Currently there are 9.75 crore (97.5 million) amount of people having tremors throughout India and it is expected to rise to 12.5 crore (125 million) by 2030. But the annual median income of an average Indian is ₹25,107 ($344). A quick research revealed that they can’t afford assistive devices and no Indian companies are making them as well. So there is an urgent need to generate affordable and accessible solutions for people with tremors.
While surgical interventions like deep brain stimulation offer long-term tremor control, they face limited utilization due to factors such as high costs, patient preferences, and perceived risks. Consequently, there is a growing interest in exploring the potential of medical devices to fill this gap, providing safer and more efficient tremor relief. By focusing on the development and integration of assistive devices, advancements in tremor management can significantly enhance the well-being and daily functioning of individuals affected by this disorder.
Our solution involves employing a variety of simple and affordable assistive devices tailored for individuals with tremors to facilitate their daily activities with minimal assistance. These devices would be equipped with sensors to collect data on the users' movements and tremor patterns. This data would then be transmitted to a clinician or healthcare provider who would monitor and analyze it. By leveraging this information, clinicians can gain valuable insights into the severity and progression of the tremors, as well as the effectiveness of the assistive devices in managing them. This data-driven approach enables clinicians to tailor rehabilitation programs more effectively to each individual's needs, ultimately improving their quality of life and functional independence.
Our solution serves individuals affected by Parkinson's disease (PD), including patients, caregivers, healthcare practitioners, and healthcare systems. The impact of our solution on their lives is multifaceted:
Patients: Our low-cost assistive devices provide practical support for managing tremor symptoms, such as rigidity, and impaired mobility. By having access to these devices, patients can experience improved quality of life, increased independence, and enhanced ability to perform daily activities.
Caregivers: Caregivers often shoulder a significant burden in supporting individuals with tremors. Our solution alleviates some of this burden by offering assistive devices that make caregiving tasks more manageable. This can reduce stress and burnout among caregivers while improving the overall caregiving experience.
Healthcare Practitioners: Our innovative devices empower healthcare practitioners with tools to better assist their patients with tremors. By incorporating these devices into their practice, practitioners can offer more comprehensive care, tailor treatment plans more effectively, and monitor patient progress more accurately.
Healthcare Systems: Implementing low-cost assistive devices for tremors management can lead to cost savings for healthcare systems by reducing hospital admissions, emergency room visits, and long-term care expenses. Moreover, it enhances the efficiency of healthcare delivery, allowing resources to be allocated more effectively and improving overall patient outcomes.
In summary, our solution impacts the lives of individuals affected by tremors by providing practical support, enhancing independence, reducing caregiver burden, empowering healthcare practitioners, and optimizing healthcare system efficiency. By addressing the specific needs of this population, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of millions worldwide who are affected by Parkinson's disease.
