Data from UNICEF indicates that many children lack basic numeracy, literacy, STEM, digital and psychosocial skills in a developing country like Ghana. The situation is worsened since textbooks are not available to the poor in government schools after the implementation of the new curriculum in 2019.
Inadequate access to textbooks and other educational resources have slowed down the teaching and learning of over 5 million basic school students in about 18,000 basic schools in Ghana. Many teachers and students especially those in the 4885 public schools do not have access to adequate, affordable textbooks and are affected the most.
Therefore, Teachers have to pay huge sums of money to purchase their own textbooks to teach students in public or government schools.
Based on our discussion with teachers, parents, students and school heads and examining existing textbooks available for the advantaged in private schools, these resources are not well developed to properly address the literacy, numeracy, digital, technical and psychosocial skills of students.
UNESCO predicts that the livelihood and future of these children are at jeopardy.
UNESCO recommends the provision of well developed resources such as textbooks, apps, e-learning and more to address these issues.
Also, a Research by the Institute of Green Growth Solutions (2015) on‛‛Climate Change Learning Strategy in Ghana: Background Report′′discovered that although there are many capacity building efforts for climate education in Ghana, there is insufficient knowledge and skill for climate change mitigation across all levels in Ghana. However, the concept of climate change is technical or practical. Therefore the study recommends practical Climate Education for basic schools to universities through teacher education. This recommendation is in line with UNSDG12.8.1 on: Extent to which (i) global citizenship education and(ii)education for sustainable development (including climate change education) are mainstreamed into teacher education ; and student assessment; as well as UNSDG 13-Target 3:To improve education,awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
