NICO is a community program offering holistic resources to vulnerable children and their families in Honduras.
NICO, a program within Asociación Manos Extendidas (AME), addresses a broader set of challenges beyond educational support, incorporating social, economic, emotional, and spiritual elements into its approach to child development. This comprehensive focus reflects a deep understanding of the systemic issues facing children in Honduras, aiming to create a more supportive and nurturing environment for their growth.
Context and Problem Statement
In many regions of Honduras, children face complex obstacles that hinder their potential, from poverty and family instability to a lack of community resources and spiritual guidance. NICO is designed to bridge educational gaps and address the underlying needs of children and their families through a holistic approach that encompasses spiritual care.
Breaking the Cycle of Poverty
A significant problem that NICO seeks to address is the cycle of poverty, which often limits educational opportunities and contributes to social disparities. Children from low-income families may need more access to quality education, leading to lower academic achievement and fewer prospects. NICO's educational support, which includes tutoring, mentoring, and resource provision, aims to break this cycle and foster academic success.
Addressing Family Instability
Family instability is another critical issue that NICO confronts. Economic pressures, migration, and other factors can lead to unstable family environments, adversely affecting children's emotional and social development. NICO stabilizes families by offering support, engaging with parents, and connecting them with community resources. This approach helps create a more secure foundation for children to thrive.
Enhancing Community Engagement
NICO also addresses the problem of limited community engagement in children's education and well-being. NICO builds a network of support around each child by fostering partnerships with local stakeholders, engaging community leaders, and creating programs that encourage involvement. This collaborative approach reinforces the importance of community in a child's development.
Promoting Emotional and Social Development
Beyond educational support, NICO recognizes the importance of fostering emotional and social development in children. Many children who experience instability may struggle with emotional regulation and social skills. NICO provides activities and support that promote emotional well-being, encourage positive peer relationships, and provide a safe space for children to express themselves.
Nurturing Spiritual Growth
A unique aspect of NICO is its focus on spiritual growth, recognizing that a solid spiritual foundation can positively impact a child's sense of identity and purpose. Through spiritual guidance, faith-based activities, and community engagement, NICO helps children cultivate a sense of belonging and moral grounding, essential for navigating life's challenges.
Conclusion
In summary, NICO seeks to solve complex problems that encompass educational disparities, family instability, community disengagement, and emotional and spiritual development challenges. By addressing these interconnected issues, NICO contributes to creating a more holistic and supportive environment for children in Honduras, fostering their growth and enabling them to reach their full potential.
NICO is a comprehensive program within Asociación Manos Extendidas (AME) designed to support children in Honduras, focusing on their educational, social, emotional, and spiritual development. The program aims to create a nurturing environment that encourages children to thrive, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances.
What is NICO?
NICO stands for "Niños en Comunidad" or "Children in the Community." The program is rooted in the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. NICO provides daily after-school educational support and addresses broader challenges that children in Honduras face, such as poverty, family instability, and lack of community resources. The program's goal is to empower children by offering a holistic approach that extends beyond academics.
How Does NICO Work?
NICO operates a daily after-school program for children 4-15 through a network of dedicated professionals, including educators, social workers, and spiritual guides, who work together to create a supportive environment for children. Here's how the program functions:
Educational Support
One of NICO's primary focuses is to bridge the educational gap for children ages 4-15. The program offers tutoring and mentoring services to help children succeed in their studies. These services are tailored to meet individual needs, whether it's homework help, subject-specific tutoring, or general academic guidance. NICO also provides learning materials and resources to ensure that children have everything they need to succeed.
Family Engagement
NICO recognizes the importance of family in a child's development. The program engages with families to offer support and guidance, addressing issues like family instability and providing resources to create a stable environment. This involvement helps strengthen the bond between children and their families, contributing to a more positive atmosphere at home.
Community Integration
NICO fosters strong community connections by partnering with local stakeholders and encouraging community involvement in children's education and well-being. This approach creates a network of support around each child, enhancing their sense of belonging and providing additional resources for their growth.
Emotional and Social Development
NICO goes beyond education to promote emotional and social development. The program offers activities that encourage positive peer relationships, build self-esteem, and help children develop important life skills. These activities are designed to be fun and engaging, providing a safe space for children to express themselves and form lasting connections.
Spiritual Growth
Spirituality is an essential component of NICO's approach. The program offers spiritual guidance and faith-based activities to help children develop a sense of purpose and moral grounding. This spiritual focus provides children with a foundation to navigate life's challenges with resilience and hope.
Conclusion
NICO is more than just an educational support program; it's a holistic initiative that aims to create a positive and supportive environment for children in Honduras. By focusing on education, family, community, emotional development, and spirituality, NICO seeks to empower children to reach their full potential and become well-rounded individuals.

Asociación Manos Extendidas (AME) is looking to provide evidence-based educational programs, and we recognize the critical importance of the NICO initiative. We are excited to strengthen the evidence base of NICO to ensure that it is effective but also scalable and sustainable over time. Our enthusiasm stems from the many benefits that this will bring, which we outline below and which are central to our strategic planning and application to the MIT LEAP Challenge:
Justification for Strengthening the Evidence Base
1. Demonstrating Impact: Our goal with NICO is to improve learning outcomes for children aged 4-15, and we are thrilled about the opportunity to provide concrete proof of its effectiveness. By collecting and analyzing data on educational success, family stability, and community engagement, we can demonstrate that NICO has a positive impact, which will help us gain the trust of stakeholders, donors, and partners.
