West Africa, home to millions of students, faces a significant educational challenge compounded by the digital divide and lack of resources. Over 300 million students across Africa are deprived of quality education due to limited internet access, with 95% of school-age children in West and Central Africa lacking internet connectivity. This issue is exacerbated by inadequate educational materials, as demonstrated by the insufficient textbook availability in West Africa, where the ratio can be as dismal as 1:10. The learning poverty rate in sub-Saharan Africa exceeds 80%, highlighting a widespread inability to read and understand basic text by the age of 10. Additionally, socioeconomic disparities further widen this educational gap, as children from wealthier households have significantly better access to education. In Nigeria, many students cannot afford the recommended literature texts, which critically impacts the quality of education they receive
Enlight is dedicated to transforming the educational landscape for West African students, with a particular focus on those preparing for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams. Our solution encompasses a cutting-edge hardware device and an online platform.
In developing our web content, we have partnered with local teachers from Ghana and Nigeria and PhET Interactive Simulations, a renowned provider of science and math simulations. This collaboration ensures our content is not only relevant but also engaging and tailored to the specific requirements of the WAEC syllabus. Our platform is enriched with a vast library of educational materials, including PhET's interactive simulations and our exclusively digitized past paper questions for each topic, and a fine tuned chatbot, making us the only provider of such integrated, syllabus-specific content for West African Examination Council Syllabus.
The centerpiece of our solution, "The Book of Everything" hardware device, is engineered to create localized Wi-Fi hotspots. This allows 50 students within a 100-meter radius to access our comprehensive educational materials offline, breaking down the barriers of internet connectivity and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students, regardless of their location and internet access. Here is the link to our product demo.
Our current target population are high school students (typically aged 15-21) in West Africa whose schools use the West African Examination Council (WAEC) syllabus. These students currently use old textbooks, and teachers notes as a means of educating themselves. They also barely have access to practical education, as most of their labs lack equipment, and or maintenance. Hence, their education is currently deeply rooted in the theoretical aspects of ideas, gleaned from their old tattered textbooks.
Currently, most students have cell phones or internet connectible devices, but are limited in education access due to the high cost, and limited bandwidth of internet network providers in this region. Furthermore, some of the government-funded public schools have ‘computer labs’ donated by the Ministry of education which lie in disuse due to the cost of financing internet connectivity.
The Book of Everything will serve these students by eliminating the cost of the internet and giving them quality education on the devices they currently use. Furthermore, the books can be placed in these unused computer labs in schools, and students can have access to the resources on the book, whilst improving their computer usage skills.
Enlight's impact does not end at replacing the cost of textbooks. We aim to improve the overall quality of education received by students, hence we are developing a platform that would not only host textbooks, but also other educational materials such as class notes, practice examinations, and an interactive simulation bank in order to instill a practical based learning experience.
All members of the team came from underfunded, underprivileged high schools in their respective countries before having the opportunity to attend the African Leadership Academy (ALA) in Johannesburg. This idea was born in an Entrepreneurial Leadership class, as a solution to one of the prevailing problems most students faced before attending ALA. We arrived at this solution by discussing what problems we each faced in high school, and what service or product would have aided with that problem. Hence, the desire to solve this problem was born from a need to ensure that our younger generation do not have to suffer from the same problems that plagued us.
By reaching out to former classmates and teachers, we were able to pool ideas on how to create a technology to reduce inequality between underfunded public schools, and private schools. We also discovered that the problem with the quality of education was faced in both private and public schools alike, and this was due to the approach with which the curriculum was taught to students.
