Ethio-kiwi children learning program
- New Zealand
- Nonprofit
Refugee and immigrant children, particularly those from Ethiopia, face significant challenges when it comes to education and social integration in Auckland, New Zealand, where "Shager Ethiopian Entertainment NZ Inc." operates. Many of these children arrive with limited English proficiency and struggle to adapt to a new culture, leading to feelings of isolation and inadequacy. Globally, the number of forcibly displaced individuals, including children, continues to rise, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue.
The primary obstacles these children face include language barriers, cultural differences, and the trauma of displacement. These factors contribute to their academic struggles and hinder their ability to form connections with their peers and the broader community. Discrimination and stigma further exacerbate their sense of exclusion and alienation.
Our organization aims to tackle these challenges through after-school and holiday programs staffed by volunteers and tutors. These programs provide academic support in subjects like Mathematics and English, as well as opportunities for social-emotional learning and problem-solving techniques. By creating a nurturing and inclusive environment, the organization seeks to build confidence and resilience among these children while fostering connections with the wider community.
Our program offers a safe and supportive environment where these children can receive academic assistance, engage in enriching activities, and form meaningful connections with their peers and the wider community. We use traditional teaching methods supplemented by interactive learning materials and resources to make learning engaging and accessible.
Our volunteers and tutors are carefully selected and trained to meet the diverse needs of the children we serve, providing individualized attention and support where needed. By providing them with the support and resources they need to succeed academically and socially, we empower them to pursue higher education and gain access to better employment opportunities in the future. This, in turn, increases their earning potential and economic stability, thereby lifting them out of poverty and improving their overall quality of life. By addressing the root causes of poverty through education and social inclusion, we lay the foundation for long-term positive change within the Ethiopian immigrant community in Auckland, which will ultimately contribute to broader efforts to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable development.
Currently, these children are underserved in several ways. Many struggle to access quality education due to language barriers and a lack of support services tailored to their needs. Additionally, they may face discrimination and social isolation, which can further hinder their integration into their new community. Without adequate support, these children may struggle academically and socially, impacting their long-term prospects and well-being.
Our solution aims to address these needs by providing a comprehensive educational and social integration program specifically tailored to the unique challenges faced by refugee and immigrant children from Ethiopia. In our holiday program, we organize sightseeing trips around Auckland, New Zealand, to provide refugee and immigrant children from Ethiopia with enriching experiences. These outings expose them to the cultural heritage of their new country, facilitate community engagement, and offer practical opportunities to practice English language skills. Additionally, these trips foster social interaction, personal growth, and a sense of belonging among the children. By offering diverse experiences beyond the classroom, our program aims to empower these children to embrace their new environment and build connections with their community while having fun and learning along the way.
Our Team Leads and volunteers are representative of these communities, who are themselves black, sharing common cultural backgrounds, languages, and experiences with the children we serve. Being Black themselves, they share common experiences of cultural identity, discrimination, and resilience. Due to this, our interactions with the children are grounded in empathy, understanding, and mutual respect. Moreover, our team actively seeks input, ideas, and feedback from community members through regular consultations, meetings, and engagement activities.
The design and implementation of our solution are meaningfully guided by the input and agendas of the communities we serve. As such, we work closely with community leaders, parents, and stakeholders to co-create programs that are relevant, inclusive, and sustainable. By centering the voices and priorities of the community in our work, we ensure that our solution is not only effective but also reflective of the cultural richness and diversity of the Ethiopian diaspora in Auckland.

- Pilot
We selected "Pilot" as the stage of development for our solution because we have already launched our educational and social integration programs for refugee and immigrant children from Ethiopia in Auckland. While our programs are still iterating on design and implementation, they are actively serving the community and making a tangible impact on the lives of the children we support. We have successfully initiated partnerships with local organizations and stakeholders, secured resources and funding to support our activities, and begun to establish a presence within the community. However, we recognize that there is still room for refinement and improvement as we continue to gather feedback, measure outcomes, and iterate on our approach. Therefore, we consider our solution to be in the "Pilot" stage as we work towards further refining and scaling our programs to reach more communities and make an even greater impact in the future.
One key barrier we face is financial constraints. Securing funding to sustain and scale our programs is crucial for their long-term success and effectiveness. Solve can help us overcome this by providing valuable expertise and guidance on financial management, and sustainability planning. Moreover, Technical and operational challenges also present barriers to our solution's growth and impact. As we continue to refine and expand our programs, we may encounter technical obstacles or require specialized expertise in areas such as program evaluation, data analysis, or technology integration. Solve can help us overcome these barriers by connecting us with relevant experts, advisors, and resources who can offer guidance and support in navigating these challenges effectively.
- Monitoring & Evaluation (e.g. collecting/using data, measuring impact)
One unique aspect of our solution is our focus on leveraging the power of storytelling and creative expression to support the educational and social integration of refugee and immigrant children from Ethiopia in Auckland. Through storytelling workshops, creative arts activities, and digital storytelling projects, we provide children with a platform to share their personal experiences, dreams, and aspirations in a supportive and empowering environment.Furthermore, these storytelling projects have the potential to catalyze broader positive impacts by raising awareness about the experiences and challenges faced by refugee and immigrant children and advocating for their rights and needs. By amplifying their voices and stories, we can inspire empathy, compassion, and action among stakeholders, and the general public, ultimately driving positive change and creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
We believe our solution will have a meaningful impact on the challenges faced by refugee and immigrant children from Ethiopia in Auckland because it provides them with the support, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed academically and socially. By offering after-school and holiday programs that focus on tutoring, social-emotional learning, cultural enrichment, and community engagement, we create a nurturing environment where these children can thrive. Through these activities, we aim to boost their academic performance, improve their language skills, build their confidence, and foster a sense of belonging within their new community. By addressing these key areas, we expect our solution to empower these children to overcome the obstacles they face and unlock their full potential, setting them on a path toward success and integration in their new home.
1. Improve Academic Performance: Our goal is to enhance the academic performance of children by providing tailored tutoring and educational support, measured by improvements in grades, test scores, and classroom participation.
2. Enhance Language Proficiency: We seek to improve the English language proficiency of children, measured by assessments of speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
3. Remove Poverty: Additionally, we aim to contribute to poverty reduction within the refugee and immigrant communities we serve. By providing children with access to quality education, social integration, and overall well-being support, we aspire to break the cycle of poverty. We measure our progress through indicators such as improvements in household income, stable housing access, and participation in vocational training or employment among parents or guardians.
To measure our progress towards these impact goals, we collect and analyze a variety of quantitative and qualitative data, including:
- Pre- and post-program assessments of academic performance and English language proficiency.
- Surveys and interviews with children, parents, and educators to gather feedback on social integration, confidence, and well-being.
- Attendance records and participation rates in program activities and community events.
- Observations and anecdotal evidence of changes in behavior, attitudes, and relationships.
At the core of our technology is a program management system, powered by a cloud-based software like Microsoft Teams which allows us to efficiently schedule and coordinate tutoring sessions, workshops, and outings. We also utilize communication tools such as WhatsApp or Slack to keep volunteers, tutors, and stakeholders engaged and informed. Additionally, we incorporate data collection and analysis features through SurveyMonkey to gather feedback and improvement-related areas from parents as well as other community members. This integrated technology approach enables us to optimize program delivery, foster communication and collaboration, and drive data-driven decision-making swiftly.
