LoHo Learning is tackling three pervasive issues of limited access, affordability and inclusivity to quality education in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Kenya. The scale of this problem is vast, impacting millions of children, not only in Kenya and Sub-Saharan Africa but also on a global scale. According to UNESCO, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest out-of-school rates globally, with approximately 98 million children and youth not attending school in 2021 (UNESCO, 2023). Moreover, the completion rate for primary education in Sub-Saharan Africa stands at only 63%, significantly lower than the global average of 87% in 2020 (UNESCO, 2023). This disparity contributes to broader socio-economic challenges, hindering individual opportunities and perpetuating cycles of poverty. Factors contributing to lower quality of education in Sub-Saharan Africa include rapid population growth rates which makes it impossible for the governments to focus on provision of quality education but instead resort to development of infrastructure. LoHo Learning promotes access to quality education to the rapidly rising population by availing educational resources offline and online, offering credit facilities through partners such as Safaricom Plc, and availing AI personalized education. By providing government-approved content and leveraging existing distribution networks, we seek to reach millions of learners, bridging the gap in educational access and quality. Therefore, our products aim to achieve the recommended teacher to learners' class ration of 40 which currently stands at 56 in Kenya. For instance, LoHo’s hybrid approach of providing offline and online accessibility to education resources overcomes the limitations of traditional infrastructure-dependent education systems. Furthermore, our partnerships with credit facilities such as Safaricom PLC ensure that our users access credit tailored for access to educational resources. These credit facilities enable schools, students and parents to purchase subscriptions to our digital learning platform or invest in educational infrastructure upgrades, such as purchasing devices or improving internet connectivity. LoHo’s AI powered personalized education enhances learning outcomes and engagement, even in classrooms with high student-to-teacher ratios.
In Kenya specifically, educational disparities are pronounced, with rural and marginalized communities facing the brunt of limited access to quality education. Despite government offering funding to basic education, quality of education is low hence increase of private schools which offer quality based on income levels. Therefore, LoHo solves this problem by providing optimal cost that provides 95% saving cost to parents. Additionally, learners with disabilities, particularly the deaf, face significant barriers to accessing quality education, with only 10% of the deaf population receiving formal education. Our commitment to inclusivity is evident in features such as the translation of content into Kenyan Sign Language, ensuring equitable access for learners with disabilities. LoHo optimizes access to quality education through its Elimu Pepe product, which is a platform that brings together all our solutions wholesomely. The flagship products within Elimu Pepe include Kalamu eLearning and LH eBooks, which leverage technology to overcome barriers to access quality education. Kalamu eLearning offers personalized learning experiences, adaptable to individual learner needs, while LH eBooks provide interactive and affordable alternatives to traditional textbooks.

LoHo Learning's solution is tailored to serve a diverse range of stakeholders within Sub-Saharan Africa's education ecosystem, with a primary focus on students, educators, parents and government. Students often face significant barriers to accessing quality education, including limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and socio-economic challenges. Many come from marginalized communities, including rural areas and refugee camps, where educational opportunities are scarce. Furthermore, the educational resources available are not adequately inclusive. The students do not get the individualized attention they deserve from the teachers since the student-to-teacher ratio in Kenyan classes is 56:1 far much exceeding the recommended 40:1. Our solution aims to empower these students by providing personalized learning experiences through Kalamu eLearning and affordable, inclusive educational resources via LH eBooks.
Our solution directly benefits teachers. In many Sub-Saharan African countries, teachers face daunting challenges, including large class sizes, limited training and professional development opportunities, and a lack of access to quality teaching resources. The Kenyan teacher is underserved because the government has done very little to ensure that the teachers are ready for coding learning yet there is a shift from knowledge-based curriculum to competency-based curriculum which entails coding classes. In addition, the digital devices distributed by the Kenyan government are not enough since the enrolment rates for learners is always in an upward trend. Our solution provides educators with innovative tools and resources to enhance their teaching effectiveness and streamline administrative tasks.
The government does not have adequate metrics to gauge the quality of education which they provide. Accordingly, they rely on completion rates instead of analyzing the quality of education as a metric for policy development. The government lacks visibility of its end education stakeholders hence they need a solution which highlights if teachers and learners are meeting the education objectives. Finally, despite the government’s incremental progress in education development, the Financial Year 2024 budget is not enough to address quality of education gaps due to an extreme population growth rate. LoHo learning Elimu Pepe product provides the government with the metrics which they can access to gauge providence and quality education which can guide policy making.
For parents, they are underserved because the majority live below the poverty line while education is a fundamental cost that they must pay. This is an obligation which is hard for majority of parents to meet since the Kenyan economy is struggling with inflation rates. Therefore, in Kenya wealth is an indicator of the type of education accessed by the learner. Consequently, in learners shift between private schools where there is quality education during harvesting seasons when most parents who are peasant farmers can sell their produce to meet the required fees and move back to public schools during the dry season. LoHo Learning empowers parents to provide quality education to their children by cutting on the cost of learning resources such as textbooks, providing them with real-time tracking of their children’s progress hence enabling them to play an active role in their children’s education.
LoHo team is uniquely positioned to provide quality education in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Kenya, due to our experienced leadership, educator expertise, understanding of financial challenges faced by families, and active engagement with government stakeholders. Our team lead, James Ong’ang’a, has personally benefited from public education, and deeply understands the significance of access to quality education. Also, James has spent over a decade working in education and technology sectors across Sub-Saharan Africa, gaining firsthand insights into the challenges faced by students, educators, and educational institutions. This firsthand experience drives our commitment to providing equitable educational opportunities for all children in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Kenya. Furthermore, our team is comprised of former teachers who have firsthand experience in the classroom. This expertise allows us to design and deliver educational content that is tailored to the needs of students and aligned with curriculum standards, ensuring its effectiveness in improving learning outcomes. The former teachers encountered the struggles that learners and teachers encounter in Kenya to access quality education hence leverages on their experience to make quality education accessible to all.
Most of our team are young parents who have school-going children. As young parents ourselves, we empathize with the financial struggles faced by families in Sub-Saharan Africa, where education costs can consume a significant portion of household income (30-40%). This understanding motivates us to develop affordable solutions that deliver high-quality education without imposing undue financial burden on families. Finally, as active players in the educational technology (Ed-Tech) sector, we regularly engage with government stakeholders to understand their priorities, challenges, and policies related to education. This engagement enables us to align our efforts with government initiatives and leverage partnerships to amplify the impact of our solutions. Additionally, our understanding of the government's role in education allows us to navigate regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements effectively.
Finally, we prioritize inclusivity and representation in our decision-making processes, ensuring that the voices of marginalized and underserved communities are heard and respected. Our team includes individuals with backgrounds in education, technology, content creation, marketing, finance, and accessibility, bringing a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving and solution design. This diversity enables us to develop holistic, contextually relevant solutions that address the complex challenges facing education in Sub-Saharan Africa. Also, we actively seek feedback from students, educators, parents, and community leaders through surveys, focus groups, and participatory design workshops. This collaborative approach ensures that our solutions are co-created with the populations that we serve, considering their unique needs, preferences and aspirations. For example, the development of Kalamu eLearning and LH eBooks has been informed by extensive consultations with educators and students, enabling us to tailor our offerings to meet their specific requirements and preferences.
