Quest Digital Literacy Project
- Ghana
- Hybrid of for-profit and nonprofit
In Sub-Saharan African countries like Ghana, digital literacy among teachers is alarmingly low, hindering the effective integration of technology in education and limiting students' access to 21st-century learning opportunities. This digital disparity is not isolated to Ghana but is a global issue affecting educators in many developing countries.
In Ghana alone, there are about 27,380 Primary & Junior High Schools and approximately 450,000 basic school teachers across 262 districts. These hardworking teachers lack fundamental digital skills, including proficiency in using computers, navigating the internet, and leveraging digital tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. As a result, classroom instruction often falls short of incorporating modern teaching methodologies and interactive learning experiences that can significantly enhance students' educational outcomes.
Local statistics highlight the urgency of this issue with nearly 8 out of every 10 teachers being digital illiterates. Only a small percentage of teachers have received formal training in digital literacy, with many lacking accesses to computers and reliable internet connectivity. This has a direct impact on students' digital literacy levels and limits their exposure to digital learning opportunities.
Globally, the digital literacy gap among educators is a widespread challenge, particularly in developing regions where access to technology and digital resources is limited. According to UNESCO, over 63 million primary and secondary school teachers worldwide lack adequate digital skills for effective teaching in today's digital age. This situation not only impacts the quality of education but also widens the disparity in educational opportunities between developed and developing countries.
Several factors contribute to the digital literacy problem faced by teachers in Ghana and globally. Insufficient training and professional development opportunities, limited access to digital infrastructure and resources, inadequate funding for educational technology initiatives, and a lack of awareness about the importance of digital literacy all play a role in exacerbating the problem.
Therefore, bridging this gap is essential for ensuring equitable access to quality education and empowering educators with the skills they need to prepare students for success in a digital world.
The Quest Digital Literacy Project. This is an innovative initiative aimed at empowering basic school teachers in Ghana with essential digital skills to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom. Our solution revolves around assessments, comprehensive training, and certifications, backed by cutting-edge technology and strategic partnerships.
Here's how it works in simple terms:
Accreditation: Our program has received accreditation from the National Teaching Council of Ghana, ensuring that our training meets the highest standards of quality and relevance in the education sector

These certifications validate their skills and enhance their professional credentials, positioning them as adept users of technology in the classroom.
Our solution is not just about imparting digital skills; it's about empowering teachers to transform their teaching methodologies and enhance student learning outcomes. By bridging the digital divide in education, we are paving the way for a more inclusive and technology-enabled learning environment in Ghana's basic schools.
Many of the teachers enrolled in our program have been waiting a lifetime for this opportunity to be trained and integrated into the digital world. The Quest Digital Literacy Project is dedicated to serving and uplifting underserved basic school teachers in Ghana, specifically targeting six underserved districts in our current pilot phase. These districts include Atiwa West and Akuapim North in the Eastern Region, Mfantsiman and Cape Coast in the Central Region, and Asokore Mampong and Sekyere South in the Ashanti Region. Together, the excitement of our training which is the first of its kind has drawn nearly 4000 teachers who are currently enrolled in our project.
The target population for our solution includes teachers who face significant challenges due to limited access to digital resources and training opportunities. These teachers are often underserved in terms of professional development and support, hindering their ability to integrate technology effectively into their teaching practices and provide quality education to their students.
Teachers in underserved districts often lack access to up-to-date digital tools and training, leading to gaps in digital literacy skills and teaching methodologies. This not only affects their own professional growth but also impacts the learning outcomes of their students, who may be deprived of valuable digital learning experiences and opportunities.
The Quest Digital Literacy Project aims to address these pressing needs and challenges by providing comprehensive training, assessments, and certifications in digital literacy to underserved teachers. Here's how our solution will impact their lives:

This leads to improved academic performance and better preparedness for future success among students.
- Professional Development: By obtaining globally recognized certifications in digital literacy, teachers enhance their professional credentials and career prospects. They become more competitive in the job market and gain opportunities for advancement and leadership roles within the education sector.
- Access to Resources: Our solution provides teachers with access to a wealth of educational resources, lesson plans, multimedia materials, and online learning platforms. This enables them to diversify their teaching methods, adapt to varying learning styles, and cater to the individual needs of their students.
- Bridging the Digital Divide: The Quest Digital Literacy Project bridges the digital divide in education by ensuring that teachers in underserved districts have equitable access to technology and training. This fosters inclusivity, innovation, and digital empowerment within the education system.
We believe that empowering teachers leads to positive ripple effects, benefiting students, schools, and communities as a whole.
I grew up in the Asokore Mampong District of Ashanti Region in Ghana. For the first 15 years of my life, I walked 10 to 12 miles every school day to get an education. My parents were poor and we had no access to a computer or internet in our home. My primary school and its teachers never touched a computer until recently, through donations. I never touched a computer until I was 18years of age and the story is the same for almost every kid I grew up with.
As the Team Lead of the Quest Digital Literacy Project, I am well-positioned, along with my team, to deliver this impactful solution to our target population of underserved teachers in Ghana. Our proximity to the communities we serve, coupled with our deep understanding of their needs and challenges, makes us uniquely qualified to design and implement a solution that is meaningful and effective.
Our team comprises individuals who have direct experience working within the education sector in Ghana, particularly in the regions and districts we are targeting. We have educators, curriculum developers, and technology specialists who have firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by teachers in underserved communities. This proximity allows us to empathize with their struggles and tailor our solution to address their specific needs and priorities.
Moreover, our Team Lead and team members are representative of these communities in several ways. Many of us have lived and worked in the regions and districts we are serving, giving us a deep cultural and contextual understanding of the local education landscape. We speak the languages spoken in these communities, understand their cultural nuances, and have built strong relationships with local stakeholders, including teachers, school administrators, and community leaders.
The design and implementation of our solution are meaningfully guided by the input, ideas, and agendas of the communities we serve. We believe in a participatory approach that involves community engagement, collaboration, and co-creation. Before developing our training programs and resources, we conducted extensive needs assessments, focus groups, and consultations with teachers and education experts in the target districts.
Through these interactions, we gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by teachers in terms of digital literacy, access to resources, and professional development opportunities. We incorporated their feedback and suggestions into the design of our training modules, ensuring that our solution is relevant, practical, and impactful.
So, our team's proximity, cultural competence, and community-centered approach make us the right people to design and deliver the Quest Digital Literacy Project. We are committed to empowering teachers and transforming education outcomes in underserved communities through innovation, collaboration, and a deep-rooted understanding of local contexts.

- Pilot
The Pilot stage was selected for the Quest Digital Literacy Project based on a strategic approach to ensure the effectiveness and scalability of our solution before full-scale implementation. During this stage, we have focused on building and testing key components of our training program, engaging with beneficiaries, and gathering valuable insights to inform further development.
One of the significant achievements during the Pilot stage has been the successful assessment of over 2000 basic school teachers across the six districts in Ghana. These assessments focused on evaluating their proficiency in basic computer skills and internet basics. The initial pass rate for these assessments was 22%, highlighting a clear need for comprehensive digital literacy training among teachers in these underserved communities.
Additionally, we conducted assessments for our Master Trainers, who are our helper facilitators and current ICT teachers in the districts. The pass rate for Master Trainers was 37% initially, indicating a gap in their digital literacy knowledge and teaching capacities.
Building upon these assessments, we have already commenced training for our Master Trainers. This training has shown remarkable progress, with over 85% improvement in their pass rates. This improvement demonstrates the effectiveness of our training approach and the potential for impactful outcomes among our target beneficiaries.
Furthermore, our efforts in the Pilot stage have involved extensive community engagement and collaboration. We have garnered support from local leaders, including chiefs, district, and regional directors of education, who are actively driving teacher participation in our program. Their involvement has been instrumental in promoting awareness, facilitating registrations, and fostering a conducive environment for learning and development.
In terms of customer or beneficiary reach, we have directly served and engaged with over 2000 basic school teachers through assessments and initial training interventions. Additionally, our Master Trainers, over 50 of them, have also benefited from our training programs, contributing to a cascading effect of knowledge and skills transfer within the education ecosystem.
As we prepare for the training sessions scheduled for June 2024, we are in the final stages of teacher registrations, ensuring maximum participation and impact. The insights gathered and progress made during the Pilot stage have provided a strong foundation for scaling up our efforts and reaching even more teachers in Ghana, ultimately driving positive change and improving digital literacy standards in education.
Our motivation for joining Solve goes beyond raising funds; it is about amplifying our impact, fostering partnerships, and driving systemic change. We want to shine a spotlight on the digital inequity that exists in Ghana and the rest of Africa, advocating for digital literacy for all educators and students. Africa has long been overlooked and marginalized, and we believe it is time to bring the world's attention to the immense potential and talent that exist within these communities.
By participating in Solve, we aim to start a global digital literacy conversation that transcends borders and impacts the lives of the underserved and children living in poverty today. We envision a future where every educator and student in Ghana and Africa has access to quality digital education, empowering them to thrive in the digital age and contribute meaningfully to the global village.
We are applying to Solve because we believe in the power of collective action and collaboration to address complex challenges. Solve's platform offers a unique opportunity to connect with partners who can provide not only financial support but also technical expertise, legal guidance, cultural insights, and market access.
As we continue our journey with the Quest Digital Literacy Project, we recognize several barriers that Solve can help us overcome:

Solve's platform can facilitate introductions to potential partners, investors, and collaborators, opening doors for strategic alliances and market expansion.
- Business Model (e.g. product-market fit, strategy & development)
- Financial (e.g. accounting practices, pitching to investors)
- Legal or Regulatory Matters
- Technology (e.g. software or hardware, web development/design)
While numerous organizations have made valuable contributions to digital literacy in Africa, our unique focus on empowering educators marks a paradigm shift. We understand that the foundation of effective learning lies in equipping teachers with the necessary skills and resources. By doing so, we not only impact current students but also lay the groundwork for future generations to thrive in the digital age. This innovative approach, combined with our dedication to student-centered outcomes, sets our solution apart and promises transformative change in the education landscape.
Our solution to the digital literacy challenge is innovative in several key ways, setting it apart from previous efforts and catalyzing broader positive impacts within the education landscape.
- Government Provided Laptops: When this project was conceived some three years ago, we figured the only way our approach becomes successful is every teacher having access to a computer. We lobbied with some teacher groups and policy makers that put pressure on the government to provide them with laptops. As of today, over 75% of the entire teacher population in Ghana have access to a laptop. By the end of June 2024, it is estimated that every basic school teacher in Ghana would have been supplied with a laptop. Hence, step one of our innovative strategies would have been achieved.
- Holistic Approach: Unlike many organizations that focus solely on students, our solution takes a holistic approach by targeting educators—the teachers who play a pivotal role in shaping the learning experiences of students. By equipping teachers with digital literacy skills, we create a multiplier effect that extends to generations of students, ultimately transforming the education ecosystem.
- Interactive Learning: During our strategy sessions, we envisioned a dynamic learning environment where teachers and students interact and collaborate using digital tools. This interactive approach goes beyond traditional teaching methods, fostering engagement, creativity, and critical thinking skills among learners. By bridging the digital divide between teachers and students, we create a symbiotic learning ecosystem that fuels continuous growth and improvement.
- Long-term Impact: By focusing on teacher training and capacity building, our solution creates sustainable, long-term impact. Educators become proficient in leveraging technology to deliver personalized and effective instruction, leading to improved student learning outcomes, increased retention rates, and a more inclusive and equitable education system.
- Changing the Landscape: Our innovative approach has the potential to catalyze broader positive impacts across the education landscape in Ghana and Africa. As more teachers become digitally literate and embrace innovative teaching practices, the entire education sector undergoes a transformation. This ripple effect extends to policymakers, curriculum developers, Edtech providers, and other stakeholders, driving systemic change and paving the way for a future-ready workforce.
As a team, our working theory is that empowering teachers with digital literacy skills will have a cascading positive impact on the educational landscape in Ghana and Africa as a whole. By providing comprehensive training to teachers on basic computer skills, internet basics, and essential software like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, we are equipping them with the tools they need to enhance their teaching methods and engage students more effectively.
The logic behind our approach is straightforward:
- We are providing training to teachers across six underserved districts in Ghana, focusing on practical digital skills that they can integrate into their teaching practices.
- By enhancing teachers' digital literacy skills, we anticipate an improvement in teaching standards, leading to more interactive and engaging classroom environments.
- When teachers are proficient in using digital tools, students are more likely to benefit from innovative teaching methods, leading to improved learning outcomes and better academic performance.
- Addressing digital literacy among teachers is a crucial step in bridging the digital divide in education, ensuring that all students, regardless of background, have access to quality education.
Feedback from pilot training sessions and assessments of both Master Trainers, teachers and students so far provides ongoing validation of our approach and its potential impact.
Overall, the Quest Project continues to believe that investing in teachers' digital literacy is not just about equipping individuals with skills; it's about transforming education systems and empowering future generations with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Our impact goals for the Quest Digital Literacy Project are as follows:
- Improve Digital Literacy: Our primary impact goal is to significantly improve digital literacy among basic school teachers in Ghana. We aim to equip teachers with the necessary skills to effectively integrate technology into their teaching methods, thereby enhancing student engagement and critical thinking skills.
- Enhance Student Learning Outcomes: By empowering teachers with digital literacy skills, we expect to see a direct impact on student learning outcomes. Our goal is to improve academic achievement, increase student engagement, and foster a more interactive and dynamic learning environment.

We believe that digitally literate educators will be better equipped to explore innovative teaching methods, collaborate with peers, and stay updated with the latest educational technologies.
To measure our progress towards these impact goals, we use a combination of quantitative and qualitative indicators:
- We track the performance of teachers in our training programs through assessment results, focusing on areas they need improvements in digital literacy skills, teaching methodologies, and student outcomes.
- We collect feedback from participating teachers through surveys and interviews to gauge their satisfaction with the training, perceived improvements in teaching practices, and impact on student learning.
- Most of our Master Trainers are School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs) in Ghana, who are in charge of supporting both teachers and pupils to ensure effective teaching and learning in schools. We utilize them to conduct classroom observations to assess how teachers are applying their digital literacy skills in teaching, the level of student engagement, and the overall effectiveness of digital tools in enhancing learning outcomes.
- By the end of the year, we will be analyzing student performance data, such as test scores and academic achievements, to measure the impact of digitally literate teachers on student learning outcomes.
