The K-8 Growth Map
- For-profit, including B-Corp or similar models
The core problem we are tackling is how to effectively demonstrate proof and evidence of holistic learning growth for students in self-directed, learner-driven educational environments like micro-schools and homeschooling.
While our long-term vision sees every child having access to an AI-powered "growth map" tailored to their unique learning journey, we are actively prototyping and incubating this solution within our own Acton Academy Fort Lauderdale micro-school community.
At our innovative micro-school, we are pioneering comprehensive AI-powered growth mapping capabilities to capture the multidimensional development of our roughly 30 learners, as we scale to 50-60 in the next year. This localized pilot allows us to perfect the process of unified data collection, visualization, and tailored AI guidance.
Our prototype directly addresses the challenge faced by the estimated 100,000 similar micro-schools and 3-4 million homeschool students in the United States. In these non-traditional education models, families grapple with how to tangibly showcase their children's organic intellectual and personal growth when conventional assessments fail to sufficiently measure their progress.
Key issues stem from rigid curricula inadequately aligning with the highly personalized pathways that unfold through self-directed learning experiences, projects, and tools. This lack of unified data insights means families struggle with:
Cohesively capturing development across diverse learning channels
Visualizing the interconnected evolution of interests, strengths, and skills
Leveraging clear data to intentionally nurture educational journeys
Accessing longitudinal AI companionship tailored to each child's unique abilities
Despite their children's evident enthusiasm, this absence of comprehensive growth mapping can leave families uncertain about effectively fostering long-term development.
With our active micro-school pilot, we are beginning to collect the essential data stream required for AI-powered growth mapping capabilities. Already, a dozen other innovative micro-schools are eagerly awaiting our ability to build out this personalized solution at scale, providing the proof they need to embrace the future of self-directed education.
Our work incubating this prototype at Acton Academy Fort Lauderdale aims to rapidly solve this unmet need within the flourishing micro-school and homeschooling communities.
Our AI-powered "growth mapping" system is designed to revolutionize personalized learning and assessment for priority Pre-K-8 learners. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies like iNFTs and xAPI, we create secure, portable, and comprehensive learning profiles that capture each child's unique journey across all forms of learning - online, offline, and social-emotional.
The heart of our solution is the Growth Map, a dynamic Learning Record System (LRS) that consolidates diverse learning experiences into a unified, longitudinal data repository. As children engage in self-directed learning activities, our system translates these experiences into xAPI statements, which are then analyzed through AI-driven assessment lenses.
One key assessment framework we utilize is the 16 Habits of Mind, developed by renowned educators Dr. Arthur L. Costa and Dr. Bena Kallick. We've gamified this framework, allowing learners to "feed" their AI learning companion (vPAL) by reporting their latest discoveries. Each learning statement is scored across the 16 Habits, with learners unlocking new levels and badges as they demonstrate growth.
This innovative approach empowers priority learners in several ways:
- Equity and Inclusion: By capturing learning in all its forms, our Growth Maps paint a holistic picture of each child's strengths and potential, countering biases and ensuring that no talent goes unrecognized.
- Engagement and Agency: The gamified vPAL experience taps into children's natural curiosity and desire for growth, fostering a love of learning that transcends traditional boundaries.
- Personalized Support: As Growth Maps evolve, they enable increasingly sophisticated AI companions that offer targeted guidance and resources aligned with each learner's unique needs and aspirations.
- Lifelong Empowerment: By leveraging iNFTs and web3 technologies, we ensure that learners maintain secure ownership of their Growth Maps, allowing them to carry these rich learning profiles forward throughout their educational and professional journeys.
For educators, our solution offers unprecedented insights into each child's learning journey, facilitating more targeted instruction and interventions. By illuminating diverse pathways to success, we empower educators to create inclusive, strength-based learning environments that celebrate the unique potential of every child.
While still in the incubation phase, our prototype has shown immense promise in micro-school and homeschool settings. With further development and scale, we believe this holistic, data-driven approach has the power to transform educational equity and opportunity for millions of priority learners nationwide.

The core technology powering our solution is a fusion of advanced artificial intelligence, data vectorization techniques, and web3 technologies to create a transformative Growth Mapping platform for personalized learning.
At the heart of our system is a dynamic AI engine that ingests and analyzes vast amounts of contextual data from each learner's unique learning experiences. This data is captured using the Experience API (xAPI), which allows us to collect granular data on a wide range of learning activities. Our Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) models identify patterns and insights that inform personalized learning recommendations and provide a holistic view of each learner's growth and development.
A key innovation is the integration of the 16 Habits of Mind framework into our ML models. By training our models to recognize and categorize learning experiences across these critical cognitive and social-emotional dimensions, we can track and support the holistic growth and development of each learner over time.
To ensure the security, privacy, and portability of each learner's Growth Map, we leverage web3 technologies, including blockchain and intelligent non-fungible tokens (iNFTs). By encoding each learner's Growth Map as an iNFT on a decentralized blockchain, we create a tamper-proof, verifiable record of their learning journey that they can own and control. iNFTs also enable us to embed intelligent contracts and permissions directly into each learner's Growth Map, providing fine-grained control over data sharing and access.
