Cuida Bien, Care Well

- Nonprofit
Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are aging at an accelerated rate. In the region, there are 8 million older people with dependencies, and this number is estimated to rise to 27 million by 2050. Some countries have developed public policies to meet the care demands of this population, but their reach falls far short of being universal. Thus, the task often falls on families, particularly on women who "take care" of these needs with limited knowledge. Only a minority of families are able to outsource care through hiring personnel, generally unqualified women who work in informal conditions. The consequences of this situation include not only a low quality of care provided but also an overload of physical, emotional, and economic stress on both family and paid caregivers.
Stigma and marginalization play a significant role in shaping societal attitudes towards caregiving, particularly within the context of informal care provided by family members, where the work is often undervalued and overlooked. Caregivers, predominantly women, frequently encounter societal expectations that diminish the importance of their caregiving role, leading to feelings of isolation, inadequacy, and invisibility. This stigma not only undermines the recognition of caregiving as a vital societal contribution but also contributes to the marginalization of caregivers, limiting their access to support networks and resources.
Many caregivers, lacking access to training, information, and support services, are ill-equipped to navigate the complexities of providing care to elderly individuals with diverse needs. The absence of educational programs and practical resources further exacerbates caregiver stress and burnout, diminishing the quality of care provided to elderly individuals. Moreover, the unequal distribution of care responsibilities within families and communities perpetuates existing gender inequalities, as women disproportionately shoulder the burden of caregiving duties due to entrenched societal norms and expectations. This unequal distribution not only places a disproportionate burden on women but also limits their opportunities for economic and social advancement, perpetuating cycles of poverty and marginalization.
In Argentina, 93% of care tasks fall on family members, predominantly women - and the lack of training for over a million caregivers in Argentina according to the study carried out by the Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA) in 2018, not only have consequences within the family environment but also significantly impact individuals' professional spheres. The burden of unpaid caregiving responsibilities can result in limitations to professional development, reduced employment opportunities, and, in many cases, the interruption of career paths. Cuida Bien not only addresses the need for caregiver training but also contributes to the creation of more equitable work environments, where shared caregiving responsibilities enable unhindered professional development and more equal participation.
According to our survey carried out in 2021, many caregivers, particularly family members, lack access to resources and education to help them effectively care for elderly loved ones. They feel unprepared to handle the physical, emotional, and logistical challenges associated with caregiving, leading to stress, burnout, and reduced quality of care for the elderly. That's why we created Cuida Bien.
To respond to the lack of resources and support network, our pioneer platform provides a free virtual training with the aim of providing caregivers and family members with the essential knowledge and tools to enhance quality of care for the elderly, including self-care.
At the core of the platform is an 8-module virtual course comprising audiovisual content, aimed at enhancing caregiving skills and promoting self-care. In addition to the course, our platform features a blog with multimedia capsules addressing common queries. We also maintain diverse communication channels, including the website, Facebook, newsletter and Instagram and YouTube, ensuring free access and enabling asynchronous engagement and follow-up.
It is important to state that our modules are co-created with our partners who provide the academic endorsement in our content. In particular, regarding the first aid knowledge, where Fundación Emergencias’ specialists are featured in the course videos and participate in the program’s frequent synchronous virtual panels throughout the year. Moreover, FUndación Emergencias also contribute to generating content for social media.
One of the key features of Cuida Bien is its focus on accessibility and inclusivity. We offer free access to our platform through various communication channels, including our website, social media platforms (such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube), and newsletters. This ensures that caregivers from diverse backgrounds and regions can benefit from our program, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location.
Cuida Bien also collaborates with reputable organizations and institutions to enhance the quality and credibility of our program. For example, we have established partnerships with Fundación Emergencias and Universidad iSalud, which provide financial support, academic endorsement, and expert participation in our workshops and virtual talks.
Through these initiatives, Cuida Bien aims to address the systemic challenges facing caregivers in Argentina, including the lack of resources, stigma, and unequal distribution of care responsibilities. By empowering caregivers with knowledge, skills, and support, we strive to improve the quality of care provided to elderly individuals, enhance the well-being of caregivers, and promote a more equitable and dignified approach to caregiving in the region.
Caregivers and family members that care for their elderly relatives. These individuals are in majority women, around the ages 35 to +55 years *millennials and baby boomers) and dedicate more than 9 hours daily to care tasks. This community is subject to stigma and marginalization and is constantly undervalued. In addition to the growing feminization and the unequal distribution of caretasks impacting negatively on women.
The elderly community who receive care are +80 years and generally are conditioned to types of dependence, in majority cognitive deterrence and/or motor dependencies.

