In the context of the refugee crisis, when entire families are forced to flee from their homes due to conflict, violence, war and persecution, access to early childhood education can be a lifeline. What if the needs of the child who has fled conflict were to be met with early learning opportunities that resemble what they’ve lost?
War at the doorsteps: forced to flee or die. A child leaves with her family with nothing more than she can carry. But it’s not just material goods that she leaves behind, it is her right and access to education as well. Unfortunately, millions of refugee children have no choice but to flee, forced out of their homes by conflict and climate crises. With escalating and unprecedented levels of global displacement, a record 100 million people are presently displaced across the globe, and more than 222 million children are deprived of learning during the early years – the most critical for development.
Take Uganda, for instance, the largest refugee hosting country in Africa, harboring over 1.4 million displaced people. Shockingly, only 1/10th of children aged 3-5 access formal pre-primary education, mostly in urban, privately funded settings. Early childhood education is not just about ABCs and 123s; it's about providing a safe-haven where young minds can thrive despite the chaos, laying a foundation for lifelong learning. It's about nurturing their innate curiosity, creativity, and resilience, giving them the tools they need to succeed in the face of adversity.
During the critical early years of a child's life, our brain is like a sponge, soaking up knowledge and experiences that shape our future trajectory. Yet, for far too many refugee children, this developmental window is overshadowed by displacement and uncertainty. Without access to quality early childhood education, they are denied the opportunity to build a strong foundation for learning and development, putting them at a disadvantage that can have lifelong consequences. But the importance of early childhood education extends beyond individual children; it has the power to transform entire communities and societies. By investing in the youngest members of displaced populations, we're not just giving them a chance at a brighter future; we're also building resilience, fostering social cohesion, and laying the groundwork for long-term peace and stability.
In a world scarred by conflict and displacement, the SHINE solution is a catalyst for change, addressing the dire lack of quality early childhood education in refugee camps. Illuminated by imagination and enthusiasm, at the age of 6, I began imagining a school specifically designed for children affected by war. Showcasing the immense potential of young minds to drive change, I launched this youth-led initiative that is empowering children, caregivers, and teachers in conflict zones through play-based learning. It capitalizes on the innate value of early education and has the potential to revolutionize ECD on the front lines of emergencies. By ensuring that every refugee child has access to quality early childhood education, we're not just changing lives; we're shaping the future of our world.
With the SHINE solution, we're revolutionizing access to quality early childhood education in conflict zones. Our flat-pack pop-up classrooms can be assembled in minutes, empowering children to take charge of their learning environment. Designed with the help of an architect, these flexible spaces offer the freedom to deploy a learning environment anywhere, anytime. But that's just the beginning. We're bridging the digital divide with low-cost, low-tech solutions like the Raspberry Pi computer coupled with the Offline Kolibri Learning Platform (through Learning Equality), providing access to over 6 million digital resources in multiple languages. This initiative is critical, considering over 4 billion people lack internet access.
Our approach doesn't stop at physical and digital infrastructure. Beginning with the child-centered Montessori-inspired preschool program, the SHINE solution provides access to play-based early learning opportunities for young children to develop practical life skills such as coordination, fine and large motor skills, social skills, through our open-sourced EmpowerED program. Using an intergenerational approach that fosters community engagement, culturally relevant workshops target parents, caregivers, and aspiring teachers to raise awareness about the importance of early learning and stimulation for young children. These workshops cover a range of topics from the theory of play-based learning to social-emotional development, and local toy making to encourage the creation of safe and stimulating learning environments. By demonstrating the importance of early learning through play and offering tangible ways parents and caregivers can create their own learning materials, we can help transition from a rote teaching method to a child-centered play-based facilitation approach.
We've developed a holistic early childhood education program rooted in equity and inclusion. EmpowerED is our open-sourced Montessori inspired Early Childhood Development (ECD) curriculum that focuses on whole-child development in low-resource settings. Through play-based learning and locally sourced material creation, we're improving focus, coordination, and mental health while celebrating diversity and cultural relevance. We're not just providing resources; we're building capacity. Our teacher training program equips caregivers, and teachers with the skills and knowledge to create respectful, inclusive classrooms that nurture children's development.
By utilizing stories and storytelling to convey the messages of the importance of play, and engaging the community in the production of local and age-appropriate learning materials, we have had a high level of adoption.
