Amadou Leather™: Circular, Carbon-Neutral and Vegan
Consumer goods companies are faced with the challenge to immediately shift towards a low-carbon, more inclusive business model due to inequalities and climate change. Major barriers in tackling this challenge include reliance on raw materials that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and wasteful production methods built off of linear systems.
One of the top materials used in consumer goods is leather and synthetic leathers (Polyurethane). Both materials contribute to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, water contamination, and life threatening working conditions.
In order to meet the 5% increase in demand for leather goods by 2025 and UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, I propose Amadou, a biomaterial grown from mushrooms—carbon-neutral, biodegradable and without compromise to aesthetic and technical performance—as an alternative to leather.
By 2025, Amadou aims to take 1% of Leather and Synthetic Leathers USD ∼140 BN market size to reverberate positive environmental and social impacts at scale.
Over the last decades there has been unprecedented growth in demand for raw materials globally. This is driven by rapid industrialization of emerging economies and continued high levels of material consumption in developed countries.
And for apparel businesses, roughly 75% of its environmental impact is coming from raw material production and processing. Therefore, over the past decade, the need for sustainable materials—ultimately circular materials—has grown exponentially with the market size at USD 58.3 billion in 2018 and is expected to surpass a CAGR of 11.4% by 2023.
Within the consumer goods sector, the target segments Amadou Leather is serving is clothing, accessories, footwear, packaging, home goods and automotive.
Amadou Leather will be working and providing solutions for these industries by supplying them an alternative material to leather and synthetic leather in order to support their targets within the UN Sustainable Development Goals and ultimately improving their environmental and social impacts.
For instance, apparel and accessories business have estimated that roughly 75% of their environmental impact is coming from raw material production and processing. Therefore, over the past decade, the need for sustainable materials—ultimately circular materials—has grown exponentially globally with the market size at USD 58.3 billion in 2018 and is expected to surpass a CAGR of 11.4% by 2023. Amadou Leather is a solution to supply this demand.
Amadou Leather™ is an award winning vegan leather solution for the fashion, furniture, automotive and transportation industries looking to incorporate low-impact materials, circular economy principles, and closed-looped systems into their supply chain.
Amadou Leather™ feels like suede to touch with a natural rich brown color and a malleable surface that is lightweight and flexible. The material absorbs moisture when worn against the skin and insulates heat, yet remains breathable and cooling. The material is naturally antimicrobial as it stops the proliferation of bacteria.
The mushroom material is grown on recycled sawdust and uses existing edible mushroom cultivation techniques. Products produced from this material are completely biodegradable at the end of their lifecycle, and turns soil into rich soil.
1) The business highlights clean growth, low-carbon and circular economy, and brings innovative solutions to the fashion industry.
2) The durability has been tested to European and International standards. We are compliant with strict internal quality tests to ensure the traceability of the whole supply chain and the compliance of the UE chemicals REACH regulation and of the ECHA list of candidate SVHC substances.
3) The research and development conducted on Amadou Leather™, has increased tensile strength from a ‘light use’ to ‘medium use’ and the first pair of Amadou Leather™ indoor/outdoor slippers were made to confirm commercialization opportunities.
