English is the most widely spoken language globally, serving as the primary medium of communication in international diplomacy, business, science, and education. Mastery of English opens doors to numerous employment opportunities and enhances access to education and healthcare. It also empowers individuals to access vast amounts of information and resources, allowing them to actively participate as global citizens.
Education, particularly English as a second language (ESL), plays a crucial role in improving the lives of survivors of trafficking and vulnerable populations. By providing education and ESL, we can help break the cycle of trafficking, offering a pathway to a better future. However, the prevalent method of ESL instruction—rote learning in large classroom settings—poses significant challenges.
Rote learning often leads to a superficial understanding of the language and discourages students from using it outside the classroom. While rote learners might become proficient sight-readers, they frequently struggle with comprehension, processing spoken language, and grasping nuances and colloquial expressions used in daily conversations. This method of instruction fails to engage students, does not foster critical or creative thinking, and ultimately does not lead to genuine fluency. Instruction in large settings also limits the amount of personalization and additional support for each student.
As a result, rote learning hampers learners' progress and diminishes the social and economic benefits that come with English language acquisition. To truly enhance fluency and provide meaningful support to survivors of trafficking, it is essential to adopt more interactive, engaging, and comprehensive teaching methods that promote deeper understanding and practical use of the English language.
Our solution is a digital, interactive, and leveled curriculum that is easily customizable to the cultural background of the learner population. Designed to be delivered by tutor/mentors who are native English speakers, it utilizes one-on-one instruction in a safe and supportive environment. This approach promotes student interaction, builds self-confidence, encourages curiosity, and gives students the space to self-reflect, develop their own opinions and ideas, and ask questions.
Our operating model efficiently pairs tutor/mentors with students from our global partner organizations. These pairs meet virtually on a regular schedule, progressing through the leveled curriculum at the students' own level and pace. The simple act of regular connection with a committed and caring adult role model boosts students' self-worth, supports social and emotional learning, and accelerates educational gains.
We leverage technology to facilitate an engaging learning experience and build meaningful relationships. Our innovative approach not only enhances language acquisition but also fosters a sense of community and personal growth.
Given the sensitive nature of our global partners' work and the critical need for security for survivors, I Am Global Academy adheres to stringent safety guidelines and protocols to protect the privacy and identity of our partners and students. We diligently monitor and record all meetings between tutors and students, ensuring a safe and supportive environment. Our volunteers are thoroughly trained in the best practices of Trauma-Informed Care to provide sensitive and appropriate support.
We leverage rapid authoring tools and AI to create content that is equitable, respectful, and supportive of all learners. All content is reviewed and finalized by our tutors and curriculum team. We ensure that all source material is original and aligned with current educational best practices, promoting empathy and respect throughout our curriculum. Our team stays apprised of the most pressing issues and opportunities related to the ethical use of AI in learning and development.
By integrating these measures, we strive to deliver a secure, high-quality educational experience that addresses the unique needs of our students and partners.
We serve students who are survivors of trafficking or other forms of social abuse, as well as those from vulnerable populations affected by poverty, lack of family support, or a history of abuse. Our current student population spans India, Nepal, Kenya, and South Africa.
In Mumbai, India, we partner with an organization providing holistic aftercare focused on education for young women of majority age, emphasizing higher education and vocational training. A student from Mumbai recently completed her studies to become a lawyer. She is now working in the High Court of India to help other survivors navigate the judicial system.
In Kolkata, India, our partners are involved in both aftercare and prevention programs, serving a diverse group of students varying in age, sex, and backgrounds. To date, we have served more young people in Kolkata than in any other region. Our students have found employment in healthcare, hospitality, and sales positions. Several young women have since married and had children, breaking the generational cycles of sex work and poverty.
In Kathmandu, Nepal, we collaborate with an aftercare facility for minor girls and an organization assisting survivors repatriated from cross-country trafficking. We are also expanding into surrounding village areas to support a school dedicated to prevention. Our students are regularly exploring opportunities for continuing education.
In Kenya, our partner cares for vulnerable orphaned and impoverished children. Several of our students have progressed to secondary school.
In South Africa, we work with an organization committed to building thriving communities by addressing basic needs, including early childhood education. We have launched a program to support local preschool teachers in improving their English fluency, giving their students a significant advantage when they enter primary school.
To date, I Am Global Academy has positively impacted the lives and futures of 167 students. Increasing fluency in English helps prevent exploitation or re-exploitation by developing essential skills that lead to better educational and employment opportunities. It empowers students to advocate for themselves and enhances their understanding of and access to vital services. By acquiring English language proficiency, students can unlock their futures and help break the cycle of human trafficking.