We have unique connections with the communities we aim to serve, and have already started building a network of resources, who aim to fulfill the same goal as us within the same region

We have made significant progress across all of our products. When it comes to “The Book of Everything” we had built an MVP, iterated over the proof of concept we had started with two years ago. The electronic book was able to broadcast to 25 students at a 60 meter radius for our proof of concept. Our current version is able to connect over 50 simultaneously with good speed and 100 meter radius(through obstacles) making it perfect for in school campus applications. The book is also solar powered with a good battery management system that keeps it running in the most remote of places. It hosts the refactored version of the Enlight platform. “
The Enlight Platform” is yet another one of our products which is essentially a web app with a gamified UI catering learning materials via refined notes, interactive simulations, and numerous problem sets with video explanations. We have also added a tutorbot feature that answers students questions and helps them navigate the platform. The tutor-bot is still being trained on the contents of the WAEC curriculum. The platform is hosted both on the web and on “The Book of Everything.” Currently the student facing part of the platform is complete and we are in the process of building augmenting features such as issue reporting, maintenance, and admin side interface. When it comes to testing the tutor-bot we continue to do Regex Validation and make sure responses don’t have hallucinations. As for the platform, all we have done so far is in house beta testing. We plan to test it with an appropriate sample of students from our target schools within the coming months.

The challenge of dwindling teacher-to-student ratios in Africa represents a significant hurdle in education. Traditional efforts by governments to tackle this issue through increasing the number of qualified teachers are proving inadequate due to slow progress and the sheer scale of need. Our solution, the Enlight Book of Everything, addresses this challenge innovatively and effectively by leveraging technology to facilitate partial self-learning, thus mitigating the shortage of qualified instructors.
The core of our innovation lies in the design and deployment of the Enlight Book of Everything—a cost-effective, scalable, and easily deployable device that provides comprehensive educational content and interactive learning tools. This device is not just a repository of information but an interactive platform that explains complex concepts tailored to specific curriculums. The affordability and ease of assembly of these devices make them a viable alternative to the traditional and costly model of increasing and maintaining teaching staff.
Our business model underscores the sustainability and scalability of this approach. Unlike the recurring costs associated with hiring and training new teachers, our device requires only a one-time purchase and minimal yearly subscription fees. This drastically reduces the overall expenditure on educational resources, allowing for broader deployment and greater impact.
Furthermore, the Enlight Platform is an integral part of this device, ensuring that students without reliable internet access can still benefit from a wealth of educational content. For those with internet access, the same platform offers additional resources and connectivity, thus bridging the digital divide.
Innovation extends to our use of technology with the integration of the LLM tutor-bot, accessible both through the Enlight Platform and via SMS. This feature is crucial for reaching students who do not own smartphones, thus broadening the accessibility of quality education.
Our solution catalyzes broader positive impacts by setting a precedent for integrating technology in education in a way that is both scalable and adaptable to various educational contexts. By demonstrating the effectiveness of this model, we can inspire other innovators in the space to adopt and adapt similar technologies, potentially leading to widespread changes in how educational services are delivered across the continent.
The broader impact of our solution on the educational landscape in Africa is profound. Not only does it improve pass rates among students by providing consistent and personalized educational support, but it also introduces them to the latest educational content and exciting fields of interest. This exposure is invaluable, particularly for students in remote areas who might otherwise never encounter such opportunities.
In conclusion, the Enlight Book of Everything is set to revolutionize the educational paradigm in Africa by providing an immediate, effective, and sustainable solution to the teacher shortage crisis. Our approach not only addresses the current challenges but also sets the stage for a future where technology and education merge to unlock the full potential of students across the continent.
We believe that the problem with quality education is centered around the lack of access to quality and practical educational materials.
Our theory of change is centered around the idea that by bridging the gap between students and quality educational materials, we will be able to improve the quality of education received by students, which would leave students with a greater potential to chase and achieve their dreams without any barriers.
The input for this theory of change is the “Book of Everything.” Any student within the range of the book can educate themselves without any additional costs due to usage of the internet. Furthemore, as the student is limited to resources on the book, it will ensure that they spend time studying educational materials. The resources on the book are aimed at improving the educational experience of the student by imbuing practical learning into their everyday lives. Educators would also have a better means of tracking educational progress from each of their students. These students are therefore better equipped to pass their local examinations, and have a knowledge of content which is equal to their peers from other countries. Excelling at the local exams is a gateway to a future filled with multiple career opportunities/trajectories.
For our other partners - education ministries, NGO’s - our input to them is a cost effective means of reaching more students. The expected output is an increase in university enrolment, matriculation and graduation rates.