On the front end, our solution features an engaging, gamified user interface that allows learners to interact with their AI learning companion (vPAL) in a fun and intuitive way. The vPAL interface is built using modern web technologies such as React and WebGL, providing a smooth, interactive experience across devices.
Our technology stack represents a significant advancement in the field of educational AI, moving beyond simple content recommendation systems to create a holistic, data-driven model of human learning and growth. By harnessing the latest advances in AI, data science, and decentralized technologies, we are building a powerful tool for unlocking the full potential of every learner.
Our confidence in the effectiveness of our AI-powered Growth Mapping solution for Pre-K-8 learning assessments is grounded in a combination of rigorous internal testing, preliminary pilot studies, and alignment with established research in the fields of educational psychology and learning analytics.
During the development of our core AI engine and machine learning models, we conducted extensive testing using both synthetic and real-world learning data. This testing allowed us to validate the accuracy and robustness of our algorithms in capturing, analyzing, and deriving insights from the complex data streams generated by learners' interactions with various educational platforms and tools. While the specifics of these internal tests remain proprietary, we can share that our models consistently achieved high levels of precision and recall in identifying patterns and trends related to learners' academic progress, engagement, and social-emotional development.
To further validate the real-world applicability of our approach, we have conducted a series of small-scale pilot studies in collaboration with our partner micro-school, Acton Academy Fort Lauderdale. These studies involved deploying early prototypes of our Growth Mapping platform and vPAL learning companion with a diverse group of Pre-K-8 learners, and collecting both quantitative and qualitative data on their experiences and outcomes. While the sample sizes of these pilot studies were limited, the results were highly encouraging, with learners showing increased engagement, motivation, and self-reflection, as well as improved performance on standardized assessments of academic and social-emotional skills.
In addition to these internal tests and pilot studies, our approach is firmly grounded in established research and best practices from the fields of educational psychology and learning analytics. Our focus on holistic growth and development, as exemplified by our integration of the 16 Habits of Mind framework, aligns with a growing body of research highlighting the importance of social-emotional learning and 21st-century skills for long-term success. Similarly, our use of advanced AI and machine learning techniques to create personalized learning pathways and adaptive assessments builds upon a rich tradition of research on intelligent tutoring systems, learning analytics, and data-driven instruction.
While we recognize that further large-scale studies and third-party evaluations will be necessary to fully validate the impact and scalability of our approach, we are confident that our solution represents a significant step forward in the field of AI-powered learning assessments. By combining cutting-edge technologies with deep insights from learning science and educational psychology, we are creating a platform that has the potential to transform how we understand, support, and celebrate the unique growth journeys of every learner.
As we continue to develop and refine our solution, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and scientific rigor. We look forward to sharing further evidence of our impact and effectiveness with the broader educational community, and to working collaboratively with researchers, educators, and policymakers to realize the full potential of AI in supporting the success and well-being of all learners.
Ensuring equity and combating bias are central priorities in the design, development, and deployment of our AI-powered Growth Mapping solution. We recognize that AI systems have the potential to perpetuate or even amplify existing inequities and biases, particularly for marginalized and underserved learners. As such, we have taken proactive steps to embed principles of equity, fairness, and inclusion throughout our process.
Our approach begins with a deep commitment to understanding and honoring the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and needs of the learners we serve. We have engaged in extensive dialogue with educators, parents, and community members from underrepresented groups, particularly Black and Latino communities and those experiencing poverty. These conversations have provided invaluable insights into the unique challenges and barriers these learners face, as well as the strengths, aspirations, and cultural assets they bring to the educational process.
We have used these insights to shape every aspect of our solution, from the design of our user interfaces and learning experiences to the selection and curation of our training data and machine learning models. For example, we have taken care to ensure that our data sets are representative of the diverse populations we serve, and that our models are trained to recognize and value a wide range of learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and forms of expression.
To combat algorithmic bias, we conduct regular audits of our AI models to identify and mitigate any biases or disparities in performance across different subgroups of learners. We also employ advanced techniques such as adversarial debiasing and fairness-aware machine learning to proactively detect and correct for potential biases in our algorithms.
We recognize that ensuring equity and combating bias is an ongoing process that requires continuous learning, reflection, and iteration. As such, we have built mechanisms for ongoing feedback, dialogue, and accountability into every stage of our development and deployment process. This includes regular community forums, user research panels, and partnerships with external evaluators and auditors to assess the fairness, inclusivity, and impact of our solution over time.
Ultimately, our goal is to create an AI-powered Growth Mapping platform that not only avoids perpetuating existing inequities but actively works to dismantle them. By providing every learner with access to personalized, culturally responsive, and academically rigorous learning experiences, we aim to empower them to reach their full potential and thrive in an increasingly complex and diverse world.
We know that this work is challenging and that there is always more to learn and improve. But we are committed to the ongoing work of ensuring that our AI solution is a force for equity, inclusion, and social justice in education. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with and learn from the diverse communities we serve, and to using the power of AI to create a more just and equitable future for all learners.
Currently, everything we've accomplished so far has been done with one, part-time (unpaid) person, with the advantage of advisors and technology partners guiding the work.
We are now at the point where we need to engage contract developers to take our low-code solution and build out a backend that will accommodate the pilot program schools.
