Robot Interface (HRI) enabling access to the care on demand; providing 24/7 monitoring of user care concerns in real-time; preserving key health data to improve the health of the user community; improve the training of a health AI algorithm by providing a wider range of health data; and reducing data bias by providing data from a wider community.
The user experience is simple. Approach a light pole or a 5G small cell tower with a corner BOI telehealth kiosk. Look up and be welcomed by an (HRI)Avatar. The User uses speech to interact, and the HRI leads the user in a few diagnostic tests. That data is transmitted to a VOC’s E-Nose NFC CARD for analysis. That data is stored and transmitted to a cloud based AI that identifys Bio-Markers in the breath that are related to specific disease and then use Predictive Analytics…to analyze the data and the Data is store for training a Artificial Neural Network (ANN).
AI elements include: Facial Recognition,Speech Recognition, HRI to create a Person Centered interface. Along with a health care neural network.
Corner BOI is new technology, and innovation that address urban health risks are integral to designing, building, and retrofitting cities that make people of all ages and abilities healthier and happier. Corner BOI aims to create a solution focused on improving the physical health of people in cities by enabling equitable access to affordable and effective health services, especially through community health clinics, for those most undeserved.
We would work to develop and implement prototype our solution in both urban and rural communities.
