According to the human rights group Anti-Slavery International, modern slavery and climate change are inextricably linked in a vicious circle. While climate change affects all of us in some ways, its effects are felt immediately by the planet's most vulnerable communities. Stated differently, climate change may be global, but its effects are highly localized.
These communities often reside in countries that lack the financial wherewithal to tackle climate change. Their livelihoods often depend on industries such as fossil fuel extraction, cobalt extraction, and landfills, which further exacerbate the effects of climate change. According to the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR), climate migration will continue to rise especially as more and more coastal communities get impacted by rising sea levels and scarcity of water.
When people are forced to migrate, they expose themselves to grave dangers, including the risk of human trafficking, forced labor, and dangerous travel through inhuman conditions, including heat, deserts, ravines, and forests - often with children on their backs.
When these victims migrate to a foreign country, they are vulnerable to exploitation by business organizations, not to mention the hostility faced in foreign nations as is evident in national policy discourses in America and Europe.
According to 2018 World Bank estimates, climate-induced migration will force 143 million people to migrate by 2050. The UN acknowledged this challenge in the Cancun Adaptation Framework in 2010. Traditionally, climate fight - the fight against climate change - has taken precedence over climate flight, i.e., addressing climate-induced migration. It's time for global cooperation to shift this focus.
CirFin is a global online platform that aims to directly address the root cause of climate-induced modern slavery. How can we reduce, if not eliminate, climate flight? How can we empower the most vulnerable communities to adapt to climate change? What changes can they make in their farming, retailing, or recycling practices? Globally, what can be done to incentivize these communities to develop resilience and survive the climate crisis with dignity, instead of being forced to migrate?
CirFin is a global nonprofit (501(c)3) initiative that aims to inspire and mobilize youth globally to facilitate a transition from a linear economy to a circular economy within their respective communities. CirFin is an online platform providing a wide array of digital resources to young circular economists, including but not limited to:
CirFin Times newsletter:
- CirFin Times is an informative series related to climate change, including, but not limited to, circular economy, linear economy, fossil fuels, plastic pollution, urban growth, and population growth. It highlights how climate change is inextricably linked to several causes that result in human migration and how a circular economy can span all industries, including retail, energy, agriculture, and tourism.
Earth Day Everyday podcast series:
- The goal of the Earth Day Everyday podcast is to facilitate conversations about incentivizing a more sustainable world through global guest speakers, experts, and informational videos. Through these conversations, we hope to provide insights to global youth to spark their own local conversations about adapting to climate change and developing climate resiliency.
Online workshops:
- Our three-part online course series aims to highlight how transitioning to a circular economy helps us get closer to achieving a sustainable world. However, this transition requires incentives backed by fintech innovations such as blockchain and eco-points. These innovations can ensure communities worldwide are fairly rewarded for their contributions to fighting climate change (such as manual separation of materials at recycling plants) and secure their future (and thus, prevent climate-induced migration for better economic opportunities)
In-person events:
- Our physical workshops are held in local libraries, where we educate students on climate challenges due to resource consumption, the linear economy's harmful effects, and the benefits of transitioning to the circular economy.
Published book:
- Designing on the Brink: Products for a Climate in Crisis, our book highlights how commonly used products we use on a daily basis are premised on single-use conventional product designs. We then illustrate how the intersection of circular design and recent innovation in fintech can facilitate this transition -- and, in the process, help us heal our planet. And through this transition, create new economic opportunities for communities facing climate change devastation, thereby reducing the need for migration.
CirFin Create:
- An open online challenge inviting global youth across the world to submit ideas about sustainability. With financial prizes (based on funds raised through CirFin recognition), we aim to create a global effort to safeguard our planet and shape a greener, more sustainable future thereby reducing the need for climate-induced migration.
CirFin AI assistant:
- Our AI assistant leverages advanced AI to offer conversational insights and support for creating sustainable financial strategies. It is built on top of CirFin.org content and aligns with CirFin's mission to educate and empower youth in building a greener future.
The CirFin platform is continuously expanding the online platform with several future additions including the launch of CirFin innovations - a series of apps developed by the CirFin team to fight climate change and reduce climate-induced human flight.
At CirFin, we are committed to the responsible use of technology. This means that our platform, by its very nature, does not collect or store any private information.
We use AI for CirFin AI Assistant, where our content is organically created and fed to the AI model. We ensure this content is curated, distilled, not biased, and does not unfairly treat any community.
All our podcasts and interviews for Earth Day Everyday podcast are done after receiving consent from the participants.
We highlight the use of blockchain instead of centralized stores, which are more susceptible to compromise than a decentralized ledger, precisely for privacy reasons.
CirFin's platform, including its objective and mission, is rooted in a deep respect for human rights. Our premise is that no one should be forced to migrate, especially due to the decisions and lifestyles of others.
The concept of "distributing" the harmful effects of climate change unevenly to facilitate a consumption-driven economy is flawed and unfair. Thus, by incorporating responsible use of fintech innovation, CirFin facilitates a transition towards a more responsible, climate friendly, circular economy.