We are at the growth stage because we have successfully developed and implemented our solution, Cuida Bien, and have seen significant traction and impact in the communities we serve. Since its inception, we have seen a doubling in the number of participants engaging in our capacity-building workshops and accessing resources on our platform. These results demonstrate the increasing demand for our services and the effectiveness of our approach in meeting the needs of caregivers and family members.
Furthermore, the outcomes we have achieved in the past two years strengthen the potential for scalability of the program at both the federal and regional levels. Through rigorous evaluations and feedback from users, we have observed positive outcomes, including improved caregiving skills, increased confidence and self-efficacy among caregivers, reduced feelings of isolation, and enhanced well-being for both caregivers and elderly individuals. These results underscore the effectiveness of our solution and the opportunity to expand our reach to serve more caregivers and families across Latin America and the Caribbean.
Additionally, we have spearheaded the creation of the Innovation Forum in care policies, which brings together over 20 organizations and institutions to discuss and exchange experiences regarding care services. This forum serves as a platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and collective problem-solving, further amplifying the impact of our efforts and fostering a supportive ecosystem for caregivers and care services in the region.
We are applying to MIT Solve to enhance our Cuida Bien platform, particularly focusing on overcoming financial constraints and scaling our technological capabilities. With the support of MIT Solve, we aim to develop and integrate advanced features such as a sophisticated chatbot already in the pilot phase to improve user engagement and efficiency. This chatbot will enable real-time, personalized support for caregivers, addressing common queries and offering guidance, thus enhancing the user experience significantly. Joining the Solver community would provide us access to resources, mentorship, and networks that can help expand our reach and impact, making our services more accessible to caregivers across Argentina. This partnership would enable us to leverage non-monetary support to refine our technological tools, increase our program's sustainability, and ensure our solutions are scalable and impactful.

Our solution, Cuida Bien, stands out for its innovative approach to addressing the deep-rooted issues within caregiving through an advanced digital platform. Traditional caregiving, especially in informal settings, has lacked systematic support and recognition, leading to significant burdens on caregivers. Cuida Bien changes this landscape by providing a comprehensive virtual training program and a highly interactive chatbot service. This platform offers free, accessible education and support to caregivers, enhancing their skills and well-being.
The integration of a sophisticated chatbot is particularly groundbreaking. This tool provides instant, personalized responses to caregiver inquiries, ranging from daily caregiving challenges to mental health support. It is designed to decrease the sense of isolation many caregivers feel by providing a constant, accessible source of guidance and connection.
Moreover, our solution empowers caregivers through an 8-module course that covers essential caregiving aspects, including first aid, mental health, and the physical handling of the elderly, combined with self-care practices for caregivers themselves. The content is co-created with healthcare professionals and academic partners, ensuring its relevance and scientific accuracy.
Cuida Bien’s model is scalable and adaptable, making it suitable for different cultural and socioeconomic contexts within Latin America and the Caribbean. By improving caregiver support on such a broad scale, we aim to catalyze a shift in how caregiving is perceived and executed globally. The expected impact includes reduced caregiver burnout, improved health outcomes for the elderly, and the promotion of caregiving as a respected and valued profession.
This solution not only improves individual lives but also has the potential to influence the broader market by setting a new standard for caregiver support. Other organizations might be inspired to create similar platforms, leading to a more widespread improvement in caregiver resources and recognition. In doing so, Cuida Bien could fundamentally transform the caregiving landscape, making it more sustainable and dignified for all involved.
Our theory of change is straightforward: by providing caregivers and family members with the knowledge, skills, and support they need, we expect to improve the quality of care for elderly individuals while also enhancing the well-being of caregivers themselves.
Here's how it works:
Education and Skills Building: Through our capacity-building workshops and virtual course, caregivers learn practical caregiving skills, such as medication management, personal care techniques, and emotional support strategies. This empowers them to provide higher quality care to elderly individuals, addressing their physical and emotional needs more effectively.
Stress Reduction and Self-Care: By equipping caregivers with tools for self-care and stress management, we aim to reduce caregiver burnout and improve their overall well-being. When caregivers are better able to manage their own physical and emotional health, they can provide more consistent and compassionate care to elderly individuals.
Community and Support: Our platform fosters a sense of community among caregivers, providing a space for them to connect, share experiences, and access peer support. This reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness among caregivers, while also creating opportunities for mutual learning and encouragement.
Dignifying Care Work: By recognizing caregiving as a fundamental right and dignifying care work, we aim to challenge societal stigmas and norms that devalue caregiving. This not only improves the status and recognition of caregivers but also encourages broader societal support for caregiving as an essential and respected role.
Overall, we expect that by addressing the needs of caregivers and promoting the value of care work, our solution will lead to improved outcomes for both caregivers and the elderly individuals they care for, creating a positive ripple effect throughout families and communities.
Our impact goals for the Cuida Bien solution are to significantly enhance the well-being of caregivers and elevate the quality of care provided to the elderly. Specifically, we aim to:
Achieve a measurable reduction in caregiver stress and burnout through targeted support and resources.
Increase caregiver knowledge and skills through comprehensive training modules, improving their ability to manage caregiving tasks effectively.
Enhance engagement and continuous learning by monitoring user interactions with our platform and content updates.
To measure these impacts, we utilize a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods:
Pre- and post-training assessments to directly measure improvements in caregiver knowledge and skills.
Regular caregiver feedback surveys to evaluate changes in stress levels and overall satisfaction with the caregiving role.
Engagement metrics on our platform, such as session duration and repeat logins, to gauge the effectiveness of our materials and the platform’s usability.
These metrics help us refine our approach and ensure we are making a tangible difference in the caregiving community.