Ten years ago, a small group of volunteers from Cincinnati, Ohio went on a mission trip to India and wanted to continue to serve the communities they met while abroad. They asked the leaders of the organizations they visited about how they could meaningfully support their organization and beneficiaries. The response was simple: help them learn English. Ten years later, we continue to fulfill this request with a straightforward yet impactful solution.
We have dedicated time to building strong relationships not only with our students but also with the leaders and staff of our partner organizations who are deeply connected to the community. Our mission is to serve the needs of our partners, and each year it becomes increasingly evident that providing quality ESL instruction in a personal and relational manner can profoundly impact underserved populations worldwide.
What sets us apart is that we are entirely volunteer-run. Our leadership embodies true collaboration, with most team members having years of service with our organization. We bring a diverse range of experiences and skills, matched only by our passion. Our work and decisions are guided by the needs and feedback of the communities we serve, ensuring that our efforts are rooted in genuine understanding and responsiveness. We regularly visit our partner organizations and students abroad to deepen relationships, continue to learn with them, and show our continued commitment to their success.

- Growth
I Am Global Academy is in the growth stage. We have developed a successful and proven operational model that connects volunteer tutors/mentors with students from our six global partners. Our teams have seamlessly transitioned from working in a shared central location to operating 100% remotely. Currently, we run three 8 to 10-week sessions annually, where tutors meet virtually with their students for about 45 minutes each week.
Our curriculum comprises 30 levels of English lessons, each containing 8 lessons focused on reading, small talk practice, comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar instruction. To date, we have completed 33 sessions and tutored 167 students. Starting with our two foundational partners in India ten years ago, we have since expanded our reach to include partners in Nepal, Kenya, and South Africa.
This growth underscores our commitment to providing quality ESL instruction and highlights the scalability and effectiveness of our model.
If selected as a solution to the Challenge, it would significantly elevate our ability to scale and innovate. It would enable us to extend our services to more partners and enhance our overall impact on the lives of our students. While the financial resources are undeniably valuable, the true advantage lies in gaining access to the expertise and mentorship of the MIT Solve, HPE Foundation, and the Anti-Slavery Collective teams.
Being selected will aid our ability to rapidly develop and continually improve our curriculum. We could allocate resources to hire subject matter experts, better aligning our objectives and content as we expand to include more subject areas like STEM. Additionally, we would incorporate more independent student work on our LMS and encourage a rhythm of daily practice.
As we continue to grow as an organization, we recognize the importance of developing a sound business model and building our executive team and board. We are particularly enthusiastic about the opportunity to receive insights into marketing, executive leadership coaching, and the chance to connect with a global network of experts.
This support would be transformative, equipping us with the knowledge and connections necessary to propel our mission forward and amplify our reach. With the guidance and resources provided, we are confident in our ability to achieve our goal of delivering high-quality ESL education and making a profound impact on our students' lives.
Ultimately, being selected as a solution to the Challenge would not only provide us with essential financial support but also empower us with unparalleled expertise and mentorship. This would enable us to innovate, scale, and significantly increase our impact. We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with renowned organizations and are committed to leveraging this support to advance our mission and enhance the educational outcomes for our students.
- Business Model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)

Our solution tackles the problem of providing high-quality ESL education through an innovative combination of technology, personalized learning, and a strong relational focus. We create tailored learning experiences for each student. This approach not only enhances engagement but also ensures each learner receives the specific support they need to succeed.
We leverage volunteer tutors to deliver personalized tutoring, typically this is a costly service ($30-$50 per hour) that is out of reach for the communities we work with. By developing a curriculum that volunteer tutors can easily implement, we promote equitable access and deepen community engagement.
Our solution has already demonstrated its potential to catalyze broader positive impacts.
For example, our partner in Kenya was motivated by our technology driven approach to create a Virtual Girls' Leadership program, and another community member launched a nonprofit to support tuition for ongoing educational opportunities for our students.
Our solution has the potential to transform the market and landscape of ESL education by shifting from traditional, one-size-fits-all methods to personalized, technology-driven, and community-centered learning experiences. This shift can lead to a more efficient and effective education system that meets the diverse needs of learners.