CirFin aims to mobilize global youth worldwide and create an international community of change-makers - circular economy change agents. CirFin’s online resources aim to equip these change-makers with the knowledge necessary to make their communities resilient to climate change. If these communities are able to adapt to climate change, it will directly impact reducing climate-induced migration.
CirFin highlights how current linear economy practices cause grave damage to the communities ultimately forcing them to migrate. For example, years of aggressive “jhum” farming practices in the northeastern region of India resulted in the rapid deforestation of the wettest land on earth, causing the community to migrate and look for alternative sources of income. Likewise, plastic pollution in the oceans ultimately kills marine life, decimating the livelihood of coastal communities.
According to the December 2023 IMF report, climate change induces more people to migrate and leave their home countries behind - thus making them susceptible to modern slavery.
CirFin aims to address this by enabling a global community of youth change makers who can challenge the status quo. The current global youth, who are already aware of climate change, are now being called upon to take on a more active role. There is a general lack of awareness of the role that resource consumption and linear economy plays in climate change. At this junction, producing goods fast and furious is considered to be the bedrock of the industrial economy.
CirFin informs global youth about the importance of understanding the circular economy. This knowledge is crucial, and CirFin puts the concept of using incentives to facilitate this transition at the front and center of the movement. By being informed and knowledgeable, the global youth can play a significant role in this transition.
By making the global youth aware of replacing mono-cropping with inter-cropping, replacing single-use plastics with alternatives like bamboo, extending the useful life of products - my jacket for your racket - we will eventually reduce the dependency on a linear economy model and in turn reduce the climate induced migration.
All aspects of the CirFin platform such as CirFin times, the podcast series, the book, the AI assistant and the online curriculum are operational.
The digital nature of the CirFin platform has significantly enhanced our ability to scale globally, opening up new opportunities and regions.
We have built a robust network of believers who are spreading the word behind CirFin.
Furthermore, we continuously build partnerships with like-minded organizations to generate awareness for CirFin.
With every interaction we have, be it through podcast series or through events we participate in, we are constantly looking for ways to increase the impact and reach for CirFin.
Our team is not only well-versed technically but also dedicated to the growth, scalability, and continuous improvement of the CirFin platform.

We have developed and launched the CirFin platform. It has been operational for more than two years.
The platform's unique features, such as the CirFin Times, the podcast series, the book, the AI assistant, and the online curriculum, have been continuously evolving to cater to our audience - global youth changemakers.
All aspects of the CirFin platform, such as CirFin Times, the podcast series, the book, the AI assistant, and the online curriculum, are operational.
CirFin has received tremendous feedback and recognition from Ashoka Changemaker, Prudential Emerging Visionaries, and more than 25 media and press articles.
But even more gratifying has been the organic feedback our readers and participants have given to our book and podcast.
So far, CirFin has impacted more than 5,000 students worldwide, in 35+ countries on all five major continents.
CirFin is now a mature platform, fully equipped and ready for scaling to spark a global changemaker in every corner of the world.
MIT Solve will allow us to collaborate with an innovative community of social entrepreneurs and experts who can provide crucial mentorship and guidance as we enter the next phase of CirFin's growth trajectory.
As we plan the next phase of CirFin's growth and execute our platform's roadmap, the guidance and expertise from the Solve community will be invaluable. Your input via the virtual check-in meetings will be integral in refining our roadmap and identifying new areas of innovation and development for our platform.
While the CirFin platform and its resources are fully operational, it would be vital for us to generate increased global awareness of it. It would be great to have experts, especially via professional executive leadership coaching, with whom we can confer to further CirFin's global reach and awareness. We hope to leverage this expertise to get feedback on developing a system with measurable objectives and associated results to track the platform's progress.
We tend to learn most from our peers and through networking. And the monthly cohort convening would be an excellent avenue for me to achieve this objective. By joining the Solve community and other participants passionate about addressing the global challenge of modern slavery, I hope to expand my knowledge, spheres of influence, and collaboration. This will have a networked effect on CirFin and further amplify the impact we can make on the global youth community.
We hope to have CirFin scale its growth further through Solve's global network and available resources. We also hope to connect with new international experts, especially for our podcast series - be it in government, executives of companies making circular products, or executives of established companies making changes to their existing products. Having Solve's guidance will give CirFin unprecedented support as we reach out to these individuals for our podcasts.
The more global youth change-makers we enable in local communities across the globe, the more resilient these communities will become to adapt to climate change and thus directly reduce climate-induced migration - a leading drive of modern slavery.
Our goal for joining forces with the Solve community extends beyond funding. We seek to learn, network, forge partnerships, and, most importantly, enable global youth change-makers. Together, we can expand the impact we have already made in our individual capacities and empower the next generation of change-makers.
- Financial (e.g. accounting practices, pitching to investors)

Targets Gen Z:
Current platforms that address climate change do not specifically target youth. According toWhat's The Big Data, 30% of the global population is Gen Z. CirFin aims to connect directly with the Gen Z population and make them change agents within their local communities.
