300 Million Citizens' Challenge
- India
- Nonprofit
Katha-300M addresses the critical issue of learning gaps among children, particularly in underserved and marginalized communities. Globally, and in India, hundreds of millions of children entrenched in a cycle of poverty are unable to read at grade level, impeding their social and economic development.
In India alone, approximately 47%, or 150 million children, cannot read at their grade level. The UNESCO estimate suggests that India may not achieve universal primary education until 2050, universal lower secondary education until 2060, and universal upper secondary education until 2085. This issue perpetuates a cycle of poverty, hindering children's ability to break free from socioeconomic constraints.
Factors contributing to this issue include inadequate access to quality educational materials and the inability to create and develop pedagogical approaches that create the joy of reading and learning in children at scale.
This becomes more critical as these children are first-generation learners with parents who may not help support their learning, let alone build the joy of reading. The lack of inclusive education frameworks, culturally relevant content, and insufficient support for children with learning differences perpetuate this situation.
Katha-300M's StoryPedagogy® (https://learn.katha.org/) is the platform that has child-centric content and facilitator led learning approach. It integrates the learning of key concepts, including FLN and academic requirements. This has been proven over the last 35 years in Katha Lab Schools and with our partnerships with governments on how StoryPedagogy directly addresses learning gaps by enhancing engagement and comprehension among learners, particularly in diverse linguistic and cultural settings. This approach is designed to scale, potentially significantly impacting global literacy rates and educational outcomes.
The 300 Million Citizens' Challenge builds on 35 years of Katha’s grassroots experience directly working with over 10 million children and bringing them out of the cycle of poverty. Katha is an internationally acclaimed publisher of culturally relevant and timeless children's books that develop big ideas like Gender, Earth, Equity, and Kindness. It has also significantly improved performance, Attention, and Retention in its children.
The 300M Citizen’s Challenge by Katha focuses on building alliances with grassroots organizations that serve as vital touchpoints for children. These include NGOs, community-based organizations, budget schools, community radio stations, women's empowerment groups, youth-led organizations, shelter homes, orphanages, and refugee camps. Leveraging Katha's 35+ years of experience and expertise, the initiative has developed a comprehensive Learning Management System (LMS) that hosts over 375 books in various formats, such as videos, games, and PDFs.
The platform is designed to be age-appropriate, allowing children to start with wordless books and progress through various levels, ultimately reaching books with 1200+ words. Inclusivity is a key focus, with the introduction of audio stories to support visually impaired children. The core strategy revolves around teaching and delivering topics through stories, a method proven to enhance Performance, Attention, and Retention (PAR) among learners.
The learn.katha.org platform (a published IEEE-Standards Association global case study) is a scalable and sustainable platform that builds on StoryPedagogy to build the joy of reading and, hence, learning outcomes among children. The child-centric content and facilitator-led learning approach uses a comprehensive Learning Management System (LMS) that delivers over 500+ courses in multiple formats, including digital books, audio stories, and interactive games. This content is curated to be culturally and linguistically inclusive, ensuring relevance and accessibility. The LMS is also accessible anytime, anywhere, on any device that helps reach remote locations with flaky internet and low-cost phones. Through story-based learning integration, Katha-300M improves Performance, Attendance, and Retention by 57%, 83%, and 97%, respectively. The rich illustrative with Active Story Based Learning [Think-Ask-Discuss-Act and Achive] fosters curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and compassion among young reader-leaders.
This platform supports child-centric, facilitator-led learning, and the approach involves extensive partnerships with grassroots organizations that reach children across 22 states and over 500 zip codes in India. This would address the needs of 90% of India’s population. Continuous and regular workshops and training for facilitators ensure the contextualized delivery of this content, making learning enjoyable and inclusive.
Facilitators are trained to deliver engaging and contextualized educational experiences using a vast library of over 500 books in various formats, including 220 audio stories for visually impaired learners. We also have audio lesson plans for visually challenged teachers. The initiative enhances foundational LSSRW skills (listening, speaking, storytelling, reading, and writing). It focuses on inclusivity and sustainability, impacting diverse groups such as delinquent children and dropouts and contributing to lifelong learning and community empowerment. The facilitators are also supported 24X7 via AI-based Chat Bot, WhatsApp, and Phone support.

The Katha-300 million Citizens' Challenge primarily serves underserved children, with teachers, childcare providers, mothers, and community workers facilitating. Katha's team of subject matter experts, pedagogy experts, and content experts conducts regular training, workshops, and support so that they can be both adopted and adapted towards innovative teaching practices that are contextual and sustainable.
The initiative addresses the S-P-I-C-E poverty in children: Social, Personal leadership, Intellectual, Cultural, and Environmental Awareness. By addressing these aspects, Katha believes that children can be lifted out of these poverties, reducing socio-economic poverties.
