Digital Brilliance Hour (DBH) is tackling a critical and multifaceted problem that stands at the intersection of education, technology, and social equity. At the core of DBH's mission is the recognition of a significant gap in the representation of black and brown (black and Latinx) communities within the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEEAM). This gap is not merely a reflection of current disparities but a pressing issue that, if unaddressed, will exacerbate social and economic inequities in the face of a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has projected that by 2040, 70% of jobs will require some level of computer science knowledge. This forecast underscores an urgent need for educational systems and initiatives to pivot towards preparing all students, especially those from historically underrepresented communities, for a future where digital literacy and technological competencies are indispensable. Yet, despite the increasing demand for tech-savvy professionals, black and brown students remain significantly underrepresented in tech fields and STEEAM education pathways.
The underrepresentation of these communities in tech is not merely a statistical concern but a systemic one, rooted in barriers such as lack of access to quality STEEAM education, socio-economic challenges, and the absence of role models and mentors who reflect the diversity of students. These barriers not only limit individual opportunities for black and brown students but also deprive the tech industry and society of the full spectrum of talent, perspectives, and innovation that these communities can offer.
DBH is dedicated to solving this problem by providing targeted, culturally responsive STEEAM education programs that aim to bridge the gap for black and brown students. Through hands-on workshops, mentorship, and community engagement, DBH seeks to ignite a passion for learning, foster creativity and problem-solving skills, and prepare students for the technological demands of the future. By focusing on empowering these students with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in STEEAM fields, DBH is not only preparing them for future job markets but also challenging and changing the narrative around who can be a leader and innovator in tech.
Moreover, by increasing the representation of black and brown individuals in tech, DBH's efforts contribute to building a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable tech industry. This diversity is crucial for driving innovation, as it brings a variety of perspectives and ideas to the table, leading to more creative solutions and products that better serve a diverse global population.
In summary, DBH is addressing a complex problem that lies at the heart of future workforce preparedness, social equity, and technological advancement. By equipping black and brown students with the STEEAM skills required for the jobs of tomorrow, DBH is not only preparing them for personal success but also contributing to the cultivation of a diverse, innovative, and inclusive future for the tech industry and beyond.

DBH workshops are about turning curiosity into capability. Through these technologies and mentor-guided sessions, students not only learn about STEEAM but also how to apply these skills creatively and practically, opening doors to future opportunities in these fields.
We are dedicated to enriching the lives of black and brown youths, a group historically underrepresented and underserved in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEEAM). This target population comprises students who, due to systemic barriers and socio-economic challenges, have limited access to quality STEEAM education, mentorship, and resources that reflect their cultural experiences and aspirations.
Who are they?
The youths DBH aims to support are primarily from black and Latinx communities within urban and rural areas. These students often attend schools with insufficient STEEAM programs, lack exposure to professional role models in these fields, and face financial barriers that limit their participation in extracurricular STEEAM activities. Their talents and potential remain largely untapped, contributing to the cycle of underrepresentation in STEEAM careers.
How are they currently underserved?
Several factors contribute to the underservice of this population:
- Educational Disparities: Many schools in these communities have limited STEEAM resources, outdated equipment, and a shortage of experienced STEEAM educators.
- Economic Barriers: The cost of STEEAM camps, workshops, and advanced educational programs can be prohibitive for families in these communities.
- Lack of Representation: There's a significant gap in STEEAM role models who share the same cultural and socio-economic backgrounds as these students, impacting their ability to envision themselves in these careers.
Current Underrepresentation:
- Only 8.1% of professionals in technology fields identify as Latinx, and a mere 4.4% as black.
- In music engineering, these numbers are slightly higher yet still disproportionate, with 16.4% identifying as Latinx and 9.7% as black.
These statistics starkly contrast with their overall population percentages, underscoring the extent of underrepresentation and the urgent need for targeted intervention.
How will the solution address their needs?
DBH’s workshops and programs are specifically designed to address these challenges and serve the needs of black and brown youths:
- Accessibility: By offering both in-person and virtual workshops, DBH ensures that quality STEEAM education is accessible regardless of geographical and economic barriers.
