Imagine a future where Black and African learners are facing a 10-30% achievement gap when compared their peers, a world where African learners in Grade 8 lack basic and numeracy skills required for Grade 4 learners. By 2050 more than one-third of the world's young people will live in Africa. Currently the jobs do not exist in Africa to be able to sustain this population of young people.
Moreso, Africa and the world will be facing uncertain times with new industry like AI poised to become leaders in the global market. Equally, Global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are projected to increase by 50%. The atmospheric concentration of GHGs could reach 685 parts per million (ppm) CO2- equivalents by 2050. While far from the only examples of how dramatically different the world will look in 2050, the consistent thread is that a new generation of leaders must prepared to address new realities.
In order to economically sustain this rising population, this next generation of students will need to be prepared with knowledge, skills and mindsets that allow them to innovate new frontiers and economic solutions. However, the skills that students will need to innovate and lead are not widely taught in the African education systems making this next generation of students overall grossly underprepared for this future.
In addressing the pressing challenges facing African learners, particularly the alarming achievement gap and deficiencies in basic skills, it's imperative to revolutionize education for the 21st century. Recognizing the diversity of each child's learning journey, we advocate for a tailored educational paradigm that combines structure with adaptability.
To meet this need, we have developed an inclusive digital learning platform tailored for K-12 learners. Our platform offers a comprehensive suite of resources, including curriculum-aligned animated lessons, an AI learning companion, digital textbooks, assessments, and virtual tutors. This approach ensures that learners can engage with educational content in a manner that resonates with their unique learning styles and preferences. By providing a structured yet customizable learning experience, we aim to equip the next generation of leaders with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to navigate the evolving landscape of the 21st century, fostering innovation and economic sustainability in Africa and beyond.
In Kenya, as in many other regions, 70% of the 12 million K-12 students are missing out on the digital revolution due to limited access to the internet. This staggering statistic underscores a significant gap in the educational landscape, where a large portion of students is unable to fully participate in the benefits that digital technology can offer.
Without access to the internet, Kenyan students face numerous challenges in their educational journey. They are unable to leverage online resources, access educational platforms, or engage in digital learning experiences that could enhance their academic performance and broaden their horizons. In a world increasingly driven by digital innovation, this lack of connectivity puts these students at a disadvantage, hindering their ability to develop essential digital literacy skills and adapt to the evolving demands of the modern workforce.
Our solution aims to directly and meaningfully improve the lives of these students in several ways:
Access to Quality Education: Many students, especially those in underserved communities in Kenya, lack access to quality education resources. Our platform provides them with access to a secure digital learning environment where they can engage with interactive lessons, e-books, assessments, and certified virtual private tutors. Additionally, our innovative offline nano-servers, known as Portable Local Network Servers (PLNS), address the challenge of internet connectivity, which is particularly relevant in areas with limited internet access in Kenya.
Representation and Inclusivity: Traditional educational curricula in Kenya often lack representation of diverse cultures, including Black cultures and themes. Our solution addresses this by celebrating and embracing Black cultures and themes, ensuring that Kenyan students see themselves reflected in their learning materials. By incorporating diverse perspectives and experiences into the curriculum, we foster inclusivity, cultural appreciation, and a deeper understanding of the world.
Safety and Security: In Kenya, as in other regions, ensuring the safety and security of students online is paramount. Our platform prioritizes the well-being of Kenyan learners by providing a secure digital space that safeguards their privacy and protects them from online threats. With robust safety measures in place, Kenyan students, parents, and educators can have peace of mind knowing that their online learning environment is secure.
Flexibility and Personalization: Every Kenyan student has unique learning needs and preferences. Our solution recognizes this by offering a structured yet flexible learning approach. Kenyan students can learn and progress at their own pace, choosing the order in which they study the material and engaging with lessons in a way that suits their individual needs. The inclusion of an AI learning assistant further enhances personalization, providing Kenyan students with individualized support and guidance tailored to their learning journey.

We have successfully designed, implemented, and piloted Portable Local Network Servers (PLNS) utilizing Raspberry Pi technology. These servers enable offline access to our educational platform, addressing connectivity challenges in underserved areas. Through pilot deployments in several schools, reaching +2500 students, we've validated the effectiveness of PLNS in providing digital educational resources without relying on internet connectivity.
Zawadi, our AI-powered learning assistant, has been developed, tested, and piloted within our platform. We've crafted engaging and interactive educational content tailored to various subjects and learning levels. Zawadi's performance has been evaluated through user testing, ensuring it delivers personalized learning experiences effectively.
We've successfully commissioned computer labs equipped with PLNS in several public schools in Kenya, including Our Lady of Mercy Primary School. These labs serve as essential resources for students to access digital educational content offline. The pilot deployment of these labs marks a pivotal step in our mission to bridge the digital divide and promote equitable education.
We've forged strategic partnerships with organizations like the Angaza Vijana Foundation and the Mozilla Foundation to support our initiatives and expand our reach. These collaborations have facilitated the pilot deployment of PLNS to additional schools, extending our impact to more students and educators.
Our platform has experienced notable growth and engagement during the pilot stage, as evidenced by the metrics presented in the User Growth Report. We've served an increasing number of customers and beneficiaries, delivering high-quality educational resources and experiences to diverse communities.
