CHILD RIGHTS AND YOU
- Hybrid of for-profit and nonprofit
- Lesotho
Back then in 2004 I started a preschool at Ha Tsolo Maseru. This is the industrial site where most of the people especially women from all parts of the rural places of Lesotho come to seek employment in the firms.
I started with 20 kids and used the rented 2 roomed house. At first I was targeting the kids whom their parents were working in the firms and could not afford the nannies to take care of their little ones let alone to take them to school as they started to work as early as 0600hrs. But in the end, there were more kids from the nearby homes. The fees were so little since I was aware that the parents were earning very little from the firms.
With Covid 19 pandemic, most of the firms were closed and the parents started to seek employment to the neighboring countries of Lesotho thus leaving the kids to take care of each other; meaning some kids at the age of 7 years were becoming the parents to the younger siblings. Due to this situation, these young parents are faced with different challenges such as: rejection and stigma from community members, dropping out of school due to poverty as they have to provide food, adequate shelter and other basic needs for their families.
The purpose of my organization is to build the dormitories and expand the preschool for these kids. The intention is to give these kids the secure place against starvation, harsh climate, molesters and human trafficking as their parents continue to work outside the country.
The aim is to house +-100 kids ageing 2-6 years and +-100 kids who will be attending the primary schools in the nearby schools but then at the end of the day, they will have a home to welcome them after school.
The project will also create employment to the nearby community as I am going to need the people who will cook and clean for the kids. I will also need the people who will be working in the gardens because the kids will be eating most of the vegetables from the same garden.
In the short run, I want these kids to mix with other kids from the well-off families. The kids from these other families will being paying the fees and thus help to subsides the need or gap which be caused by the other ones who could not afford. In this way these vulnerable kids will not feel like they don't belong to the community. It will also increase their self-confidence thus building the best future leaders of this country.
The parents will still have the connection with their little ones during school holidays but those whom the parents will still be outside the country would still be staying at the dormitories.

The project is going to solve the problems of the kids who can't afford to go to school because their parents cannot afford the fees.
With the Internet labs which will be available the kids will interact with the outside world and make their own researches
It will also assist with the residence of the kids whom their parents are working outside the country or even for those who work odd hours ( Night shifts)
The project will solve the issue of security to these kids as they will be staying in the safe place.
The project will also solve the rate of unemployment as there be the nannies, teachers, security guards and gardeners.
With the new playgrounds the kids will be able to stay healthy physically and emotionally.
We also aim to break the wall between the marginalized children and those who are coming from well-off families in order to build one nation with no discrimination that built by their forefathers where the poor are always poor and the servents of well-off. It happened for generation after generation
Classrooms: There will be new and up to date classrooms for these kids. The intention is to have the Computer Labs with unlimited wi-fi to help them with interacting with the outside world and do some research thus help them to improve their level of education and excel in their studies.

Our organisation used Formative research. Country at-large there is a general problem of unemployment that caused a lot of vulnerability of children for us to research and find our target group is very easy because we meet out of school children everyday and when we follow them to their homes we find miserable kind of life.
In some cases we meet village leaders they give us the information about out of school children and the challenges that they are facing every day. Some are coming to our organisation through social workers from other children projects as referrals. We also interviewing some families to understand the problem. Now we have met Karabo ea Bophelo case management workers giving us some cases around our community and then we enrolled them to our program.
In the beginning of our project we used to enroll children based on what we see concerning the quarterly fees, when the parent failed to pay fees we believed that they have problem that they can't solve then we will tell them to stop with payments and that caused the failure to our program, because some people took advantage of us even when they have they will keep depending on us.
Since 2019 we started to work with community leaders where we will get the information about the marginalized children and reach those families through chief or councilor then we interview them and visit the families to be eye witnesses. In some cases we get referrals from other some project like Karabo ea Bophelo that is under implementation of many organisations serving Orphans and vulnerable adolescents and under fives children who are out of school. This method smoothen our work and moving forward we will use all this methods because they are helping us to enroll and serve the vulnerable children who really need our service
FUNDS.
- The organization needs the funds for the fees of these kids.
- The organization needs funds to build classrooms for these kids.
- The organization needs funds to build shelter for these kids.
- The organization needs funds to feed and clothe these kids.
- The organization needs funds to maintain the good health of these kids.
- This is the right time after the Covid 19 pandemic where most of the people were retrenched from their employment while others were receiving the half salaries. Most of the businesses were closed. Most of the factories were also closed down and these were the places where most of the women from the rural places and those who could not get jobs for their qualifications were working. Unemployment rate went up thus causing the misery to those who were earning a little. The problem is becoming worse everyday because some of the parents left behind their kids and their families are now child headed families. In some families a 15 year old child is taking care of the siblings while the parents are off country to seek the job, and these children are suffering because their parents are not yet working they are seeking for the jobs in our neighboring countries
1. How effective will CRY be on improving the level of education and safety of these vulnerable kids ageing 2-12 years?
2. How will the program assist these kids of low- and non--income parents who are working in the firms and as domestic workers in the neighboring countries
2. How best could CRY implement its strategy to ensure its stability and continuity?
- Formative research (e.g. usability studies; feasibility studies; case studies; user interviews; implementation studies; process evaluations; pre-post or multi-measure research; correlational studies)
To evaluate our service it will be helpful if there will be tools from the donor side to be used in our project that will monitor and and evaluate our weekly performance and uses of resources. Our implementation should aline with with our goal.
As we said that our focus is to serve both vulnerable and welloff children for both of them are vulnerable of living smooth life in their communities where they should see each other as human being who need each other than judging each other on haves and don't haves
We plan to incorporate the findings from the user study into our product roadmap, and we expect to implement these changes within three months of receiving the research recommendations. The outputs will help our organization grow or expand in the future. The outputs will also help our organization to be known and re cognised by many stockholders nationally and international
We hope that the research from the LEAP Project will help us improve our product in a way that leads to increased adoption by our target population. We expect to see these changes over the course of two years following the project.
As we are looking to help orphans and vulnerable children in all aspects of life like for them to feel inclusivity in the community we also looking forward to help those children who are coming from well-off families to grow with the different world views from their elders so that in the long life of them and marginalized children there will be peace.
There is a life of tigers and lambs in our country these children grow with wounded hearts and when they grow up they kill those who have and try to own their wealth: Therefore CRY wants to see long term outcomes in their lives. To build the healthy relationship between the two we need professionals and enough resources