Through small, easy-to-digest modules, this program scaffolds information, increasing access to quality early childhood education while simultaneously training teachers and on the Montessori methodology and the numerous ways to support early learning in conflict zones. In the data analyzed from the first round of ASQ-3 (Ages and Stages Questionnaires), we found a positive reduction in children’s stress levels, as well as positive impacts on improved caregiver-child relationships and increased social cohesion.
This youth-led initiative is driven by a commitment to creating a brighter future for generations to come. By empowering communities with the tools and knowledge they need to support early childhood development, we're illuminating the path to resilience, opportunity, and peace.
The SHINE solution primarily serves children, caregivers, and teachers in conflict zones or emergencies, aiming to directly and meaningfully improve their lives through quality early childhood education. We target three groups of recipients- caregivers, parents, and children this way the effects will be greater and the ECD interventions more highly adopted. The target population includes:
- Children: The solution targets young children aged 2.5-6, particularly those in conflict zones who are currently underserved in terms of access to education. These children often face disruptions to their learning due to displacement, lack of resources, and trauma from conflict. The SHINE solution provides them with safe, nurturing learning environments where they can develop essential skills and knowledge crucial for their future success.
- Caregivers: Caregivers, including parents and community members, play a vital role in children's early development. However, they often lack the resources, knowledge, and support to provide quality early learning experiences, especially in conflict-affected areas. The SHINE solution offers training programs and workshops for caregivers, empowering them to create stimulating learning environments at home and in their communities. By equipping caregivers with the tools and knowledge they need, the solution strengthens caregiver-child relationships and fosters positive child development outcomes.
- Teachers: Teachers in conflict zones often face numerous challenges, including limited resources, training, and support systems. The offline EmpowerED training material provides comprehensive a teacher training program that focus on child-centered pedagogies, trauma-informed practices, and culturally relevant approaches to teaching and learning. By enhancing the capacity of teachers, the solution ensures that they can effectively support children's holistic development and well-being in challenging environments. Ultimately we hope to offer micro-credentialing throughout the teacher training, so as people move on from conflict zones or refugee camps, they are able to utilize the skills learned and seek employment as Certified Primary Teachers.
The SHINE solution addresses the needs of these populations by:
- Providing access to quality early childhood education: Through innovative approaches such as flat-pack pop-up classrooms and low-cost digital learning solutions, the solution expands access to early learning opportunities for children in conflict zones.
- Empowering caregivers: By offering training programs and workshops, the solution empowers caregivers to create supportive learning environments and engage in meaningful interactions with children, promoting their overall development.
- Building capacity among teachers: Through comprehensive teacher training programs, the solution enhances the skills and knowledge of teachers, enabling them to provide high-quality early childhood education and support the unique needs of children in conflict-affected areas.
Overall, the SHINE solution seeks to directly and meaningfully improve the lives of children, caregivers, and teachers in conflict zones by addressing the barriers to quality early childhood education and fostering positive development outcomes for all.
My team is uniquely positioned to deliver the SHINE solution to the target population in conflict zones. As the founder and leader of this initiative, I bring a personal passion and commitment to improving the lives of children affected by conflict. My own experiences and background serve as a driving force behind this project, demonstrating that age is not a barrier to creating meaningful change. I am OBSESSED with the potential of my generation, and I believe that with strategic support, we can ensure no child is left behind.
But I am not alone in this endeavor. Our team comprises individuals with diverse expertise and lived experience, ensuring that we are well-equipped to design and deliver a solution that is responsive to the needs of the communities we serve. For example, we have access and strong relationships with AMI Montessori trainers who provide valuable insights into pedagogical approaches, as well as my friend and business partner Oliver, who brings firsthand experience of living in a refugee camp and understanding the challenges faced by children and caregivers in such settings.
Importantly, my team is representative of the communities we serve. I engage regularly with high-level dialogues at organizations like the United Nations, UNICEF, and Education Cannot Wait, ensuring that we accurately understand the dire needs of children on the front lines. Moreover, our solution is meaningfully guided by community input, ideas, and agendas. We prioritize community engagement and co-design processes, ensuring that the voices of children, caregivers, and teachers are heard and valued throughout the design and implementation of our programs.
My youth and leadership position within this initiative also offer unique advantages. As a child leading an initiative to help other children, our campaign can be marketed in a way that resonates deeply with our target audience. My voice serves as a powerful advocacy tool, amplifying the importance of early childhood education and highlighting the potential of youth leadership in driving social change. You are never too young to change the world, and the impact I have already made is proof of that.
