Climate change requires reducing carbon emissions, which is why a circular economy that reduces the constant production of single-use glass bottles and stop using PET by returning to the use of REUTILIZABLE glass bottles is indispensable. Our enterprise proposes to reuse all glass containers (bottles), rescuing them from consumption points such as restaurants, bars, pubs, houses and buildings. Sanitizing and re-entering the market as many times as possible. This will notably reduce the carbon generation of the ovens produced by the millions of bottles that are used daily and will decrease the waste of the natural resources involved in their production and we will reduce the use of disposable PET bottles, which today most of them end up contaminating our oceans. And we will do it by giving work to people in a situation of disability for their labor inclusion
At present, Chile generates around 750 thousand tons of glass per year. 500 million of these 80% glass containers arrive every year at landfills. And it is expected that by 2020 we will surpass one million tons. The 20% of this glass, which is recycled, is mixed with new material for year after year to increase this figure. The most serious thing is that this recycling involves crushing containers that in their great majority are in perfect conditions with a single use. Spend energy and resources to melt this material in order to re-manufacture the same containers that were broken. In the world it exceeds 305 billion bottles per year. According to Coca Cola, reusing a container equals the CO2 absorption of a tree in a day. We know that we will not be able to rescue 100% of the containers but if we reuse 50% of the glass bottles in Chile it would be equivalent to the consumption of a forest of 685 thousand trees during a year helping the whole world. If we also manage to replace single use PET bottles, the figure increases exponentially due to the consumption of 1 million of these bottles per minute
We currently work with a small group of young people with intellectual disabilities (approximately 20) washing containers for small entrepreneurs who recognize the social and environmental value of our work. These young people seek to join the world of work because 70% of them do not have paid work. We work within a training center for young people between 18 and 26 years old together with professionals in charge of developing methodologies that provide work skills for their future. Our customers are mainly craft beer bottlers, distilled and other fermented. but we want to expand our market to medium and large bottlers, especially wine.
The containers (bottles) of discarded glass of bars, restaurants, hotels and buildings will be rescued to wash them very well and to reintegrate them to the market selling them to MiPYMES bottling of all type and big bottlers. Preventing them from reaching landfills. All this will be done with young people and adults in a situation of disability, creating with this a work source for this group that represents 12% of the population and that has 70% unemployment rates.
Our project solves the problems of both labor inclusion in the territory and the growing and important problem of waste in it. This, since currently the alternatives of labor inclusion for young people and adults are scarce and in tasks little recognized by society. Even more because it is a vulnerable commune. Our solution, in addition to providing a source of remunerated work, intelligently solves a need that more and more bottling companies at the national level seek to solve. That of linking with environmental and social causes to captivate their final clients. If we add the fulfillment of the goals of the Recycling Law, our alternative covers more efficiently these three needs for the bottling companies and the employees served.
We will use water filtering technology, solar heaters, electric vehicles and experiment with ozone sterilization
- Increase production of renewable and recyclable raw materials for products and packaging
- Prototype
- New business model or process
Currently no one reuses glass bottles seriously, in large volumes or for all bottling industries. Even more expensive and sophisticated materials are sought to avoid contamination or doing little thinking that the recyclable is the solution. The innovative aspect of our proposal is to make something evident (wash), throughout the country, for all bottlers, aligned with the circular economy, giving work to people with disabilities, thereby helping the environment and people who deserve an opportunity to integrate. Our solution, wash to reuse, was used from the origin of the pottery, today known as "returnable containers" was hardly used in the '80s, to go to the so-called "disposable" glass bottles or changing the PET plastic containers. Today this can not continue to happen due to environmental damage and the accumulated waste from this change. Even more so because the end customer prefers companies that avoid this damage or repair it. This is how brands appear that seek to reduce their footprint to the maximum without altering their product by appealing to recycling. Our proposal is more intelligent, sustainable and innovative and the end customer can easily realize it.
