Detective Bracelet
To build a healthy city, the first step is to make sure that the most important components of it -- all humans -- are happy and healthy. Two things are preventing this to happen: lack of awareness/delayed diagnosis and lack of access to medical care. This solution is a design and build a noninvasive and interactive smart device to help people recognize and suppress even the potential of hurt and provide suggestions and recovery plan for physical condition and report psychological abnormality. Such device will benefit the society with its ability of detecting and diagnosing functions and its good intention to popularize health care access.
The problems leading to this innovative solution include the lack of access to physical and psychological care. There are two main reasons stopping people from reaching out for help. First, some people are not clear about their physical states or do not realize that there are negative changes happening inside their brains and bodies. Busy or inexperienced parents may miss crucial stages of developments of diseases on their children. For example, according to research from King’s College London, 31% of children under 18 had suffered a traumatic experience and 8% of children experience PTSD by the time they reach 18. The bracelet, capable of detecting the potential of development of psychological disorder will mitigate the situation. The other thing stopping people from going to a doctor is financial ability. Some people cannot afford an ambulance, and some people cannot afford medicine prescribed by doctors. Hopefully, this project can be sponsored by socially responsible companies and supported by the government, so people who don’t have full access to health care can be helped. This solution will inform users their current health states.
To help children is the first focus of Detective Bracelet-- a second phase will be tailored toward adults and will be inclusive for people under poverty line.
Children should be the first beneficent group. Prevention of stress disorders should take place as early as possible, which is a crucial step of improving public health. We are serving families first and foremost.The Detective Bracelet, non-invasive, will not hinder children’s activities and it will tell a story that children themselves cannot easily describe, and parents may at times not want to see. Detective Bracelet will begin with a survey distributed to children for the preference of color and patterns. And we need to specifically identify instability and psychological challenges for each specific cultural group -- for example for high school students: a lack of sleep, lack of personal space, lack of connection. When coping with psychological issue, to protect users’ privacy and rights, we only provide simple intervention of reporting the irregular signals sent out by bodies. With consent from users’ we can give optimal suggestions or reach out to doctors.
Our solution is to create a bracelet that has both high intelligence quotient and high emotional quotient. Adapting from traditional Chinese medicine practice, based on people’s pulse and tongue color, this artificial intelligent product will be able to detect potential disease that the users are likely to develop or more susceptible to. Besides physical health issue detection, the bracelet will also be connected to a form of brain activity detector, which will report mental issues to the bracelet. Without going to the hospital, users will get corresponding solutions and advice for each disease and can take care of themselves. By reducing the need of going to a hospital or a doctor and utilizing data collected through the bracelet, more doctors or researchers in medicine field can focus on exploring the unknown world. Hence, this bracelet can drive the development of many fields and industries. Producing and wearing this kind of bracelet will be more economical in the long-run.
The project can be broken down into two parts: physical and psychological disease and potential detection.
Physical diseases can be diagnosed applying traditional Chinese medical practice of pulse-feeling and a color scan of the user's tongue. Depending on different types of pulses like feeble pulse, slippery pulse, irregular-rapid pulse, intermittent pulse, and etc. with daily index, the bracelet can function as a doctor. Combining western and eastern treatment, Detective Bracelet will provide optimal recovery plan.
For the part dealing with psychological issues, the system will be a little more complicated. First, there will be a scoring system for detection. As shown in various research, there are subtle physical changes will show signs of stress and depression and other negative feelings, such as change of body temperature, change of pulse, sweat, and etc. There is no such physical change will secure the certainty of crisis. So a scoring or diagnosing system built upon massive machine learning and collation is needed. To protect users’ privacy and rights, we will only provide a reasonable and sophisticated diagnosis or simply a conversation. After building an international association, gathering warm-hearted and cool-minded experts, with consent from users, we can provide treatment and further intervention.

