CLIMATENZA Solar
World is moving away from fossil fuels. However, the variability in power and Energy requirements for Industrial application from renewable makes matching supply and demand a challenge. This challenge increases as more renewable enter the market. Ultimately the world will need 'dispatchable' renewable in the energy mix.
CLIMATENZA has innovated Solar concentrator with Fresnel design of and fixed focus on ground reflects solar radiation on the receiver. It is integrated with storage that is made of solid material which can be heated to 800 Degree Centigrade. No moving part, scaleable, long-lasting and recyclable.
With the usage of air as Heat transfer fluid our technology is well suited for other CSP applications apart from Power generation including Enhanced Oil Recovery, High temperature process heat, Hybridization with other thermal plants meaning making it more environmentally sustainable and a major push for Dispatchable renewable future.
Increasingly, near-100% of intermittent renewable scenarios are proposed as viable power system solutions. CLIMATENZA has investigated the effect of such scenarios on the security of power supply and energy requirements for Industrial applications and found that 100% intermittent renewable power systems could be unable to meet basic peak demand and ancillary services requirements, with the current technologies. Fluctuating solar and wind power requires lots of energy storage and lithium-ion battery seem to be the obvious choice- but they are far too expensive to play a major role.
In the Industrial sector, where continuous energy requirements are required for 24 hours of operation, it becomes impossible to use Solar energy as a source. Currently, according to IRENA, 54% of energy requirements are for the Industrial sector. Of this, 75% of energy requirement is heat requirements that are met 90% by burning of fossil fuels. In order to integrate renewable sources for the Industrial applications, clearly, low-cost solar Storage technology is required.
Concentrated Solar thermal market is assumed to be $44 Billion Industry by 2022 by International Energy Agency. CLIMATENZA is currently active in Indian and Chilean Geography. Our targeted customer segment is Industrial sector for heat requirements up to 600 Degree Centigrade. This includes multiple Industries including Food Processing Industry, Dairy Industry, Chemical and Pharma companies and Oil & Gas companies.
Oil & Gas companies possess a major challenge as current methods for extraction of Oil means burning of Gas to convert to steam in Enhanced Oil recover methods. CLIMATENZA is in contact with 2 of Major Oil companies including PDO (Petroleum Development Oman) and Equinor (Norwegian Oil& Gas company with presence in 34 countries). The value proposition we can bring for Oil companies is that instead of burning Gas we can generate steam by heating Air (as our heat transfer fluid) to reach the Temperature and Pressure requirements of EOR application. Advantage of that would be substantial reduction in LCOH (Levilized cost of Heat) from $90/MWh to $15/MWh in the MENA region.
With multiple applications apart from process heat and EOR, Desalination, thermal cooling and ultimately Dispatchable Power generation is our target market segment in next 5 years.
CLIMATENZA has designed the Fresnel design of Solar concentrator with fixed focus on ground that reflects solar radiation on the receiver. Non-imaging design of concentrator surface enables less precise tracking and easy manufacturing with no need for expensive material.
Our concentrator is made from concentric rings of Aluminium mirrors. The mirrors are fixed to the steel structure in a manner to reflect the sun’s rays onto a focal point on the ground.
Solar Concentrator: MK-06 and MK-10
Heat transfer Fluid used: Air
Collector Diameter: 6 meters and 10 meter
Two-axis tracking
Aluminum Mirrors
High Concentration Ratio, C: 2000
Focus Temperature, t= over 2000 Degree C
Heat transfer Fluid: Air
Operating temperature: Up to 800 Degree Centigrade
We are able to capture 90% of the energy hitting the mirror surface. The mirrors do not become heated, and hence no distortion. The mirrors are coated with a film for starch resistance and self-cleaning. Dust it the major issue in Desert regions and hence, the self-cleaning mechanism solves the water problem in the region. Apart from this, we can enclose the plant within the glass structure, if required. MK-10 needs 6m high structure.
Our receiver is made of special ceramic elements which can operate at very high temperature. Air which flows through these elements is heated to 800 Degree Centigrade and sent to storage or steam generation unit. The core of our Concentrated Solar thermal solution is thermal storage. Storage is made of solid material which can be heated to 800 Degree Centigrade. No moving parts, scalable, long-lasting and recyclable. Because of high operating temperatures, it is possible to reach high energy density of the storage material. The thermal storage is made from refractory material. This has been used in glass manufacturing and foundries for over 100 years. Our IP resides on how the bricks are layered within the chamber. The result is thermal storage which is long lasting, Maintenance free and Cost-effective.
