In Dzaleka refugee camp, many children do not have access to education or the level of English necessary to succeed in Malawian primary and secondary school curriculum. Implementing partners tasked with providing education to refugees in Dzaleka have not been able to meet the needs of the community due to limited resources. As such, it is up to community based organizations such as ours to fill the gaps and meet the needs of the children in our community
Likewise,
In the Dzaleka refugee camp, there are many out school girls who do not have access to education; mainly the new arrivals girls who arrived since 2018. In other saying, many aged schoolgirls are out of school in the community and due to this, they face violations of their rights in the community.
The future of girls in Dzaleka is uncertain. Not all girl’s complete primary or secondary school due to the nature and demands of camp life. The majority of those who succeed at secondary can’t go forward with higher education and are often left idle without employment opportunities. THE PROBLEM THAT NEEDS CHANGE

Facing multiple issues in a dense and multicultural environment, girls are often left in a mind-set of helplessness. Lack of employment and educational opportunities create uncertainty of future that lead girls into poverty, early pregnancy and marriage, and low participation in the decision making on issues concerning their lives.
CAUSE FACTORS
There are inadequate resources and the financial possibility to support carrying out these activities effectively by the implementing partners in place. In like manner, most of these girls are living without parental care and others belong to poor families that cannot afford to pay school fees for them at private schools.
LONG-TERM BAD CONSEQUENCES
The fact of not having access to education for some children in the community is leading them to serious risks like;
Child marriage & sexual intercourse,
Child labor
We have been running the English as Foreign Language Program in the Dzaleka refugee camp since September 2017, using Jesuit Refugee Service- Professional & Post-secondary (PPSE) Malawi Curriculum. These classes have been attended by over 1200 children and youth from Dzaleka with eight classes.
As the outcome of this program so far, 850 graduates from our classes went to access formal education programs around the camp including, Secondary School, Post-Secondary Education Programs, Professional Certificates, and Diploma Programs. Likewise, they can do jobs that require their English language skills so that, they can sustain their livelihood in the refugee camp.
We continue implementing these activities to increase the intellectual capacity of children and youth within Dzeleka. Our goal is to allow new arrival children and youth to start seeing connections they did not know before, and eventually be able to engage in camp activities and educational opportunities that require them to speak English
Impact of this work in the community
1) Children will be enrolled in the formal learning programs operating within the community without language barriers.
2) Children & youth will be enhanced with effective skills that will lead them to good orientation focused on achieving their goals and objectives and gain realistic ideas on what it means to be responsible citizens.
In addition,
We will be embarking on 12 months of HAIRDRESSING & to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of out of school girls in Dzaleka Refugee Camp. We planned to carry out these activities in the community because, there are difficulties that refugee girls’ children are encountering such as early marriage, rape, abduction, sexual violence, and poverty.
Detailed Information of Activities included:
We will be teaching using technology that includes but is not limited to, online learning platforms, digitalization, multimedia devices, mobile phones, learning apps, flashcards, audio/visual multimedia content (like podcasts and videos), EdTech solutions, and social media which can facilitate faster and more comprehensive language progression. For example, the application of multimedia content in class could integrate print texts, video, learning games, and the internet to familiarize students with language vocabulary and structure or let them practice pronunciation and speaking with native speakers.
Displaying video clips for students could provide detailed guidelines that show how to move their tongue and jaw in the right way to produce a certain sound. Speech recognition technology will help students correctly pronounce common words and phrases and they will receive targeted feedback and scoring to get the sounds just right
Lastly, Children will improve their listening, reading and writing skills through media and internet. By knowing the English language through the internet, and cable TV, young learners will experience the real value of English in their life. Technology create real and enjoyable atmosphere for young language learners and increase their language awareness when it is used correctly. Technology also will allow young language learners gain language skills outside the classroom when they interact actively. Right and proper use of the new technologies enhance the fruitful learning of the language.
CRS will implement the following activities in order to meet the objectivesTHEATER:
A way to both teach and engage the children in learning, helping them to improve their proficiency in the language through fun and interactive activities. Through theater, the children can learn to express themselves confidently, develop their communication skills, and learn new vocabulary and expressions. The theater activity may involve the children acting out various short skits and plays in English, using common phrases and expressions that are typically used in daily conversations.
- SINGING: Another fun and interactive way to teach English as a foreign language to children in the camp is through singing. Children can learn popular English nursery rhymes, pop songs, and other songs that are simple and easy to learn.
- POETRY: A way to teach them grammar, rhyming, and basic sentence structure principles. The children can be taught simple poems that rhyme and have repetitive phrases, making it easier for them to memorize.
GAME: Incorporating games into the learning process is essential for helping children learn languages better, especially in cases where the language being taught is too complex for them
We plan to show that the project Objectives have been met? What monitoring tools will you use?