Our impact goals for Enlight are centered around addressing the educational inequality prevalent in underserved communities, particularly in regions with limited or no internet access. We aim to empower students with quality education, regardless of their geographic location or socioeconomic background. Our overarching impact goals include:
1. Increasing Access to Quality Education: Our primary goal is to ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has access to quality educational resources. We measure progress towards this goal by tracking the number of students reached by our solution, particularly those in remote or marginalized communities with limited access to traditional educational infrastructure.
2. Improving Learning Outcomes: We aim to improve learning outcomes by providing engaging and interactive educational content that fosters deeper understanding and critical thinking skills. To measure progress in this area, we track key indicators such as student performance on assessments, graduation rates, and feedback from teachers and students regarding the effectiveness of our educational materials.
3. Bridging the Digital Divide: One of our core objectives is to bridge the digital divide by providing offline access to digital educational resources. We measure progress by monitoring the expansion of our reach into underserved communities with limited internet connectivity and assessing the impact of our solution on narrowing the gap in educational access between urban and rural areas.
4. Empowering Educators: We recognize the crucial role that educators play in facilitating student learning. Therefore, we aim to empower teachers with the tools and resources they need to deliver high-quality instruction. Progress towards this goal is measured through surveys and feedback from teachers regarding the utility and effectiveness of our platform in supporting their teaching practices.
5. Promoting Gender Equality: We are committed to promoting gender equality in education by ensuring equitable access to educational opportunities for girls and boys. We measure progress by tracking the gender distribution of students using our platform and monitoring any disparities in access or participation based on gender.
To measure our progress towards these impact goals, we employ a combination of qualitative and quantitative indicators, including:
- Number of students reached by our solution
- Student engagement metrics, such as time spent on the platform and interaction with educational content
- Academic performance indicators, including test scores and grades
- Graduation rates and post-education outcomes
- Feedback and testimonials from users, including students, teachers, and community leaders
- Geographic distribution of users to assess reach in underserved areas
- Gender disaggregated data to evaluate gender equality in access and participation
By continuously monitoring these indicators and adapting our strategies based on feedback and insights gained from our stakeholders, we ensure that our efforts are effectively driving positive impact and advancing our mission of educational equity and empowerment.
At the core of our innovative solution, the Enlight Book of Everything, lies the Enlight Platform—an embodiment of both modern and traditional technologies crafted to enhance educational access worldwide. Powered by a modified single-board computer, the Raspberry Pi, our platform integrates advanced router boards, external Wi-Fi adapters, and a robust battery management system (BMS) complemented by solar recharging capabilities. This system supports terabytes of secondary storage essential for housing a vast repository of educational content.
The Enlight Platform is a sophisticated web application designed to systematically organize educational materials in diverse formats, including videos, texts, and interactive simulations. A pivotal feature of our platform is a fine-tuned chatbot, leveraging the LLAMA 2 model via OpenPipe, tailored to the educational curricula and cultural contexts of various countries in West Africa. This chatbot, accessible via the Enlight Platform, offers students immediate academic support and personalized learning experiences.
Our technological approach harnesses the power of the PERN stack (PostgreSQL, Express.js, React, and Node.js) and TypeScript to build a resilient and scalable web-hosted platform. The integration of cloud services such as AWS S3 for storage and AWS RDS for database management ensures data integrity and accessibility. Additionally, the use of open-source AI APIs, particularly LLAMA 2, allows us to refine the chatbot's responses based on extensive datasets, such as the WAEC curriculum.
Recognizing the diverse technological access in different regions, our platform is not limited to web access. The tutor-bot feature is designed to interface with SMS technology, enabling students with basic mobile phones to interact with a sophisticated AI tool. This inclusivity ensures that quality education and academic support are not confined to those with advanced devices but are extended to students in remote or under-resourced areas.
By bridging state-of-the-art technology with conventional educational methods, the Enlight Book of Everything stands as a testament to the power of integrated learning solutions. Our technology does not merely store information but actively engages with students to foster an environment conducive to learning and personal development.

