The specific problem within the challenge we are addressing revolves around ineffective science education approaches and a shortage of STEM teachers.
In terms of teaching science, the predominant issues include inadequate content coverage, over-reliance on textbooks, and a focus on memorization rather than fostering a genuine understanding of scientific concepts. Furthermore, there's a notable absence of emphasis on the scientific research process, hindering students' ability to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
This problem is not confined to a single community but has global ramifications. Globally, students across various educational systems struggle with outdated teaching methodologies and insufficient teacher support in science education.
In the United States alone, the shortage of qualified STEM teachers is alarming. Statistics reveal a shortfall of 150,000 STEM educators, significantly impacting the quality of science education in schools. Moreover, approximately 31% of schools in the US are unable to employ an adequate number of teachers, further exacerbating the issue. To cope with this shortage, around 50% of existing teachers are compelled to teach subjects outside their expertise, compromising the quality of instruction and students' learning experiences.
There are approximately 350 million students globally who are enrolled in secondary schools, out of which about 220 million are connected to the Internet. This demographic represents the audience for whom our solutions are tailored. By addressing both the issues of ineffective science education approaches and the shortage of STEM teachers, our solution aims to have a profound impact on this vast student population.
Cosmos is an innovative platform that aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), a set of K-12 science content standards developed to reflect the most current research on science education. By adhering to the NGSS framework, Cosmos ensures that students receive a comprehensive and cohesive science education that prepares them for college, careers, and civic life.
At the heart of Cosmos is an active and research-based learning approach that emphasizes inquiry, exploration, and hands-on experimentation. We selected the current stage because we are currently in the final phases of a 2-year pilot program with the Israeli Ministry of Education (MOE) and have been actively testing our product while striving for product-market fit. Throughout the pilot program, we have made significant iterations to our product based on in-class observations and feedback from teachers.
During the pilot program, we started the first year with three schools, and expanded to 15 schools during the second year. While visit many classes in these schools, and actively gather feedback from teachers and use it to refine our product. This iterative process has allowed us to make substantial improvements and ensure that our solution meets the needs of both educators and students.
Through our participation in the pilot program, we have served about 500 students, teachers and beneficiaries within the Israeli education system. Our focus has been on continuously refining our product based on real-world testing and feedback, rather than solely relying on theoretical models or plans.
Overall, our accomplishments so far include successfully piloting our product in collaboration with the Israeli MOE, expanding our reach to multiple schools, and actively iterating based on feedback from students and educators. This approach has enabled us to make meaningful progress in achieving product-market fit and ensuring that our solution effectively addresses the needs of the target population.

4. Long-term Outcomes:
-- Students are better prepared for future academic and career success in STEM fields.
-- Educational disparities are reduced as more students, including those from underserved communities, have access to quality science education.
-- There is a broader cultural shift towards valuing inquiry-based learning approaches in education.
We expect Cosmos to have this impact based on evidence from research studies demonstrating the effectiveness of inquiry-based learning methods, feedback from educators and students who have used similar interactive platforms, and observations of schools and educational institutions implementing innovative teaching practices. Through Cosmos, we aim to empower students to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and prosperous society.
Our impact goals for Cosmos revolve around enriching science education and fostering a deep understanding of STEM subjects among students. Specifically, our impact goals include:
1. Increase in Student Engagement and Interest in STEM: We aim to see a measurable increase in student engagement and interest in STEM subjects as a result of using Cosmos. This will be measured through surveys and assessments that gauge students' attitudes towards science and their motivation to learn.
2. Improvement in Student Learning Outcomes: We strive to enhance student learning outcomes, including improved understanding of scientific concepts, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking abilities. Progress towards this goal will be measured through pre- and post-assessments, as well as qualitative feedback from educators on students' performance and comprehension.
3. Reduction of Educational Disparities: We aim to reduce educational disparities by ensuring that all students, regardless of their background or circumstances, have access to high-quality science education through Cosmos. Progress towards this goal will be assessed by tracking the demographics of schools and students using Cosmos and monitoring changes in academic achievement and engagement over time.
4. Empowerment of Educators: We seek to empower educators with innovative teaching tools and resources that enhance their ability to deliver effective science education. Progress towards this goal will be measured through feedback from educators on the usability and effectiveness of Cosmos in the classroom, as well as observations of changes in teaching practices and instructional methods.
To measure our progress towards these impact goals, we will collect and analyze various indicators, including:
- Pre- and post-assessment scores to track improvements in student learning outcomes.
- Surveys and interviews with students and educators to assess changes in attitudes, engagement, and teaching practices.
- Demographic data to monitor the reach and inclusivity of Cosmos across different populations and communities.
- Observations and case studies to document real-world examples of how Cosmos is making a difference in classrooms and schools.
By regularly monitoring these indicators and evaluating our progress towards our impact goals, we can ensure that Cosmos continues to have a transformational impact on students' lives and the field of science education as a whole.
The core technology that powers our solution is an innovative engine designed to execute the rules defined by students themselves. This engine operates by taking the rules written by students and running them as specified, disregarding real-world constraints. This unique feature allows students to create and test their own hypotheses, even if they deviate from scientific reality. For instance, if a student hypothesizes that heating the bottom of a container would cause the temperature to drop instead of increase, Cosmos would simulate this scenario accordingly.
Beyond its engine, Cosmos is enveloped by a robust platform that fosters independent learning. Students are provided with the tools and resources to define their own scientific hypotheses, conduct experiments, and observe outcomes within a controlled virtual environment. This promotes autonomy and self-directed learning, empowering students to take ownership of their education and explore scientific concepts at their own pace.
