Spring Pool Glass -W Glass Project
Spring Pool Glass recovers 100,000 tons of waste glass from around Taiwan each year, which accounts for more than 50%-70% of Taiwan's waste glass. Every year, the company reduces the use of silica sand by 70,000 tons, lowering carbon emissions by 168 million kgs.Recently, Spring Pool Glass and Spring Pool Glass has been continuously developing new recycling technology in line with its environmental awareness. Following the growing popularity of computers, communications, and consumer electronics (3C) products, Spring Pool Glass found that significant amounts of waste from LCD screens needed to be recycled and re-used, so began research and development into related technologies. It has since succeeded in processing waste LCD screens into "energy-saving bricks" that are lightweight, highly heat resistant and have excellent sound insulation. And It has been highlighted in "Discovery Channel" in 2017.
We hope to apply Taiwan Successful Circular Economy Model and Sustainable Business Strategy to the United States and other countries. In terms of glass recycling rate, Taiwan = 90%, and United States = 33%. Glass recycling rate represents the bottleneck of the overall recycling rate because recycling glass is low-profit business and lack of economy driving. The supply chain overall cost must be efficient and as low as possible. Considering the cost of the recycling process and supply chain management, upcycling innovation is necessary to improve the low glass recycling rate of U.S.
From the demand side, Spring Pool Glass is providing recycled materials to manufacturing firms in different industries such as ceramics, asphalt, cement, and glass manufacturing. Glass manufacturers have great incentives to buy recycled materials from Spring Pool Glass due to the subsidies they can receive by participating in the four-in-one resource recycling project. At the same time, Spring Pool Glass is also selling products directly to end customers. It produces three main products from its recycled glass: (1) artistic glass manufactured in its industrial tourism factory, (2) 'glass beans' used for paving roads and walls, and (3) 'insulation blocks' used as a construction material.

Since Spring Pool Glass is the leading firm in the glass-recycling ecosystem in Taiwan, there are mechanisms that govern its ecosystem, involving different stakeholders. From the supply side, Spring Pool Glass collects waste glass from households and industrial manufacturing. The household waste glass comes from two channels: first, the cleaning team and recyclers in collaboration with the government (the four-in-one resource recycling project), and second its long-term collaboration with individual recyclers. In the case of industrial glass waste, Spring Pool Glass collects from LCD factories and glass manufacturers. The main reasons these big factories are willing to provide waste glass to Spring Pool Glass are (1) it pays an adequate price, (2) the large amount of land and technology required to deal with industrial glass waste, and (3) Spring Pool Glass's long-standing good reputation and its CSR campaign promoted through its industrial tourism factory.

The processes involved in the recycling of glass begin with sorting by color, sorting by chemical composition, removal of impurities and washing before going through crushing, pulverizing, grinding and sizing before waste glass is converted into cullets. In the past, most of the waste glass came from various containers but the rapid advancement of technologies and 3C products led to the production and use of panel glasses for tablet PCs and smart phones. The processing and recycling methods involved for such panels are distinctively different from that of traditional glass.
As Spring Pool collected massive quantities of waste glass panels, the company soon came to the realization that due to the addition of aluminum oxide, the panels are harder to re-melt and this rendered the existing processes for normal glass recycling at the factory useless. Meanwhile, the quantity of waste glass panels sent to Spring Pool continued to grow and the company actually had as much as 40,000 tons of glass panels waiting to be processed. With the company’s money literally tied up in mounds after mounds of waste glass panels, Spring Pool was looking at an inevitable and dire crisis of cash flow.
The new construction material by using LCD glass, we created offer the distinctive feature of heat resistance and it has received relevant fire rating testing certifications in England and Singapore. Each slab of the insulation block only weighs 12.5% compared to the standard cement/clay brick and yet costs less than 1/10 the price of clay bricks.
The APP recycling system features a platform of communication with consumers. It involves the deployment of a glass bottle/ container recycling machine that is capable of handling different materials. The software and hardware needed for this solution will be provided by external developers and Spring Pool has chosen the PX Mart franchise in Hsinchu City. “Turn container recycling into consumption” is the idea behind the project and with the machine, shoppers will be able to go to the store and feed their empty containers into the machine to redeem for points using the companion App and exchange for selected products. During the experimental phase, the recorded collection volume fell between 100- 300 containers but as the official launch of the project coincided with the fad of toilet paper hoarding, the machine ended up processing between 1000-3000 containers per day, which is at its maximum capacity. Since the profit margin for glass recycling is fairly low, glass has never been a key resource for private recycling service providers and usually only the local public cleaning squads would accept glass containers for recycling.