2. Enhancing Program Design: We are committed to refining the program design of NICO, and having a solid evidence base will enable us to do this more effectively. By analyzing outcomes and identifying areas for improvement, we can ensure that the program continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of the children and families it serves. This iterative process is exciting, as NICO will continue to improve and have a more significant impact.
3. Facilitating Collaboration and Partnerships: We believe collaboration is essential for achieving our goals, and strengthening the evidence base of NICO will make it easier for us to partner with other organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies. By clearly documenting the impact of NICO, we become a more attractive partner for collaborative projects and funding opportunities. This will help us mobilize resources and extend our reach.
4. Ensuring Sustainability: We are committed to the long-term success of NICO, and having a solid evidence base is crucial for securing sustained funding and support. By demonstrating that NICO produces measurable and significant outcomes, we can attract donor support and justify continued investment in the program. This is essential for the sustainability and future growth of NICO.
5. Contributing to the Field: We are excited to share our research findings and lessons learned with the broader child protection and education field. By contributing to the knowledge base, we can advance knowledge and inform other organizations working in similar contexts. This aligns perfectly with the goals of the MIT LEAP Challenge, which values collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, AME is passionate about strengthening the evidence base of NICO to demonstrate impact, improve program design, foster collaborations, ensure sustainability, and contribute to the broader child protection and education field. We are excited about the positive effects that NICO will continue to have on the lives of children and families, and we are committed to making a lasting difference in the communities we serve.

- Formative research (e.g. usability studies; feasibility studies; case studies; user interviews; implementation studies; process evaluations; pre-post or multi-measure research; correlational studies)
- Summative research (e.g. impact evaluations; correlational studies; quasi-experimental studies; randomized control studies)
The 12-week LEAP Project Sprint is a significant undertaking for us as we aim to explore the impact and effectiveness of the NICO program comprehensively.
The research methodology we have chosen comprises formative and summative research to provide a broad range of insights into the program. Our objective is to refine program design and improve user experiences.
Our formative research component seeks to understand NICO's process and implementation aspects, which will form the foundation for refining program design and improving user experiences. To achieve this objective, we could conduct usability and feasibility studies to identify potential areas for improvement, case studies, user interviews to understand individual experiences, process evaluations to evaluate the implementation process, and pre-post and correlational studies to provide a basis for further refinement.
On the other hand, the summative research component would aim to evaluate the overall impact of NICO's programs and offer more definitive conclusions about their effectiveness as this component comprises impact evaluations to detail the impact of NICO's educational support, quasi-experimental studies to provide a more rigorous assessment of NICO's impact, and randomized control studies to evaluate the causality of NICO's interventions on academic and social outcomes.
The desired outputs of the 12-week LEAP Project Sprint are intended to provide a comprehensive view of NICO's impact, from process evaluations to rigorous impact assessments. This comprehensive approach will support ongoing program improvement and bolster the case for further investment and collaboration. We are grateful for the opportunity to strengthen the evidence base, ensuring that NICO is effective, scalable, and aligned with its strategic goals.
AME will implement the outcome of the 12-week LEAP Project sprint by integrating findings into its strategic planning, program design, and operational processes. AME aims to leverage the outputs obtained through the project to enhance the NICO program and achieve its objectives.
Integrating the findings into the strategic planning and decision-making will incorporate insights from usability and feasibility studies, case studies, and user interviews to refine AME's strategic approach. This may lead to the introduction of new program elements or the modification of existing ones. Through process evaluations, AME will also identify inefficiencies or bottlenecks in its operations, enabling targeted improvements in program delivery and resource allocation.
AME will leverage the formative research outputs to enhance the design of the NICO program and ensure it meets the needs of its beneficiaries. Insights from pre-post and correlational studies will guide adjustments to NICO's educational, social, and spiritual components, ensuring they are practical and user-friendly. Additionally, findings from the user interviews and case studies will inform AME's approach to family engagement, leading to more effective methods for fostering stable family environments.
AME will use the outputs to improve its implementation processes and optimize operations. The process evaluations and impact evaluations will help AME streamline program delivery, reducing inefficiencies and enhancing the overall experience for beneficiaries. Further, the findings will guide staff training and development, ensuring that AME's team has the skills and knowledge to implement program changes effectively.
AME will establish a system for monitoring the ongoing impact of changes based on the LEAP Project outputs. The outputs will be used to create a framework for ongoing monitoring and evaluation, allowing AME to track the effectiveness of program adjustments and make further changes as needed. The organization will rely on the outputs to make data-driven decisions, using evidence to guide program evolution and strategic direction.
AME aims to communicate the outcomes and changes to its stakeholders, ensuring transparency and fostering collaboration. By sharing results with donors and partners, the outputs will be used to demonstrate the impact of the LEAP Project and secure continued support. Sharing results with the community will help build trust and encourage greater engagement and participation in NICO's programs.
In conclusion, AME plans to leverage the outputs from the LEAP Project to enhance the NICO program. The organization's approach to implementing the findings is multi-faceted, encompassing strategic planning, program design, implementation optimization, monitoring, and stakeholder engagement. This approach ensures that the findings effectively improve the NICO program and contribute to AME's mission of supporting children and families in Honduras.
