O-LAB: Empowering Indigenous Modern Education
- Colombia
- Hybrid of for-profit and nonprofit
We are addressing the persistent gaps in learning and educational opportunities, particularly among indigenous youth. Globally, 250 million children are not in school, and many more lack access to quality education. In our region, La Guajira, the indigenous region of Colombia, only 29% of students graduate from high school, with many lacking the skills needed for today's job market. Only 5% access formal jobs. This leaves thousands of young people unemployed or underpaid. Factors contributing to the problem include limited access to education, disengagement in the learning process, and insufficient job skills training.
We ensure that youth, regardless of where they come from, have access to a modern education that equips them to thrive in today's world.
O-lab makes AI-powered gamified learning experiences. Think: educational computer games. We create games for all subjects.
But then we go further.
We partner with companies to co-create educational games that teach job skills.
Students see what it’s like to be a package driver, an electrical engineer, or a scientist.
Students aren’t just playing games. They’re gaining real-world expertise. They create real-life solutions like solar panels and hydroponic systems.
Students share learnings to corporate partners to gain additional career support.
This approach empowers them to explore various subjects and develop essential skills for social-emotional competencies, problem-solving, digital literacy, and for the 21st-century job market.
Our platform features bite-sized lessons and animations to make learning fun. It works offline, in low-tech devices, and is adaptable to any language, even indigenous tongues. Students can use O-lab in and out of school.
AI allows teachers to monitor and customize learning at their students’ own level and pace.
O-lab improves learning engagement, knowledge retention and outcomes by up to 80%.
In our first year launching o-lab outside my region, we reached over 10,000 youths organically in unexpected countries.
With AI, O-Lab now provides personalized learning opportunities at a global scale.
With Solve's support, we aim to reach directly 500 students in marginalized schools of La Guajira, during the first year of the grant, paving the way to expand our impact across the Americas.

Our solution targets youth aged 12 to 21 years old, primarily from marginalized communities in regions like La Guajira, Colombia. At least 50% are young women.
Adolescents who are at a critical stage in their educational journey, facing challenges such as high dropout rates, limited access to quality education, and a lack of exposure to diverse career opportunities.
Typically, these youth come from low-income families and may lack the resources and support needed to succeed academically and professionally. They often attend under-resourced schools with limited access to modern learning tools and may not receive adequate guidance on career pathways.