Our solution tackles two major aspects of the education problem in Africa: Quality of Education, and lack of access to online resources. Our business model capitulates on this, hence, we have two major income streams. The first is from the sale of the “Book of Everything.” Each book will host the learning platform with educational resources, as well as an LMS style service in order for local teachers to upload their notes and other educational content. Our target market here includes school administrators, ministries of education, government officials, education affiliated NGOs. We provide value to these customers by helping them fulfill their goals of improving education in their districts, by a cheaper, more quantifiable means. Typically, these customers would have to purchase textbooks - which have a limit of one user at any given time. Hence, the cost of providing this for every learner is prohibitive. With the book, they cut down cost on textbooks by a factor of 50-60. Furthermore, based on analytics of usage, these customers are better able to track impact, by tracking course interaction to a difference in the amount of students who excel in the course. Ohe end users of the book are high school students within local communities or schools that purchase the book. These students would have access to quality educational resources at their fingertips. By utilizing the Phet Simulations, they would also be able to have a taste of practical learning for most of their subjects. Another category of end users would be educators. Teachers would be able to develop/upload their notes, and incorporate interactive simulations in order to broaden the understanding of their students. Furthermore, they would be able to track student progress/participation in different modules of the course, thereby enabling them to pinpoint the least understood modules, and work on improving the quality of content.
Our second stream would come from a subscription to the online educational platform for the students with the means of connecting to the internet. Over here, our customers and end users are the same. We add value to our customers by providing them with uniquely tailored educational content, suited to their local curriculum. Furthermore, we provide practice questions for the examinations they are required to take at the end of their senior year. By using our platform, students can track their overall progress, work on their weak points, and keep themselves accountable to their educational goals.
Our key partners would include education boards such as the West African Examination Council, local ministries of education, educators across public and private high schools.

To ensure the financial sustainability of Enlight, we have developed a multi-faceted approach that encompasses various revenue streams and funding sources.
Firstly, we plan to generate revenue through the sale of our flagship product, the "Book of Everything" device. This device provides offline access to quality educational resources and is targeted at schools, non-profit organizations, and government entities aiming to improve educational outcomes in underserved communities. By selling the device at an affordable price point, we aim to make it accessible to a wide range of customers while also generating revenue to support our operations. Given how affordable, efficient and revolutionary our innovation is, we make a compelling case for these entities as we help them more than 10x their impact while significantly cutting down their budget.
Additionally, we will offer subscription-based services for access to premium content and updates on our platform. This will include features such as virtual labs, interactive learning modules, and teacher resources, which will be valuable to educators and learners alike. By providing a subscription model, we can establish a recurring revenue stream while continuously enhancing our offerings to meet the evolving needs of our users.
Furthermore, we are exploring partnerships with governments and non-profit organizations to secure service contracts for the deployment of our solution in targeted regions. These partnerships may involve funding agreements, grants, or subsidies to support the implementation of our educational technology in schools and communities where it is most needed.
In terms of evidence of our financial sustainability plan's success to date, we have already made significant progress in securing funding and support for our initiative. We have received grants from organizations such as the Little Bets Foundation, African Leadership Academy, Digital Applied Learning and Innovation Lab (DALI Lab) and the Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship which have enabled us to conduct research and development, prototype testing, and initial market validation.
We have spoken to a lot of educational organizations who have expressed interest in our product. We are currently working with two of such organizations, Miami Edtech and Lead for Ghana, are hosting their content in our devices for our pilot testing this summer. They have demonstrated immense interest and are willing to purchase as soon as we are ready to sell.
Additionally, we have engaged in discussions with potential investors who have expressed interest in supporting our mission financially. While specific details of these conversations are confidential, they indicate a growing recognition of the value proposition offered by Enlight and the potential for sustainable revenue generation in the future.
Overall, our approach to financial sustainability combines sales revenue, subscription services, and strategic partnerships to ensure the long-term viability of our organization. Through careful planning and execution, we are confident in our ability to fund our work while making a meaningful impact on educational equity in underserved communities.
