Currently, India’s prison population amounts to 573,220. Recidivism is a major challenge faced by the Indian justice system. In the capital city of Delhi, for instance, 17% of 3132 convicts are repeat convicts and a whopping 33% of the 60467 undertrials are repeat undertrials. Among the key causes of recidivism is punitive justice systems that fail to focus on rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Having been isolated from society for prolonged periods, a lack of effective communication skills and self-control hinders incarcerated individuals’ reintegration into society, exacerbating the stigma already existing around them, including employers’ reservations about hiring these individuals.
Similar troubles are faced by tribal communities. There are approximately 370 million tribal individuals globally, spread across 90 countries. In India, tribal groups represent about 8.6% of the nation’s total population, equating to over 104 million people. These communities often face barriers to education and lack resources that would help develop crucial life skills such as effective communication. This skill would be quintessential for them not only to uplift their standard of living but also to preserve and spread their culture.
These communities face unique challenges to educational access owing to several factors. Firstly, most tribal communities reside in geographically remote areas where access to educational resources and skilled educators is sparse. Correctional facilities, on the other hand, often put security on a higher pedestal than rehabilitation. So while limited conventional education and vocational training programs do exist, essential life skills like communication are often neglected. Even if rare workshops are conducted, they tend to lack both incentive and progress-tracking. Most importantly, social stigmas surround both tribal communities and inmates that discourage investment in their education and personal development.
The technological backbone of TeachSpeech includes several AI-powered components that enhance the learning process:
1. NLP and Speech Recognition: Just as words are used when one is talking or reaching conclusions through a conversation, they’re valuable in creating narratives of individuals. TeachSpeech judges how fluently, correctly and properly the users are using the language and give immediate feedback that helps users make their speeches more refined. The feedback that comes in at this stage is very important and aids the target group to improve while at the same time, they get conscious of the words that come out of their mouth.
2. Facial Recognition and Analysis: Communication of TeachSpeech involves non-verbal components, eye contact and facial expressions in mind. It teaches the target audience the strategies that have to do with using body language to communicate appropriately orally or in other situations for effective societal reintegration.
3. Data Analytics: Data analytics supports tracking the progress of the inmates and tribal groups, and it also upgrades the materials of the courses depending on the changing needs of the audience. Thus, data analytics helps to keep the curriculum fresh and to respond to the learners’ problems.
4. Speech Synthesis: This technology allows the creation of programs, that can be used for an interaction in several languages that, consequently, will attract a big group who do not share the same native language. That may be observed already in the tribal region, where native dialects differ greatly and the languages between them demonstrate a very substantial divergence from each other.
Moreover, as international debaters, we, at TeachSpeech, value the importance of techniques in life: each method the artist chooses offers something more than we would immediately suspect, for they also play more roles than what we see from them.
TeachSpeech follows a systematic procedure:
Step 1: Multiple Intelligence Techniques:
The audience is involved through visuals, audio, kinesthetic activities, and either personal or group discussions, which are a proven method to motivate our audience. With storytelling and questions that raise interest, we try to discover the topic through people who do not know about it.
Step 2: Divergent Thinking
We come up with creative thinking through the asking of open-ended questions, and brainstorming which changes the things that are normally considered to be true. As a result, innovations are generated. Also, there is an environment that respects all the ideas coming from all directions.
Step 3: Knowledge Distribution
Classes start with introductory lessons then to organized learning including lecture, demonstrations and highlighted case studies in order to better comprehend complex theory.
Step 4: Whole Language Method
We lean our perspective to the whole language approach that makes the practical skills more important which involve debates, role-plays, and presentations, because such practical skills help the participants of the course to apply their knowledge in real situations.
Step 5: Reflection-Based Learning
We facilitate reflection through self-assessment and peer feedback, empowering individuals to identify areas for growth and meaningful goals for personal and professional development.
That’s our approach.
TeachSpeech serves two key demographics: prisoners and tribal groups. These are among the most vulnerable population groups, seriously discriminated against on the standards of aptitude development and personal development, lacking strong communication skills in particular. Inmates are often confined to environments with minimal focus on rehabilitation education. Limited opportunities for developing communication skills leave many unprepared for reintegration into society, hindering their employment prospects and increasing recidivism risks. Plus, each inmate post-release is looked down upon and finds no motivation in anything he does. Eventually, he gets depressed or commits another crime. TeachSpeech puts an end to it by providing them with the essential skills and required confidence to deal with such situations by making every inmate reflect their own actions divergently. Tribal Groups face geographical isolation and cultural barriers that restrict access to conventional education systems. They are either socially excluded or socially isolated due to different conversational languages. TeachSpeech, with its AI-powered technology, aims to provide personalized coaching that will uplift these tribal individuals making them leaders, but at the same time give them an opportunity to learn in their own language.
We aim to bring public speaking coaching to overlooked communities—rural villages where the nearest library is 10 miles away, and prisons where self-expression is limited to an hour a week. Without the skills to communicate ideas, share stories, and speak up, potential changemakers remain voiceless.
We want to pass on this empowerment through our beginner and advanced curriculums catered to adults and youth. Our coaching provides a judgement-free space for trainees to grow their confidence, self-control, and delivery skills to make people listen. They leave equipped to share ideas, lead meetings, ace interviews, and stir change in their communities.
With more voices added to local and global conversations, imagine the fresh innovations and progress we can achieve together.
Our team comprises individuals who have grappled with similar issues facing the communities we are on a mission to uplift.
Our team includes a shy, stuttering child who faced significant challenges with public speaking turned an international debater who is well-aware of the obstacles covering the path from an inability to express oneself to being an effective communicator. Not only this, he also understands the transformative impact it can have on one’s life.
We also have onboard a student who has spent the past two years advocating for prison reforms, and consequently spent a lot of time with prison populations. Be it hosting health camps, beautifying wastelands, organizing expressive writing workshops to improve mental health or successfully advocating for the construction of rooms for conjugal visits, our team members are compassionate individuals who humanize inmates and refuse to demonise them.
Our team at TeachSpeech is deeply rooted in the experiences and challenges faced by the communities we aim to serve. This personal connection and understanding are fundamental to our ability to design and deliver an effective solution tailored to the unique needs of inmates and tribal groups.
Proximity to the Communities
The team lead, myself, shares a profound personal connection with the core mission of TeachSpeech. Growing up, I faced significant challenges with public speaking—struggling with nervousness and the inability to communicate effectively in front of others. My transformation began in high school, where a public speaking course unlocked my potential and set me on a path to empowerment. This personal journey from silence to voice gives me unique insight into the struggles faced by our target communities, who are often voiceless in society. My co-founder and I, both seasoned international debaters, bring a wealth of experience in overcoming communication barriers, further aligning our personal missions with the goals of TeachSpeech.
Community-Guided Solution
The design and implementation of our TeachSpeech program are deeply influenced by continuous engagement with the communities we serve. We implement a bottom-up approach in our curriculum development, where feedback and insights from the participants directly shape the program. This includes regular workshops and feedback sessions held within correctional facilities and tribal areas, where community members can express their needs, offer ideas, and share their experiences.
Furthermore, we have established advisory groups within these communities, consisting of respected local leaders and former participants who now serve as mentors. These groups ensure that our program not only addresses the immediate skill needs of the communities but also aligns with their broader aspirations and cultural values.
By intertwining our personal experiences with direct input from the communities, TeachSpeech is uniquely positioned to deliver a solution that is not only effective but also empowering and respectful to the individuals it aims to serve.
