The Product-Based Course we are offering for the Global Challenge is the Ground Robotic Oil Spill Surveillance (GROSS) System Product-Based Course.
PRODUCT-BASED COURSES is a novel way to teach engineering courses by manufacturing a company’s product from start to finish. It is a way to ensure that the student has practical hands-on experience in the design, development, and manufacturing of a company’s product so that they are better prepared and possess the required expertise and experience to work in an engineering company upon graduation. It will also help students gain integrated working experience with a company better than an internship, and they will be under the direct supervision of the Professor handling the course. Product-Based Courses is also a means for Universities to secure collaborations and partner with engineering companies in the Industry. The Product Selected for the course depends on the Industry the Engineering company is involved in.
A Product-Based Course is completed within 14 weeks to easily be scheduled into a University’s academic semester. Grading is focused on the student’s ability to manufacture a unit of the company’s engineering product, conduct quality research on the company’s product and to be Innovative in an Engineering Sense. Typical Grading Structure for a Product-Based Course is shown below:
Milestone1 (20%) - Is the student able to manufacture the Company’s Product and demonstrate the operation of Tier 1 features of the product?
Milestone 2 (20%) - Is the student able to manufacture the Company’s Product and demonstrate the operation of Tier 2 features of the product?
Product Research and Publication (20%) - The Student is assigned a Research Topic on the Company’s Product, and is expected to prepare a Publication based on the results obtained.
Product Demonstration and Presentation (20%) - The Student will give a Final PowerPoint Presentation on their Designed Company Product, and Physically Demonstrate the working of the Product to the Professor.
Unleash You Creativity (20%) - The student is given extra points for being innovative with the product.
Typically, engineers who secure jobs in the industry are only given the opportunity to learn and master how to develop, refine, test or produce a section of a company’s product, and as such, their skills and development as engineers in their career path is often limited.
