SDG 4, and particularly its target 4.7, aims to ensure that by the year 2030, all students will learn the skills necessary to support sustainable development. This includes learning about sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, peace, global citizenship, and how diverse cultures contribute to sustainability. SDGtalks.ai supports this goal by making these topics accessible and engaging for university students worldwide through an innovative platform that uses AI to make learning about these global goals relevant and interactive.

However, despite the growing urgency highlighted by the 2030 deadline for the SDGs, climate change concerns, and the educational disruption created by the COVID-19 crisis, many students graduate lacking the comprehensive knowledge required to effectively address these issues.

As of 2022, there were approximately 235 million students enrolled in tertiary education worldwide. This substantial figure provides us an idea of the magnitude of the challenge in ensuring these students are equipped with the necessary SDG literacy. 

Adding up to that, universities acknowledge they aren't fully ready to incorporate AI in their teaching methods. Even though AI technology is improving fast, many schools haven't caught up. They often use AI just for quick tasks like creating content, not for deep learning or critical thinking. This means students aren't getting the best learning experience or preparing well for real-world problems. This gap in readiness not only affects the quality of education but also fails to prepare students for the complexities of modern global challenges. Universities need innovative educational tools like SDGtalks.ai that promote active learning, critical analysis, and discussions that go beyond traditional learning methods.

Quality education for sustainable development is about what people learn, its relevance to today’s world and global challenges, and how learners develop the skills and attitudes to respond to such challenges and prosper, now and for future generations (UNESCO, 2014a: 21).

SDGtalks.ai is revolutionizing tertiary education with a dynamic approach that integrates global news analysis into the study of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using cutting-edge AI technology. 

SDGtalks.ai was constructed using ICT information from the United Nations related to the Sustainable Development Goals and the SDG mapping, both wonderful resources that helped us identify the queries and fine tune the search to then allocate it under the correct SDG.

Using LLM models (ChatGPT) and AI image generator, the "SDGtalks bot" rewrites each article in a structured mode, framed on content that is exclusively related to the SDGs.

Understanding the methodology:

1. The platform globally sources news articles, applying AI to perform tasks of clipping and rewriting, aligning each piece with the most relevant SDG.

2. It provides a structured presentation that includes a table of contents built upon 3 main queries revealing the interlinkages among various SDG goals, targets, and indicators.

3. Each news item is visually represented by an AI-generated image.

Our proposed solution also makes the user an integral part of it. Students using the platform are invited to contribute, sharing articles, videos, podcasts or simply creating their own content from scratch. 

Teachers become moderators and are encouraged to propose classes where the AI-student debate is part of the learning process. Topics involving ethical AI, identifying biases, and generating prompts that are not just surfacing immediate responses, but rather applying deep level of inquiries while continuously adopting fact-checking.

Another advantage for universities using SDGtalks.ai is to count on one unique space for concentrating the SDG material generated by the students.

As per the Times Higher Education's 2023 Impact Rankings, 1,705 universities from 115 countries are assessed on their commitment to the SDGs, reflecting a substantial global engagement.

SDGtalks.ai has already made a positive impact in educational settings. We've reached 700 people across the U.S. and Latin America. Here’s a simple breakdown of what we’ve achieved:

1. Global Classroom Initiative: We tested SDGtalks.ai with a program called the Global Classroom, which started at Columbia University. This classroom connects students from all over the world and brings in experts to discuss big issues like health and economics. Using our platform, students and teachers created around 180 articles that helped everyone better understand these topics. All these articles are shared online for anyone interested.

2. University Course in Latin America: At Universidad la Gran Colombia, we ran a full semester course where students used SDGtalks.ai to create different types of content like videos, podcasts, and articles. At the end of the year, three top students were recognized as "Agents of Change through Education" by the local governor. This was a big deal because it showed that the students could use what they learned to make a real impact.

3. Colorado School of Mines: This school is also using our platform to teach their students about sustainable development goals, helping them understand and contribute to global efforts.

4. Serving as a valuable resource for global conferences like COP 28, where participants used the platform to publish impactful articles on sustainability.

Her expertise in integrating education with technology to promote sustainability ensures that SDGtalks.ai is both visionary and practical. Her leadership roles, including Co-Founder and Managing Partner of SDG Investors and CEO of Social Impact Movement, along with her board positions at the UN Association of Miami and Accountable Impact, underline her capability to spearhead initiatives that make a real impact.

His experience in developing technology that captures and analyzes vast amounts of data to generate actionable insights is vital for the adaptive, responsive development of SDGtalks.ai.

We regularly gather feedback from university partners to understand how the platform is being used in real-world educational settings and what improvements are necessary. This feedback informs each iteration of the platform, ensuring that each update is user-centric and tailored to the specific needs of our educational partners. Since its initial launch, SDGtalks.ai has been redesigned and enhanced through three major versions. Each iteration has incorporated more advanced AI features, improved user interface, and expanded content to better meet the needs of our diverse user base. 

Andrés’s technical expertise, particularly in AI, ensures that each version of the platform leverages new technologies to enhance user interaction and content relevance.

We selected the PILOT stage for SDGtalks.ai because we've already developed our prototype and being piloting in Colombia since 2022 and then in 2023 adding the US. In 2024 we will begin the growth process of scaling and refining it based on real-world usage and feedback.

Development and Testing
Initial Build: We developed the core features of SDGtalks.ai, which included AI-driven content curation, an SDG tracker, and interactive tools for educational engagement.
Testing: The platform was first tested internally to ensure functionality and user experience met our initial expectations.

Pilot Deployments
SDSN 2023 Global Classroom: We piloted SDGtalks.ai with the SDSN 2023 Global Classroom at Columbia University, utilizing the platform to enhance educational content and user engagement through tailored SDG-focused articles and discussions.
Content Generation: During this pilot, participants used SDGtalks.ai to generate 169 articles, which are available on our dedicated platform, providing us with valuable data on user interaction and content relevance.
Universidad la Gran Colombia: Over a full academic year, the platform was integrated into the curriculum, where it facilitated the creation of various educational materials, including articles, videos, and podcasts.

Impact and Reach
Beneficiaries: So far, SDGtalks.ai has served over 700 beneficiaries, including students, educators, and academic professionals across the United States and Latin America.
Feedback and Iterations: Feedback from these initial pilots has been instrumental in guiding subsequent versions of the platform, focusing on enhancing AI capabilities, user interface improvements, and expanding the types of content and resources available.

Transition to Growth in 2024

Based on the insights gained from our pilots in Colombia and the U.S., we plan to begin scaling SDGtalks.ai in 2024. This growth phase will involve expanding our reach to more universities worldwide and possibly extending our services to other educational institutions such as community colleges.

SDGTalks.ai is currently operating effectively and is already hosting over 15,000 articles. These articles come from both students and our AI system, demonstrating the robust functionality and impact of our technology.

The platform is widely used by students from prestigious universities around the world. In the United States, contributions have come from Harvard University, Colorado School of Mines, Lynn University, Lehigh University, University of Florida, Seattle University, Howard University, Florida International University, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Hult International Business School. In Latin America, students from Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje Sena, Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, and Universidad La Gran Colombia, Armenia, have also been active users.
