Game-based Learning School for Teachers
- Indonesia
- Nonprofit
Indonesia’s educational challenges are multi-faceted, significantly impacting the nation's youth and their readiness for the workforce. Globally, the need for effective education is urgent, as approximatelythree-quarters of young people (Including Indonesian youth) lack essential employment skills, reflecting a worldwide crisis in educational quality and access. In Indonesia, the scale of the educational challenges is particularly alarming. According to the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Indonesia ranked 68th amongparticipating countries. This low ranking underscores the critical gaps in learning and teaching quality. Nationally, a significant proportion of teachers—44%—do not meet the 2005 Teacher Law's requirement of having a four-year degree. This issue is more pronounced at the primary level, where only 23% of teachers have the requisite academic qualifications. Many Indonesian teachers lack adequate subject knowledge and pedagogical skills, which are crucial for effective teaching. For instance, an aptitude test revealed that primary and secondary school teachers scored only 38% and 45% respectively, with even lower scores in critical subjects such as Physics, Math, and Economics. These deficiencies hinder their ability to provide high-quality education and contribute to the broader issue of underprepared youth lacking essential skills for modern employment.
Ludenara’s solution is a game-based learning school designed specifically for teachers. This program empowers teachers to design and implement educational board games that are tailored to the specific needs and environments of their students. Recognizing that teachers are the most knowledgeable about their students' unique learning challenges and styles, our initiative provides them with the skills to create engaging and educational board games that enhance both academic and 21st-century skills.
How Our Solution Works
Our solution consists of a structured training program for teachers that includes:
Game Design Principles: Teachers learn the foundational principles of educational game design. This includes creating engaging narratives, incorporating educational content seamlessly, and crafting gameplay that motivates and educates students.
Technology Integration: Contrary to high-tech solutions, our program focuses on "pen and paper" technology. We guide teachers in using accessible materials to develop board games. This approach is chosen specifically because it does not require significant financial or technological resources, making it ideal for under-resourced schools.
Implementation Strategies: The program covers effective strategies for integrating game-based learning in the classroom. Teachers learn how to effectively use board games as a tool to increase student engagement and improve learning outcomes, adapting the use of these games to different learning environments and needs.
Feedback and Iteration: Throughout the program, teachers receive continuous feedback on their game designs from peers and educational experts. This process of collaborative critique and revision helps refine their games to ensure they are effective and engaging in real-world classroom settings.
Technology Used
Recognizing the resource constraints in many schools, our program uses simple and widely available materials such as paper, markers, and dice to create board games. This low-tech approach ensures that all teachers, regardless of their school's technological capabilities, can participate and benefit from the program. Moreover, this method promotes creativity and resourcefulness, encouraging teachers to innovate within their means.
Validation and Impact
The effectiveness of our game-based learning approach is supported by extensive research indicating that educational games can significantly enhance learning outcomes. This includes not only academic knowledge but also vital 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving. Feedback from our own programs across various Indonesian cities supports this data, with teachers reporting higher levels of student engagement and improved educational outcomes.

Who We Serve
Our primary beneficiaries are teachers working in underserved schools. These schools typically suffer from below-average funding, which limits not only the resources available for extracurricular activities but also confines them to outdated educational materials and technology. Many of these schools struggle with inadequate infrastructure—dilapidated buildings, insufficient classroom space, and a lack of essential facilities such as science labs, libraries, and even basic sanitation.
Moreover, staffing issues are prevalent, with a high percentage of teachers lacking formal qualifications or specialized training due to restricted professional development opportunities. These teachers face large classroom sizes that exceed recommended student-teacher ratios, further complicating the teaching environment.
The socioeconomic backdrop of these communities adds another layer of complexity; many students come from low-income families grappling with food insecurity, healthcare accessibility, and housing instability. Academic challenges are evident, with standardized test scores consistently below average and higher dropout rates.
How Our Solution Addresses Their Needs
Ludenara's game-based learning program is designed to directly address these challenges by empowering teachers with tools and strategies that are feasible within their constrained environments. By focusing on game-based learning using simple, accessible materials like paper and markers, we provide an innovative educational approach that does not rely on extensive financial or technological investments.
Impact on Teachers and Students:
Enhanced Engagement and Learning Outcomes: Through training in game design and implementation, teachers can create interactive learning experiences that engage students more effectively than traditional methods. This is particularly impactful in environments where students struggle with motivation and attendance.
Professional Development: Our program offers continuous professional growth opportunities for teachers. By involving them in regular workshops, in-depth interviews, and collaborative game-design sessions, we ensure that their professional needs are met and that they are equipped to handle diverse classroom situations effectively.
Resourcefulness and Creativity: Teachers learn to use readily available materials to overcome the lack of resources. This not only fosters creativity but also instills a sense of capability and resilience, empowering teachers to innovate despite limitations.
Community and Peer Support: By facilitating regular meetings and creating platforms for peer learning, our solution builds a supportive community among teachers. This network enables them to share best practices, receive feedback, and continuously refine their teaching methods and games based on real-world classroom dynamics.
Sustainable Educational Practices: The skills and tools we provide are sustainable and can be repeatedly used and adapted, offering long-term benefits without requiring continual external input.
To ensure that Ludenara’s game-based learning school for teachers
effectively addresses the real-world challenges faced by teachers in
underserved schools, we have implemented a rigorous and continuous
engagement process. This involves regular meetings, in-depth interviews,
classroom observations, and surveys to gather comprehensive feedback
and insights directly from the teachers we aim to serve.
Composition of Our Team
Our team consists of two key departments that synergize to ensure the effectiveness and relevance of our training programs:

They are actively involved in local teacher gatherings and educational events, which positions them perfectly to disseminate best practices and mentor other teachers in adopting game-based learning strategies.
Proximity to the Communities
The strength of Ludenara’s approach lies in our team’s proximity to the communities we serve. Many of our field team members are from these very communities, giving them firsthand insight into the specific challenges and needs of the teachers and students there. This close connection fosters trust and ensures that the solutions we develop are grounded in reality and are culturally and contextually appropriate.
Community-Driven Design and Implementation
The design and implementation of our solutions are profoundly influenced by continuous community input. Our field team plays a crucial role in this process, gathering feedback and insights through their regular interactions with other teachers and community members. This feedback directly informs the support team, enabling them to tailor training and resources that meet the evolving needs of the communities.
Moreover, by involving community members—especially teachers—in the design process, we ensure that our solutions are not only accepted but also enthusiastically embraced. This participatory approach guarantees that our programs are not seen as external interventions but as community-owned solutions that address their specific educational challenges.
