Sexual and reproductive health is vital for overall well-being, spanning physical, mental, and social dimensions. In Rwanda, like elsewhere, youth confront significant sexual health challenges, necessitating effective intervention. While awareness of preventive measures exists, such as contraception and safe sex practices, there's a critical gap in comprehensive support for those facing sexual health issues.
Each year, an estimated 1.2 million adolescents die globally, largely from preventable causes like pregnancy complications, unsafe abortion, and STIs, including HIV/AIDS. The WHO notes that approximately 1 in 5 girls aged 15–19 worldwide experience physical and sexual violence from an intimate partner annually.
Among the most pressing issues for Rwandan youth is the prevalence of STIs, including HIV/AIDS. Although progress has been made in combating HIV/AIDS, with a decrease in prevalence from 3.0% in 2015 to 2.0% in 2019, young people aged 15–24 remain disproportionately affected, constituting 34% of new HIV infections in 2019. Unplanned pregnancies and abortions are significant challenges due to barriers like stigma, a lack of information, and limited resources. The adolescent birth rate stands at 52 births per 1,000 adolescent girls, highlighting the need for comprehensive sexual health education and support services.
Moreover, issues like sexual dysfunction, intimate partner violence, and harmful practices exacerbate challenges for Rwandan youth, leading to enduring emotional and psychological trauma.
Despite recognizing the importance of sexual health education and support services, a significant gap persists in delivering tailored interventions, particularly for young people. Factors contributing to this gap include limited access to confidential and youth-friendly services, cultural taboos, and a shortage of trained professionals in sexual health and counseling.
The initiative aims to address these challenges by creating a nurturing environment and offering preventive education and comprehensive support for youth navigating sexual health issues. Through a safe, private platform, individuals can access accurate information and receive counseling and therapy from trained professionals while connecting with peers facing similar challenges.
Strategic partnerships with organizations such as the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) aim to build trust and credibility within the community, ensuring that youth feel comfortable seeking support. Leveraging technology, including a USSD service for users without smartphones or internet access, enhances the reach and awareness of sexual health services across Rwanda.
In conclusion, the initiative targets specific challenges faced by Rwandan youth regarding sexual health, aiming to empower them to make informed decisions and access support when needed. By bridging the gap in sexual health education and support services, the initiative contributes to promoting overall well-being and resilience among Rwandan youth. Young individuals can lead healthier, more fulfilling lives with this holistic approach.

"Open. Safe House" has established a strategic partnership with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) to ensure credibility and trustworthiness. Through this collaboration, RIB serves as the initial point of contact for young individuals seeking support on sexual health issues. As users engage with the platform, RIB's endorsement lends credibility to our services, further encouraging individuals to seek help and support.
Regarding technology, "Open. Safe House" leverages secure communication channels and data encryption protocols to protect user privacy and confidentiality. The platform employs advanced security measures to safeguard sensitive information and ensure users feel safe and comfortable sharing their concerns.

By prioritizing inclusivity, privacy, and credibility, the platform empowers young individuals to navigate the complexities of their sexual health confidently and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Our team is uniquely positioned to design and deliver this solution due to our deep connections and proximity to the communities we aim to serve. Each team member brings personal experiences and insights that have shaped our understanding of the challenges surrounding sexual health in Rwanda.
Gitangaza Teta Marie Reine des Ages is a sexual health advocate who has been immersed in the community her entire life. Her passion for maternal, child, and community health stems from witnessing firsthand the struggles faced by friends and family members, particularly regarding issues like early pregnancy and abortion. Additionally, Gitangaza's personal experiences have deeply shaped her understanding of sexual health challenges. As a child, she was taken advantage of by housekeepers, experiencing exploitation in a context where discussions about sexual and reproductive health were taboo. This lack of education and support left her feeling isolated and unable to seek help. Her journey of realizing and grappling with this exploitation has fueled her commitment to providing accessible and supportive resources for others facing similar challenges. Her intimate knowledge of community dynamics and firsthand experiences inform our approach to designing and implementing effective solutions.
Kajyibwami Ghilain has lived in Nyamirabo, a neighborhood often called the "ghetto" in Kigali, Rwanda. Growing up in this area, he has witnessed the struggles of youth from unplanned or impoverished backgrounds. His connection to the community and understanding of their needs drive his commitment to addressing their challenges, including those related to sexual health.
Manzi Ntwali Jean Francois Regis is deeply interested in sexual and mental health and passionate about providing quality education to LGBTQ+ individuals. Through his experiences and advocacy work, he has gained insights into the unique challenges marginalized communities face in Rwanda. His dedication to educating, motivating, and advocating for sensitive issues aligns with our mission to provide inclusive and comprehensive sexual health support.
Our collective experiences and shared mission ensure that the design and implementation of our solution are meaningfully guided by input, ideas, and agendas from the communities we serve. We actively engage with community members through focus groups, surveys, and consultations to understand their needs, preferences, and challenges. Their insights shape our platform's features, content, and outreach strategies, ensuring that they resonate with and meet the needs of our target population. Solve can assist us in addressing cultural barriers by facilitating partnerships with local community leaders, organizations, and influencers who can advocate for openness and acceptance toward sexual health education and support services. This support can help us create culturally sensitive content and initiatives that resonate with our target population. Additionally, mentorship and collaboration with provincial and local leaders can provide valuable insights into community dynamics and preferences, enhancing the effectiveness of our approach.