Our team's collective expertise, lived experience, and commitment to community engagement position us as the right people to design and deliver the SHINE solution to the target population in conflict zones. The SHINE solution has been empowering learners on the ground since October 2021. Launched in the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement in Uganda, we have been thrilled with the positive outcomes and lessons learned so far. With over 3,000 learners impacted so far, we are excited to continue improving our solution and grow our impacts.
I'm applying to SOLVE because I believe in the transformative power of the SHINE solution and its potential to ensure no child is left behind in accessing quality early childhood education, especially in conflict zones. While financial support is crucial for scaling this initiative, it's not the sole reason for my application.
Despite raising over $92,000 through LemonAID stands, (84 LemonAID stands to be exact), I recognize the need for additional resources and expertise to overcome various barriers. These include financial, technical, legal, cultural, and market challenges. With SOLVE's help, I aim to address these barriers by connecting with partners who can provide both monetary and non-monetary support.
One of my goals is to integrate the SHINE solution into existing early childhood development (ECD) response programs, ensuring its sustainability and scalability. Additionally, I hope to explore opportunities for micro-credentialing and certifying teachers in conflict zones, offering income-generating opportunities and further empowering communities.
I'm eager to collaborate with industry experts to ensure that every aspect of the SHINE solution is culturally relevant and responsive to the communities it serves. This includes data recording, assessment methods, pilot location research, and more.
Additionally, the CEO of the organization is deeply involved in all aspects of the project, and our program partners on the ground are eager to absorb knowledge and expertise from SOLVE and its network.
While at 10 years old, I may not fit the typical profile of an applicant, I assure you of my professionalism and determination. Whether it's delivering keynote speeches or participating in high-level meetings at the United Nations, I am committed to changing the world, and I hope SOLVE will join me on this journey.

The journey of the SHINE solution began in 2019 when ( at the age of 6), I transformed a warehouse into a school for refugee children, right across from the Moria Refugee Camp. This groundbreaking initiative laid the foundation for what would become the SHINE box prototype, which has been deployed on the ground in Uganda since October 2021.
Since then, our dedicated team in Uganda has been leading the charge, revolutionizing early childhood education in the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement. They are at the forefront of our mission, bringing innovative solutions and hope to children and families in need.
At Paisley’s Pals, diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords; they are core values that guide everything we do. Our team is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where all team members can thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances.
First and foremost, our leadership team reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. With a Founder under the age of 11, we challenge traditional notions of leadership and bring a fresh perspective to the table.
Additionally, our team effort is led by refugees currently living in a displacement camp. To achieve financial sustainability, our plan encompasses a combination of fundraising efforts, grant applications, and strategic partnerships. Here's how we intend to fund our work and evidence of our progress so far:
Fundraising Efforts: We will continue to leverage fundraising activities, such as lemonade stands, crowdfunding campaigns, and community events, to raise awareness and generate revenue for our programs. These efforts will involve engaging with individual donors, corporate sponsors, and community organizations to secure financial support.
- Evidence of Success: Our Founder and Chief Ideas Officer has already organized over 84 lemonade stands, raising nearly $100,000. These grassroots fundraising efforts demonstrate our ability to mobilize community support and generate revenue for our cause.
Grant Applications: We are actively pursuing grant opportunities from foundations, governmental agencies, and international organizations that support initiatives in education, conflict resolution, and humanitarian aid. By submitting well-crafted grant proposals aligned with our mission and objectives, we aim to secure funding to sustain and expand our programs.
- Evidence of Success: Recent meetings with organizations such as Education Cannot Wait and Save the Children have been instrumental in aligning our initiatives with the Education in Emergencies framework. These engagements position us favorably to apply for grants and funding opportunities in the near future.
Strategic Partnerships: We seek to establish partnerships with Ministries of Education, NGOs, and other stakeholders in the education sector to access funding opportunities and enhance the scalability and impact of our programs. By aligning our objectives with national education frameworks and emergency response plans, we can leverage existing resources and infrastructure to maximize our reach and effectiveness.
- Evidence of Success: By forging partnerships with Ministries of Education, we can tap into funding opportunities earmarked for early childhood education and emergency response initiatives. These partnerships not only provide financial support but also enhance the sustainability and long-term impact of our programs.
Through a diversified approach to fundraising, grant applications, and strategic partnerships, we aim to achieve financial sustainability while advancing our mission of transforming early childhood learning in conflict zones. While I am sure not many other solutions rely on the effectiveness of LemonAID stands to raise money, it is proof that anything is possible and that we are committed to securing the resources needed to sustain and scale our impact in the future.