There are technology and systems detecting what we are trying to collect -- physical information including things like heart beat, body temperature, hormone level -- and there are researches on subtle body changes as indications or warning signs of physiological and psychological crisis. But our solution connects the two parts and provides a comprehensive solution to address the sadly growing emotional health crisis. And we are taking one more step forward regarding Human-Computer or Human-AI interaction and social dynamics.
To be more specific, we are trying to create a scoring system using collective wisdom to diagnose users’ physiological and psychological status by uploading all existing western medicine achievements and traditional Chinese medical practices and analysing daily data collected. The first focus of the solution would be to mitigate and eliminate obstacles when children try to socialize with others. This growing problem is developing into troubling ‘social norms’ which will be harmful for the future. So in response to recent reports and news, my device will be the first wearable and non-invasive device to help children with psychological pressure on a large scale in modern society.
There are different parts to the solution. First, on the information take-in, the device will be a cohesive combination of multiple detective functions including facial, vocal, and motional recognition. At the same time the device will adopt already existing technological achievements such as the stick-on stretchy patch created by Stanford University that measures cortisol levels which can indicate stress level and Chinese medical ‘electronic pulse-taking’ device. Currently there are many advanced devices used in the forensic field, but it’s time to enhance the advantages they bring in. As we develop further into the project, we can also use researches on social neuroscience, refining some of social processes we are trying to heal, from the biological perspective. On artificial intelligence and machine learning, we are creating a scoring system that can accurately interpret all the information the device collects to output a proper diagnosis.

There are two main ways for our device to solve pressing public health issues. First, as the device is wearable, non-invasive, and smart, it can help children report, precisely, their physiological and psychological difficulties to their teachers, parents, and other guardians. Imagine there is a little five year old kid sitting in a doctor's office and being asked about his/her symptoms. There could easily be a misunderstanding between the young patient and doctor. With consent from the parents, doctors will have access to all the data collected by our device and can see if there is repetitive symptoms and behaviors associated with those under extreme stress. The device will be even more helpful when dealing with special psychological conditions. Life for an angry and lost elementary kid who’s misunderstood in daily life, will change for the better, and stop a behavior pattern that could take permanent form in his/her mind. Our system will observe potential physical diseases and at the same time analyze, detect emotional pathology as an intervention ‘first step’ before the stress leads to unbreakable behavior patterns--which will then greatly raise insurance rates and medical costs and lead to personal tragedies. Our system will also reduce hospitalized patients, and more importantly will continuously and substantially benefit public health as a whole.
Our device will give access to those who may not have before. For those struggling with poverty or living in remote areas, a wearable device can supervise their health condition and can give necessary instruction.

Our solution is at the conceptual stage, fully drawn out with a paper written. There is a long way to go, but we are on the right path. We are planning to have a prototype in five years. I will offer this to the university I attend as a research and ideation project in collaboration with the university.
The project is a new integration of different science fields which improves human intelligence and emotions and health conditions with the aid of artificial intelligence. The ultimate goal of building a healthy city is not only to create an environmentally sustainable living space, but also to create long run potential for science development including creation of better artificial intelligence. Securing people’s health condition, we hope our city populations can focus on their careers and ambitions without worries from physical health concerns and debilitating stress. Dealing with hyper-change and hyper-pressure, people can’t devote themselves fully to their life pursuit. I want to build a city, or even a world, where everyone has a sense of belonging and has someone beside them who has their back; soon, if not now, artificial intelligence and humans will work side by side as comrades, not on a war front, but on the front of innovation and well-being. With help from AI, humans will eventually invent even better AIs and climb the next apex, and drive the cycle of innovation.
Time and a team, social neuroscientists, Professor Cynthia Breazeal and her Leonardo, Neural lace, Philo from Case Western University, Erica from Osaka University and Brown University’s Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative--how can I weave together all of these revolutionary movements so that a sentient life form appears-- my system I hope will be the brain and emotional source of this sentience.
Integrative to all of the current emotional intelligent robotics --that is how I will overcome the barriers! My system will be rejection free, and become integral to the new life forms.