The impact of the 300 Million Citizens' Challenge is twofold.
- Firstly, it seeks to improve children's learning outcomes by vis Story Pedagogy that makes learning engaging with an interactive learning plan.
- Secondly, it aims to equip teachers or facilitators to build Me, Me+, and We Skills (c9) (Curiosity, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Competence, community, Citizenship) that contextualize subjects, topics, and themes according to their learning styles—whether audio, visual, experiential, or kinesthetic.
So, the solution comprehensively addresses these issues both directly and via facilitation by grassroots facilitators, community volunteers, teachers, childcare givers, and mothers. This approach enhances children's learning experiences and empowers facilitators to effectively support and facilitate their learning.
It thus helps build a free, fair, and fearless world for our children. achieving a sustainable and equitable future for all.

With its 35-year history in children's publishing and direct community involvement through Katha Lab School and other grassroots projects, Katha's team is well-positioned to execute the 300 Million Citizens' Challenge.
Katha's journey began as a publishing unit for children's books, and over the past 35 years, it has been dedicated to serving children through literature. Recognizing the widespread issue of children struggling with reading, especially in underserved communities, Katha took on the dual role of creating books for children and supporting them in learning to read. This commitment led to the establishment of Katha Lab School, which has operated for 33 years in one of Delhi's most underserved slums. The school serves as a laboratory for teaching and learning experiments, reflecting Katha's innovative approach to education.
From its extensive experience creating content for children and specifically for underserved communities, Katha has developed the 300 Million Citizens' Challenge. This initiative is a natural extension of Katha's work, leveraging its expertise in content creation, operational models, and effective teaching methods.
Additionally, Katha’s work has been embraced by state government schools, where it has been integrated into regular teaching methods. This acceptance and adoption by government schools are a testament to the effectiveness of Katha's approach, which has yielded remarkable results over the past decade.
The team behind Katha is deeply rooted in the communities it serves. Through Katha Lab School and other initiatives, the team has built strong relationships within these communities, gaining valuable insights and understanding of their needs. By aligning our strategic goals with the needs and aspirations of the communities, Katha ensures that the solutions we implement are sustainable and supportive of the communities' long-term educational advancement. This approach has strengthened community ties and ensured that our educational programs reflect and respond to the real needs of children and facilitators in these areas. This proximity to the communities allows the team to design and implement significant and impactful solutions.

In the Growth stage, 300M focuses on leveraging what we have to pivot around improvements and integrations based on the needs and challenges identified in the communities it serves—like shelter homes, orphanages, or blind schools. These integrations are designed to simplify the model for sustainability and are gradually applied across all alliance partnerships.
Example of pivoting the model to cater to Blind and Partially Blind Schools and Children via Voice Stories
300M recently curated audio stories for children. They have been made available as part of Alexa Skill and some podcast platforms to help in inclusive learning for visually challenged children.
Recognizing that some teachers and facilitators are visually impaired, we provided an end-to-end classroom experience, from voice lesson plans to audio stories. Teachers can now prompt a story through a voice-assistive device, and an exhaustive story-level guide is prepared for each story in both text and audio format. This guide includes topics, themes, ideas, and skills that can be learned through the story, as well as activities and assessments for the classroom.
In this process, we have built
- 200+ audio stories, with pre-context and integrated with post-story on ASBL (Active Story Based Learning Questions)
- Stories in English, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, and Sanskrit, thus helping in inclusive learning.
- Mentor Guides for sighted and non-sighted / partially sighted children.
- Audio Mentor Guides for non-sighted / partially-sighted teachers
We wish to broaden 300 M's impact beyond India and help children globally. While 300M has established traction and a good presence in India, it aims to leverage Solve's platform to reach a larger audience in need of content and knowledge.
We believe that addressing S-P-I-C-E poverty in children, Social, Personal leadership, Intellectual, Cultural, and Environmental Awareness, can be a global movement. Addressing the Big Ideas like Gende-Equity-Equalityand Kindness through stories and Stories, Pedagogy is not limited to India but is a global need.
We wish to see that no child is left behind and use stories as an integral part of child’s development. By expanding its reach to these global children, 300M hopes to provide them with the necessary content and learning resources to enhance their quality of life.
One specific area where SOLVE’s support would be invaluable is to see how we can make the joy of reading and storytelling a global habit and thus ‘detox children from the addictive device content while exploring the new developing stream of bibliotherapy and narrative therapy’ towards mental wellness, in addition, and specifically to help underserved children with the joy of reading and learning.
Additionally, Solve's network and resources can help 300M cross potential cultural and market-related challenges. Solve's partners can provide expertise, funding, and connections to help scale 300M's impact and reach more children in need globally.
