TherapyLab: Early Diagnosis and Intervention Teletherapy Platform
- Nigeria
- Hybrid of for-profit and nonprofit
Nigeria, Africa's largest country and home to 219 million people, has had its share of poor education infrastructure and inadequately accessible educational resources, especially as a developing country. Recent data shows that the number of out-of-school children has risen to 250 million globally, with hundreds of millions of students in classrooms that lack adequate access to learning materials or disability-adapted infrastructure. An estimate shows that 95.5% of children with disabilities in Nigeria have no access to education. Reasons such as hunger, poor access to inclusive learning environments, assistive learning tools, shortages of therapists and special educators, geographical barriers, individualized education programs (IEP), parent involvement, enhanced quality, accessibility, and effectiveness of therapy interventions, and educational support for neurodivergent students have played a huge role in exacerbating the persistence gap in learning and educational opportunities.
TherapyLab is an early diagnosis and intervention teletherapy platform designed to facilitate remote diagnosis, treatment/therapy sessions, and consultations between therapists, neurodivergent students, parents, and special educators. It leverages technologies such as artificial intelligence, video conferencing, interactive tools, secure communication features, and data management capabilities to deliver virtual therapy services, removing issues such as inadequate accessible educational resources and assistive technologies, geographical barriers, community support, and shortages of therapists and special educators in Nigeria and Africa at large.
Our solution, TherapyLab, is developed to help a diverse range of individuals, including learners with disabilities, developmental issues, social-emotional issues, and mental health issues, as well as special educators, therapists, parents, and caregivers involved in the care and education of neurodivergent children and youths. The target population encompasses the following:
1. Neurodivergent students:
Students with physical disabilities, sensory impairments, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), speech and language disorders, learning disabilities, emotional or behavioral disorders, and other special needs. Including those staying in rural and remote communities, underserved regions, or areas with limited access to healthcare and educational resources.
2. Parents and caregivers:
The TherapyLab platform empowers parents and caregivers by offering virtual parent training sessions, therapy resources, progress updates, communication channels with therapists and educators, and guidance on supporting therapy goals, fostering their active involvement, knowledge, confidence, and partnership in their child's development.
3. Therapists and special educators:
The TherapyLab platform empowers therapists (speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, etc.) and educators by providing virtual therapy tools, assessment resources, data management systems, collaboration platforms, training modules, and professional development opportunities, enhancing their ability to deliver effective interventions, monitor student progress, streamline workflows, and promote family-centered care.
The TherapyLab's team comprises professionals with diverse expertise in areas such as special education, speech therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, psychology, nursing, assistive technology development, user experience design, and community engagement. Parents and caregivers of children with disabilities are also part of the team, fostering collaboration between stakeholders.
The prototype has been presented and validated in an edtech workshop organized by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in 2023 in Nigeria. The prototype is currently being tested by parents and allied health professionals to ensure that TherapyLab meets the needs of learners.

- Prototype
We have developed a working prototype, and we are currently piloting it with a few users and testers. The prototype has been presented and validated in an educational technology workshop organized by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in 2023 in Nigeria. Our solution got selected as a top-10 finalist at the Impact Africa Program organized by Xcene Research, Lagos, Nigeria. Our solution also got the Canadian Empowered Startups program, and we are currently working hard to complete the pilot phase and gain a market fit.
