GIVO - Garbage In, Value Out
The problem is PET waste recovery. 15 billion PET units are consumed annually. Less than 30% is collected; less than 10% is recycled.
GIVO solves this by:
- Sorting PET at the point of collection. Thus guarantee quality and maximize PET value.
- Using IoT & our WeightCapture software to manage the PET recovery value chain
- Job creation by empowering the Youth & Women with our GIVO solution
- We reduces transportation weight/costs for our partner off-takers and aids logistics planning.
If Scaled, assuming 100,000 units
- Scaling will mean that we can ensure 1.2 billion kg of PET avoids oceans and landfills. SDG 9,11,13,14,15
- Each GIVO unit is responsible for creating 2 direct job opportunities, and 4 indirect jobs in the waste thus potentially creating 600,000 jobs. SDG 5&8.
- Each Franchisee is can earn at least $3000 annually, which provides decent economic conditions for them. SDG 5
The primary problem we are trying to solve is PET recovery within the waste value chain. A break down of the problems include:
- In NIgeria, we consume 15 billion units of PET annually without any discernible way to dispose of it
- Social habit of not sorting waste at point disposal i.e it is normal in Nigeria to include recyclables, organic and material waste together in the same trash bag.
- Not sorting waste at point of disposal also leads to loss of value for recyclable materials, thus loss in potential revenue for aggregators
- Unorganized and Inefficient waste management structures makes it expensive for stakeholders engaged in waste collection
- No reliable data on PET consumption & recycling which leads to lack of planning and transparency from stakeholders
- Lack of suitable job opportunities for women and youth within the waste management space
Scavengers: These stakeholders are responsible for 70% of waste collection in Nigeria, yet are still informal players in the market. We will provide convenience and ease for them to deposit their PET. Furthermore, through our partnership with Paga, we provide financial inclusion.
GIVO Franchisees and Employees – Our solution provides entrepreneurship/ employment opportunities. With earnings from $3000 annually as a franchisees and job opportunities arising from the activities we spur, the community will be economically empowered.
Aggregators & Off takers – We enable them expand and optimize their operations. By sorting and shredding PET at source, we reduce the product bulk by 75% thereby saving cost for Off-takers. We also provide them with realtime data on PET quantities available at each location for logistics optimization.
Eco-Friendly Individuals/ Organization: With increased activism and social consciousness, more people are more aware of a need to get involved in fixing the PET waste problem. GIVO gives them a convenient way for them to participate in PET recovery in both online and offline mediums.
The Public: By facilitating the recovery PET, we ensure that the community environment - land and waterways is free from PET pollution
Our product, GIVO (Garbage In, Value Out) is an IoT, app and web based solution which automates and digitizes the PET recovery process. A GIVO set consists of Hardware (scale, android, printer, shredder and solar power solution - all IoT) and software (weightcapture.com).
How does it work ?
- Each GIVO set/ terminal is operated by a franchisee in a fixed location.
- Customers/ Scavengers in the area bring their raw PET to the franchisee or request for it to be picked up by closest franchisee
- The franchisee registers/identifies the customer (using the android) weights the product (using the Iot scale).
- Once the value of the product (currently at N25 per kg for raw PET) is confirmed a receipt of the transaction is printed (IoT printer) and a payment is automatically done to the customers account (via Paga, our digital payment partner)
- At the close of business, the franchisee gathers all the PET he has collected and sorts them according to type before feeding it into the (IoT) shredder to create a new product 'shredded PET' which has a value of N120 per kg.
- Once the shredded PET collected reaches a threshold (say 100kg), a pick up request is automatically sent to our partner off-taker/aggregator, detailing the quantity, value and location of the shredded PET
- When the aggregator picks the product and verifies the value (using an IoT scale & android device), he then pays GIVO N120 per kg which is shared 25:75 between the GIVO platform and the GIVO franchisee.
- Every detail of this transaction is fully digitized and accessed via a dedicated back end.

Thoery of Change for GIVO
Inputs
We support continuous advocacy on PET waste nationwide, undergo in offline/online marketing highlighting the environmental damage & recyclable value of PET and provide centers (GIVO Terminals) where customers can conveniently deposit their PET in exchange for cash or points
Outputs
Customers and the general public gain awareness of the negative environmental impact wrongful disposal of PET can have. They also see that they can contribute towards reducing PET waste by depositing it with a GIVO Franchisee, and get rewarded while doing so.
Short Term Outcomes
The public demonstrates an understanding and is also motivated by the financial reward. They request for PET to be picked up from GIVO operators, or deposit the material themselves. This will lead to greater demand for GIVO operators, which will provide more jobs.
Long Term Outcomes
The public understands the importance of sorting waste at source, treating PET as a commodity to be deposited and not littering PET in the environment.

Currently Serving: Pilot Stage: 3 GIVO Sets. Serving 50,000 people
We are kicking off our Pilot in July in three locations within Lagos, Nigeria. This pilot will last for 2 months where we expect to collect 10,000kg of PET. This will create direct employment for 6 people and indirect employment for 12 people
Year One: 100 Sets, Serving 1million people
After the pilot and within the next year, we aim to deploy 100 units of our solution to selected local governments in Lagos with the aim of collecting at least 1.2m kg of PET annually. This will create direct employment for 200 people and indirect employment for 400 people
Year Five: 10,00 Sets, Serving 100 million people
Within the next 5 years, we expect our solution to have covered Lagos state and be in operation in other states within Nigeria, responsible for collecting 120m kg of PET annually. This will create direct employment for 20,000 people and indirect employment for 40,000 people.
Our goals over the next five years include
- Becoming the largest collector of PET in Nigeria. In achieving this, we will be responsible for moving billions of PET from the communities.
- Increasing the participation of Youth and Women in the Waste Management Space through our franchisee program.
- To be the biggest supporter of the PET advocacy community which propagates the eco-friendly message in offline and online channels. We aim to consistently support campaigns and organizations that encourage PET recycling.
- To create a community of eco-friendly people and organizations. To foster and embed the recycling and sustainable living message.
- To create 20,000 direct jobs, at least half of those women and 40,000 indirect jobs. We will ensure at least half our Franchisees are women.
The following are barriers we expect to face next year and over the next five years as we scale:
Market barriers: Entering new markets and communities presents unique challenges in terms of regulation, customer tastes, behavior among others.
Cultural barriers: People behavior towards GIVO and its messaging will determine to a large extent the success of our solution.
Financial barriers: Start up costs and running costs will be needed to sustain and expand the operations. The lack of funds can hamper our goals and effort.
Market Barriers: Working closely with private organizations already in the waste recycling space, government agencies and advocacy groups will enable us navigate this barrier smoothly over the next 5 years
Cultural barrier: Working closely with advocacy groups, NGO's and enabling our eco-community will overtime reduce cultural barriers to our solution
Financial barrier: By sourcing for grants, equity and debt capital, we are working towards ensuring that we have the right resources at the right time.

At GIVO, we are about to undertake a pilot project that will cost the company $45,000. This pilot is taking place in Lagos, for two months. It involves three GIVO centres, two of them placed in low/mid income communities.
The GM prize on circular economy will help towards offsetting some of the pilot cost which we expect to act as a proof of our solution on the field. During the pilot, we hope to serve 50,000 people.
