At the onset of the armed Anglophone conflict in Cameroon, my school was attacked, and I was displaced and forced out of school for a year. As a high school student at the time, this experience had a severe impact on my mental health.
The specific problem e-Mentor addresses is the disruption of access to education for internally displaced learners in conflict-affected regions, with a primary focus on Cameroon and Central and West Africa. The armed Anglophone conflict in Cameroon has resulted in the destruction of schools, leaving more than 1 million students without access to education, according to UNICEF. Over the course of seven years of violent conflict, more than 4,000 schools have been burnt, severely disrupting academic infrastructure. UNICEF reports that more than 67 percent of students in affected regions lack access to education.
This disruption not only hampers immediate academic development but also exacerbates social ills such as violent extremism and crime among marginalized learners. Without access to education, displaced students are pushed into situations of frustration and hopelessness, increasing the likelihood of engaging in negative behaviors. If left unaddressed, this problem will perpetuate a cycle of hopelessness, poverty, and crime among the youth, contributing to existing insecurity in conflict-affected regions.
The scale of this problem is significant, with millions of students affected not only in Cameroon but also in neighboring regions facing similar conflicts. The destruction of schools and disruption of education pose a major challenge to the development and stability of these communities. e-Mentor aims to mitigate this problem by providing displaced students with access to affordable, quality education through innovative technology solutions, ultimately empowering them to break free from the cycle of despair and contribute positively to their communities.
Our solution, e-Mentor, is a revolutionary project specifically designed to address the educational hurdles faced by internally displaced students in conflict-affected regions like Cameroon. It provides these students with a unique educational experience through standalone headsets powered by Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technology.
Here's a straightforward breakdown of how e-Mentor works:
1. Standalone Headsets: Students wear specially designed headsets that are equipped with VR/AR technology. These headsets function independently, meaning they don't rely on traditional sources of electricity or internet connectivity.
2. Immersive Learning: Through the e-Mentor platform, students are immersed in interactive educational content. They engage with lessons and simulations in a virtual environment, enhancing their understanding and retention of subjects.
3. Solar-Powered and Connected: The headsets are powered by solar energy and have SIM cards for connectivity. This ensures that students can access educational materials even in remote areas with limited infrastructure.
4. Teacher Support: Trained teachers, in collaboration with organizations like Open Dreams, guide students through the e-Mentor platform. They provide support and assistance to ensure students make the most of their learning experience.
e-Mentor's innovative approach not only provides access to education but also improves the quality of learning for displaced students. By leveraging technology and partnerships, we're breaking down barriers to education and fostering a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape in conflict-affected regions.
Our solution, e-Mentor, directly serves internally displaced learners in conflict-affected regions, primarily focusing on Cameroon and extending to Central and West Africa. These students face immense challenges due to the destruction of schools and infrastructure caused by armed conflict, leaving them without access to education. e-Mentor addresses this pressing issue by providing these students with remote courses curated by trained teachers, delivered through an innovative standalone headset equipped with VR/AR technology.
Through our pilot phase, e-Mentor has already impacted over 800 internally displaced students, enabling them to regain access to education from the safety of their homes. Additionally, we have trained over 150 school teachers across three regions of Cameroon, empowering them to create and deliver courses tailored to the needs of displaced learners through our platform. This not only addresses the immediate need for education but also enhances the capacity of educators to support and engage with their students effectively.
The impact of e-Mentor goes beyond academic improvement. By providing access to education and empowering internally displaced students, we mitigate the risk of their involvement in negative activities such as violent extremism, ultimately contributing to greater societal stability and security. Moreover, investing in the education of these marginalized learners is a critical step towards nation-building, as it equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute positively to their communities and societies.
The recognition e-Mentor has received on a global scale, including prestigious events like the Moonshot Awards and the TotalEnergies Startupper Challenge, underscores the scalability and impact of our innovative solution. Our long-term vision is ambitious—to empower one million learners in West and Central Africa to regain access to education by 2030, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).
As the leader of our team, I intimately understand the challenge, having personally experienced the violent Anglophone crisis in Cameroon which forced me out of school. This experience fuels my passion and commitment to addressing the educational barriers faced by internally displaced students. Living amidst the ongoing armed conflict, I am deeply embedded in the community, providing me with invaluable insight into their daily struggles and needs.
Our solution, e-Mentor, is driven by feedback from the communities we serve. We prioritize their input, ideas, and agendas, ensuring that our solution is relevant and tailored to their specific needs. Our team includes volunteers who are internally displaced students, providing firsthand perspectives and invaluable contributions to our efforts.
Additionally, our co-founder - Moumie Mohamed, a Cameroonian currently studying at Harvard, has lived in Cameroon up until his departure for studies. This proximity to the affected communities has allowed him to witness the challenges faced by internally displaced students firsthand and brings a deep understanding of the local context to our team. He has also worked with internally displaced students on several platforms including initiatives like Dewize Foundation.
Together, we are deeply committed to creating meaningful impact. Our personal experiences, community involvement, and dedication to inclusivity equip us to design and deliver the e-Mentor solution to those who need it most. We are not just outsiders offering solutions from afar; we are members of the community, dedicated to improving the lives of internally displaced students in conflict-affected regions.

Based on our progress and accomplishments, our solution, e-Mentor, is currently at the Pilot stage of development. Here's why we selected this stage:
1. Partnered Pilots: We have partnered with S7 Academy as an implementing partner organization for our ongoing pilot phase. This partnership allows us to test and iterate on our solution in real-world settings, ensuring that it effectively meets the needs of internally displaced students.
2. Beneficiaries Served: Over the past two years, we have empowered more than 800 internally displaced students through our pilot program. This demonstrates our ability to reach and positively impact our target population.
3. Teacher Training: We have partnered with organizations like Open Dreams and the US Embassy in Cameroon to train over 150 teachers. These teachers are now equipped to utilize our platform effectively and create demo courses. Moving forward, we will continue to support and empower them to create platform content as the needs of the students evolve.
4. Functional MVP: We have developed and tested a fully functioning Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with pedagogists at Open Dreams, an international educational NGO. This MVP serves as the foundation of our solution, allowing us to gather feedback and make necessary improvements.
5. User Feedback:
Throughout our pilot phase, we have actively solicited feedback from students to ensure that e-Mentor meets their needs effectively. We have conducted surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions to gather insights into user experiences and preferences. The feedback received has been overwhelmingly positive, with users expressing appreciation for the immersive learning experience provided by e-Mentor.
6. Sustainability:
Ensuring the long-term sustainability of e-Mentor is a key priority for us. To achieve this, we are developing a comprehensive sustainability strategy that encompasses both financial sustainability and scalability. Ultimately, our goal is to establish e-Mentor as a sustainable and scalable solution that has a lasting impact on the lives of internally displaced students in conflict-affected regions.
Overall, our achievements demonstrate that we have moved beyond the concept stage and are actively piloting our solution in partnership with key stakeholders. We are focused on iterating and refining our solution based on real-world feedback to ensure its effectiveness and scalability.
We are applying to Solve because we recognize the transformative potential of our solution and understand the need for collaborative partnerships to scale our impact.