CirFin spans multiple industries:
Climate change is a complex and multifaceted problem, and CirFin's platform is designed to address this comprehensively. Our online platform spans multiple industries, catering to the specific needs of each sector. We don't just highlight the harmful practices but also provide insights into alternatives and solutions, ensuring that our audience is well-informed and engaged in the fight against climate change.
Emphasis on economic incentives and ideas to achieve that:
To ensure the durability of any transition our changemakers might undertake within their local community, CirFin inculcates the concept of economic incentives. Lack of financial incentives and prosperity make it harder for communities to drop their current practices, however harmful they might be for the future (often culminating in climate-induced migration). CirFin encourages change makers to appreciate the importance of economic incentives to facilitate the transition to a climate-friendly circular economy. This makes us unique compared to other platforms that discuss climate change, circular economy, or fintech, but not all in one unified platform.
Unified online-physical-social platform:
CirFin's platform aims to combine the power of digital media, physical media, and social media to ensure its platform's continuous awareness and global reach. It directly highlights the harmful effects of a consumption-driven linear economy and how it is one of the primary underlying causes of climate-induced human migration (which directly results in modern slavery).
When 30% of the human population becomes empowered with this knowledge, we will see a seismic shift in the fight against climate change and a dramatic reduction in climate change-induced migration.
Our theory of change aims to reduce and eventually eliminate modern slavery stemming from climate-change induced migration. The primary root cause of climate-change is the resource consumption driven linear economy model, which demands immediate attention.
Resource consumption has profound environmental consequences and can be directly linked to modern slavery. The aggressive demand for goods leads to an even more aggressive exploitation of raw materials (minerals, metals, and fossil fuels), which in turn leads to the depletion of natural resources, the destruction of habitats, the degradation of forests, an increase in carbon emissions, and a loss of biodiversity. As our consumption increases, so does the amount of waste we generate.
When we use landfills, we are kicking the can down the road, and passing the waste problem on to future generations of these communities. The emissions produced by the landfills and the incinerators lead to further greenhouse gas effects. Because there are not enough landfills on the earth to handle our trash, we dump it in the ocean, which inflicts devastating damage to our marine biodiversity, causing the death of marine life and decimating the livelihoods of coastal communities.
On a planet with a limited or even a shrinking number of resources and an ever-increasing population, this resource crunch will become much more severe. This includes shortages of food, water, energy, housing, medical care, and transportation, among other things.
Consequently, these activities have the potential to trigger mass migrations as humans are forced to move away from barren, depleted regions that can no longer support them. And these mass, climate-induced human migrations often result in modern slavery.
Our strategy to combat this issue is to empower local youth globally within these communities. By equipping them with knowledge about the harmful effects of the linear economy and the benefits of the transition to a circular economy, we instill hope for a brighter, more sustainable future.
Once the global youth are empowered with this knowledge, they have the potential to become powerful change agents in their communities. They can lead the way in making their communities more climate change resilient, inspiring others to follow suit. They can facilitate adaptation to climate change by encouraging techniques such as circular farming, promoting alternatives to single-use plastic, pushing back on hazardous landfills, and mandating the use of blockchain to ensure fair incentives to those participating in the global supply chain from source to destination.
The more resilient these communities become to climate change, the more economically secure they become, it will lessen their need to leave their homelands, we will then see a reduction in climate-induced migration thereby directly reducing modern slavery.
Our impact goals are continuously refined to keep up with the growth of our platform. These include:
- Number of global youth/students impacted
- Number countries impacted
- Number of CirFin Times articles
- Number of Podcast interviews
- Number of submissions to our CirFin CREATE contest
- Number of countries from where the submissions originate for our CirFin CREATE contest
- Number of books (including editions to existing books) published
- Number of impressions our posts receive on social media
- Number of workshops conducted
- Number of apps that would be released as part of CirFin Innovate (a new section on the CirFin platform that will be released in Fall 2024)
- Number of local and global organizations we partner with
Ultimately, we aim to open the CirFin platform for the community to provide feedback and spotlight changemakers who made a specific difference within their community through the adoption of a circular economy practice backed by incentives. We hope to develop objectives and key results that can be shared with these change-makers to track the respective impacts of their efforts.

Therefore, by benefiting the global youth, we directly benefit their communities currently being forced to migrate due to climate-change-induced damages.
Our value proposition to this audience is immediate access to educational and interactive content. This equips users with the knowledge required to facilitate a transition to a circular economy backed with fintech incentives. This contribution directly impacts the empowerment of global youth and the resilience of their communities.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
CirFin is currently a non-profit corporation with an incredibly low cost footprint. We have had tremendous success without a substantial round of funding or investment.
To date, our funds have come from sources such as Prudential Financial, Ashoka Changemaker, participating in climate-related events, and revenue from our founder’s book sold on Amazon.
Looking ahead, CirFin is exploring various potential revenue sources. These include a nominal subscription model for some of our services, the delivery of organic content that we can license to other websites, partnerships with corporations to showcase their circular products and innovations, and seeking funding from local or federal government sources.
These are all options that we hope to explore in the very near future. These are also areas where we could benefit immensely from the feedback and advice of the Solve team.