To ensure seamless integration and effectiveness, our Operations Team is dedicated to making the connection process with our partners as effortless as possible. We adapt our solutions based on the capacity and needs of our partners, ensuring they can implement our programs with minimal lift. This partner-focused approach ensures that our curriculum and technology are accessible and easy to use, fostering successful collaborations and scalable impact.
Innovation and expansion are crucial for refining good ideas. We envision a world where access to education is both equitable and human-centered. Our commitment to continuous improvement and community engagement positions us to lead this transformation, making high-quality education accessible to all.

What sets us apart is that, to date, we are an entirely volunteer-run organization. Our board consists of six dedicated members, and our executive leadership team of four is supported by six additional team members who manage specific aspects of our program. We deliver our services with the help of a committed team of 50 part-time volunteers. Every member of our team contributes their time and expertise on a part-time, volunteer basis, demonstrating our collective dedication to our mission.
We started our program in 2014, we have 10 years of experience working on our solution.
At I Am Global Academy, we prioritize creating a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all team members. Our commitment is reflected in our liberatory design process, where we engage stakeholders from international partners, learners, teammates, tutors, and executives of aligned non-profits and boards to gather insights that shape our diversity and inclusion strategies.
One of our primary goals is to ensure that our leadership team and board reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Through our stakeholder engagement, we identified key areas for improvement in gender and racial diversity. While our current board composition emphasizes this, we recognize the need for further diversification, specifically in adding 2-3 new board members who identify as persons of color, male, and with nuanced skillsets needed in our organization's scaling. This diversification goal is steered by a dedicated board committee who are activating the leadership and networks of the whole board. Our goal is not just to include diverse members but to design for belonging, creating an environment where every individual feels valued and integrated into the team.
As Susie Wise articulates in "Design for Belonging," creating a sense of belonging is more about fostering feelings than implementing concrete designs. Recognizing this, we have implemented several practices to ensure that new members feel welcomed and included. When new members join our team or board, we prioritize getting to know each other through informal gatherings, which helps build personal connections and understanding.
To shape our belonging with deep intentionality, we have events, rituals, groups, and communications, wherein we celebrate the identities, values, and contributions of each team member. These rituals include seasonal team dinners, individualized hand-drawn art that captures a totem representing each teammate's unique gifts in a ritualized experience that honors and connects each teammate, and an olive wood wine opener connected to our team’s origin story - a touchstone that each teammate is gifted as a symbol of our collective journey and unity. Our approach is to deeply know and celebrate each team member - both as an individual and as part of the whole team. This holistic recognition fosters a sense of belonging and value among team members, ensuring that everyone feels included and appreciated.
Our journey towards becoming a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization is ongoing. We continuously seek feedback and insights from our stakeholders to inform our strategies and actions. Our commitment to diversity is not just about meeting quotas but about creating a vibrant, dynamic team that leverages the strengths and perspectives of its members to achieve our collective goals.
By focusing on inclusive design and fostering personal connections, we aim to create a work environment where everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging. Through these efforts, we strive to not only meet but exceed our diversity and inclusion goals, ultimately enhancing our organization’s impact and effectiveness.
I Am Global Academy is a B2B2C nonprofit organization. We work with partner organizations (aftercare, orphan care, and early childhood programs serving individuals impacted by human trafficking, poverty, and other forms of abuse) to provide online tutoring services to their beneficiaries. Currently, funding support from donations allows us to provide free access to our online learning platform, curriculum, and tutors.
We are considering tiered pricing for service options or direct sponsorship opportunities and welcome input on how to improve our business model.
- Individual consumers or stakeholders (B2C)
I Am Global Academy is currently financed by generous donations from individuals and small groups. Our low budget requirements, driven by our volunteer-run model, have allowed us to maintain a track record of fiscal responsibility. However, as we aim for future growth and greater impact, we recognize the need to transition to a paid team and hire contractors who can help us advance our goals.
To achieve this, we have set an ambitious fundraising goal for the year. This will enable us to cover our current costs, compensate our CEO and Chief Development Officer (CDO), and hire contractors, starting in 2025. Our fundraising strategy includes:
Increasing Individual Monthly Donors: We aim to expand our base of regular supporters, providing a steady stream of income.
Connecting with Major Donors: We will reach out to potential major donors who share our vision and can make significant contributions.
Researching Grant Opportunities: We will identify and apply for grants that align with our mission and goals.
Applying to Funding Competitions: We will participate in funding competitions to secure additional resources and gain exposure.
This comprehensive approach will support our transition to a more sustainable financial model, allowing us to scale our operations and enhance our impact in the communities we serve.