Overall, 300M sees Solve as an opportunity to expand its reach and access the support and resources needed to overcome barriers and achieve its mission of providing inclusive and equitable learning opportunities for children worldwide.
At Katha, we believe together with SOLVE, via stories and creating a joy of learning, children across the world can be lifted out of SPICE and socio-economic poverties, thus achieving a more sustainable and equitable future for all and the solutions that help create a free, fair and fearless world.

At Katha-300M, our impact goals center on creating transformative educational changes by making learning more inclusive and equitable and improving outcomes for all learners. We strive to align our efforts with several UN Sustainable Development Goals: No Poverty (SDG 1), Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Climate Action (SDG 13). These goals steer all aspects of our operations and initiatives.
Measurement of Impact Goals:
We utilize leading and lagging indicators to measure our progress toward these goals. Our approach includes quantitative and qualitative engagements:
1. Quantitative Indicators:
- Reach and Engagement: We track the number of children who have reached the number of teachers and facilitators trained and the number of partnerships formed. The premise is straightforward: broader reach correlates with a more significant impact.
- Workshops and Participation Metrics: We measure the number of workshops held, the minutes of teacher participation, and overall engagement with our learning management system. These indicators help us gauge the effectiveness of our training and content delivery.
2. Qualitative Indicators:
- Training Quality and Content Relevance: We aim to enhance educators' capabilities through comprehensive training programs, multi-language content, workshops, and certifications. We continually assess the relevance and impact of our content on achieving big ideas, including the SDG goals.
- Stakeholder Feedback: Regular feedback from educators, caregivers, and community partners through interviews, surveys, and focus groups is vital. This feedback informs continuous improvement in our content and teaching methods, aligning them more closely with learner needs.
- We also have a RUCHI framework in our schools where we intervene directly. We measure LSSRW (Listen, Speak, Storytell, Read, and Write) for continuous improvement. This framework is being adapted and made available to the partners as well.
3. Ultimate Learning Outcomes:
- Performance, Attendance, and Retention: We consider a child’s performance in learning activities, consistent attendance, and retention in the educational system as crucial end metrics. These outcomes reflect the direct impact of our interventions on children’s educational stability and success.
Our progress measurement strategy is fairly scientific and robust. It integrates real-time data analysis from the portal with continuous community feedback to adapt and refine our engagement approaches. This iterative process ensures that we remain aligned with our mission to transform lives through education and effectively respond to the evolving needs of the communities we serve.
We are committed to a clear, evidence-based strategy for tracking and achieving impactful educational outcomes. By meticulously measuring both the reach of our programs and the qualitative improvements in teaching and learning, we are making strides toward a future where education is a universal bridge to opportunity and empowerment.
We use an anytime-anywhere-any device framework to augment reach and amplify the solution's impact. The core idea is to keep it light and simple for the user, with near-zero downloads. Since most users may not have low bandwidth, we have ensured the solutions work on browsers and any browser or device. This also means we have consciously avoided forcing app downloads, though the Moodle solution already has an app capability.
Our core technology is a Moodle-based Learning Management System (LMS) designed to provide content in diverse formats, such as video, games, and text. This flexibility supports various learning styles and addresses the individualized needs of learners, including those with disabilities.
Core Technologies Employed:
1. Learning Management System (LMS):
- A Moodle-based LMS is the backbone of our technological approach. It offers a versatile platform where content can be customized and adapted to suit individual learning styles and requirements.
- The LMS supports multimedia content, providing a rich and engaging educational experience. This includes interactive games that make learning fun and videos that provide visual and auditory information to aid understanding.
2. Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI):
Generative AI technology (Chatbase. co) integrates with our LMS to personalize learning experiences. By analyzing user data and behaviors, Gen AI helps deliver correct information to our facilitators (user) needs.
3. Accessibility Technologies:
We provide specialized solutions for disabled learners, on Alexa and podcasts for the visually impaired, ensuring that all children have equal access to our educational resources.
Alexa, voice stories, and podcasts create inclusive learning environments.
4. Digital Outreach and Communication Tools:
- We leverage platforms like WhatsApp, SMS, and email (via Mirabel Marketing and Salesforce) to communicate effectively and collaborate with our partners and facilitators. These tools ensure that our stakeholders are continually engaged and well-informed, facilitating smoother operation and implementation of our programs.
- YouTube serves as a valuable resource for disseminating training videos. These videos provide facilitators, educators, and community partners with accessible, engaging, and informative content, empowering them with the knowledge and skills to support children’s educational journeys.
The use of varied technologies without complicating things for the end user reflects a strategic and comprehensive approach to helping us reach the remotest parts. By combining modern digital tools with strategies that respect and include traditional learning via teachers, we believe we will cater to contextualized needs and preferences, maximizing outreach and impact.
