Youth Minds Connect addresses the pressing issue of youth mental health, a global challenge affecting millions of young individuals. According to the World Health Organization, half of all mental illnesses begin by the age of 14, and three-quarters by the age of 24. In low- and middle-income countries, up to 85% of young people with mental health issues do not receive the care they need. Factors contributing to this problem include stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to mental health resources. Youth Minds Connect aims to create a supportive digital platform to bridge these gaps and provide youth with the resources and community support they need for better mental well-being.
Youth Minds Connect is designed to address the multifaceted challenges faced by young individuals regarding mental health. These challenges include a lack of understanding and acceptance of mental health issues, limited access to mental health services, and societal stigmas that prevent many from seeking help.
Globally, the impact of mental health issues on youth is significant. Depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents, and suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15-19-year-olds. In addition, many young people face stress and anxiety due to academic pressures, social challenges, and economic uncertainties.
Youth Minds Connect seeks to empower young people by providing them with a safe space where they can access information, share their experiences, and receive support from peers and mental health professionals. As the Founder and CEO of 21st Generation, I have a personal connection to the challenges young people face with mental health. Having grown up in Africa, I have witnessed firsthand the stigma surrounding mental health in many communities and the lack of access to resources and support. We have started the development of this platform and are in the middle of raising awareness of the Youth Minds Connect platform, which is currently in the prototype stage. The platform is undergoing initial testing with a small group of users to gather feedback and improve functionality. We have served approximately 100 users, primarily young individuals seeking mental health support and resources. Through this testing phase, we have refined the platform's features and user interface based on user feedback, ensuring that it meets the needs of our target audience.

We have been working on the project for 4 years (2020 - 2024) now.
