At Pearl Medical, we are dedicated to addressing the pressing issue of inadequate medical waste management, particularly prevalent in low-resource communities and healthcare facilities across Sub-Saharan Africa. In these regions, improper disposal of medical waste poses significant health and environmental risks, contributing to the spread of diseases, contamination of water sources, and pollution of the environment.
The scale of the problem is substantial, with millions of tons of medical waste generated annually worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 16 billion injections are administered each year, resulting in a vast amount of potentially hazardous waste. In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, over 20 million healthcare workers are at risk of exposure to hazardous medical waste, with an estimated 85% of medical waste being improperly disposed of or inadequately treated.
Inadequate medical waste management disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including women, children, and individuals living in impoverished communities. Without proper disposal methods, medical waste can harbor infectious pathogens, leading to the spread of diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, and other communicable illnesses. Moreover, the indiscriminate dumping of medical waste contaminates soil and water sources, posing long-term health risks to communities and ecosystems.
The challenge is further exacerbated by limited infrastructure and resources in Sub-Saharan Africa, where only about 58% of healthcare facilities have access to basic water services, and only 28% have access to adequate sanitation services. As a result, healthcare facilities often resort to unsafe practices such as open burning, land filling, or dumping medical waste in open pits or water bodies, further exacerbating environmental pollution and health hazards.
At Pearl medical, we have carefully designed and created a comprehensive solution to the critical problem of medical waste management, consisting of two main components: the Pearl Medical App and the Eco-Friendly Pearl Incinerator.
The Pearl Medical App is a digital platform designed to streamline and optimize the entire process of medical waste management.