This holistic use of technology aligns with our mission to make education more inclusive and equitable and significantly contributes to achieving multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Quality Education (SDG 4) and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10). Each technological choice and integration is guided by our commitment to creating a lasting impact on the communities we serve, ensuring every child can learn, grow, and succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Katha, including 300M, has a total of 60 full-time employees and 60 contractors. The 300M team specifically has 2 full-time employees, 3 contractors, 4 part-time employees, and 4 vendor resources.
Our team has been working on the solution for about than three years since its launch in December 2020.
Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is embedded in every layer of our organizational practices.
Recognizing that diverse teams are more innovative and effective, we have implemented several policies and practices to ensure that our team reflects the communities we serve and upholds principles of equity and inclusion.
Diversity in Our Team:
- Our leadership and staff composition reflects our commitment to diversity: Our Founder and the Executive Director are women, and 40% of our governing council are women.
- Over 70% of our team members in schools are women, many of whom are from local communities and underserved areas, including slums. This representation is crucial as it brings unique perspectives and understandings of the challenges faced by the communities we aim to uplift.
- We hire from various socioeconomic backgrounds and varied geographical regions ranging from remote fishing villages to major urban centers. This geographic and socioeconomic diversity enriches our team’s approach to creating educational solutions that are culturally relevant and broadly accessible.
Equity in Opportunities:
- Equity for us means more than just equality; it's about adjusting the system to recognize and address historical and systemic barriers. Our recruitment and employment policies are designed to provide equitable access to opportunities:
- We actively recruit those who have left the workforce due to childbirth or caregiving responsibilities, offering part-time roles and flexible working arrangements to support their re-entry into the workforce.
- Our liberal leave policy, which includes extended maternity leave and medical and family care accommodations, ensures that all team members can manage their personal and professional responsibilities without compromising their career progression.
- We believe in hiring for strengths rather than conventional qualifications; we open doors for talented individuals who may not have traditional educational backgrounds but possess the skills and drive necessary for success.
Inclusivity in Our Environment:
- Inclusion at Katha-300M is about creating an environment where all employees feel welcomed, respected, and valued:
- Our policies actively promote respect for all religions, languages, abilities, and special needs, ensuring every team member feels secure and valued in their identity.
- We foster an inclusive culture where feedback from all levels of staff is encouraged and valued, contributing to continuous improvement in our DEI practices.
In addition to the curriculum for children that focuses on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we have regular training sessions on DEI topics and have open discussions with the team on unconscious biases, cultural competence, and strategies for fostering an inclusive workplace.
We operate under a nonprofit business model, adhering strictly to the regulations governing nonprofits in our country. This model allows us to focus primarily on maximizing social impact rather than generating profit while ensuring financial sustainability through multiple revenue streams.
Revenue Generation:
1. Publishing High-Quality Educational Books:
As a publisher, we produce high-quality books to enrich children's reading experiences and create the joy of reading.
These books are also sold through various online platforms and distributors that go into retail buyers and are purchased by for-profit schools and libraries.
The revenue generated from these sales is reinvested into our programs, supporting our mission to enhance literacy and provide quality education to underprivileged children.
2. Grants and Philanthropic Funding:
Grants are the cornerstone of our funding strategy. We receive substantial support from foundations, corporate grants, and philanthropies that value and recognize the impact of our work. These funds are typically allocated towards specific projects or general operational support, enabling us to deliver our programs and scale our impact.
We are primarily funded by corporate grants and philanthropic contributions, particularly those earmarked for corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This funding is often tied to demonstrable impact, requiring us to maintain transparency and show tangible results from our interventions.
3. Planned Expansion to Monetize Educational Content:
We are exploring opportunities to monetize our educational courses and content for for-profit institutions. This initiative is in the early stages but represents a potential avenue for diversifying our income and expanding our reach to include paying clients while focusing on our primary mission.
Value Proposition:
Our products and services are designed to meet the critical needs of our beneficiaries:
- For underserved children: We provide them access to quality reading books and innovative learning solutions that are otherwise unavailable to them. Our programs are tailored to improve literacy rates and promote inclusive education, directly impacting their ability to succeed academically and beyond.
- For Donors and Partners: We offer a transparent, impact-driven opportunity to fulfill CSR objectives and engage in meaningful philanthropy. Our partners are integral to our mission, and we ensure they are well-informed of the outcomes and successes their contributions help achieve.
Operational Approach:
We deliver our services through direct interventions, collaborations with schools and NGOs, and leveraging technology to reach a wider audience. Our approach ensures that resources are used efficiently and that the benefits of our programs are maximized for the children we serve.
300M's business model is structured around sustainable revenue generation that supports our social objectives. By selling books and products, securing grants, and exploring new revenue channels, we sustain and scale our impact while maintaining our commitment to the communities we serve.
- Organizations (B2B)
