Solution Pitch

The Problem

Through our app, "Yucayekeno Connect," we tackle data sovereignty, tribal enrollment, and community connectivity among the Borikua Taino. Colonialism and gentrification threaten our ancestral sites, erasing identity. This issue affects 9 million Puerto Ricans, 61% of whom carry Taino DNA but lack recognition and resources to preserve our heritage.

The Solution

Yucayekeno Connect is a user-friendly mobile app designed to help the Borikua Taino community reconnect with their cultural heritage and ancestral lands. Serving as a digital hub, the app allows users to register their ancestry, trace family lineages, and explore Taino history through interactive maps of ancestral sites. It also features educational content on language revitalization, traditional practices, and oral histories, bridging generational gaps. By prioritizing data sovereignty and cultural relevance, Yucayekeno Connect empowers the Borikua Taino people to preserve their traditions, protect sacred sites, and strengthen their national identity.

Stats

The Yucayekeno Connect app seeks to preserve the heritage of over 5 million people in Puerto Rico with Taino ancestry
