In 2023, 67% of RAM patients reported having no dental insurance compared to 27% nationwide (CareQuest Institute for Oral Health), highlighting the significant gap in dental care access within underserved communities. A study by the National Institutes of Health underscores the far-reaching impact of poor oral health on overall well-being, with dental issues linked to various health complications, such as substantial nutritional challenges, weight fluctuations, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, and decreased quality of life.
Access to dental healthcare is often hindered by geographical and financial obstacles, amplifying the challenges faced by those grappling with tooth loss. Traditional denture-making methods, known for their time-consuming and costly nature, pose further barriers, especially for uninsured, underinsured, and underserved populations, like those served by Remote Area Medical.
In response, RAM’s introduction of a mobile digital denture program signifies a pivotal advancement in addressing these challenges. By harnessing 3D printing technology and high quality materials, RAM can offer expedited delivery of top-quality dentures, circumventing logistical hurdles for our patients and providing dentures with superior customization, durability, and fit. This initiative aims to drastically reduce the wait time for denture patients, offering same-day solutions compared to the weeks-long process typical of conventional denture production. By providing efficient and high-quality denture services, RAM seeks to restore not only smiles, but also improve nutrition and overall health outcomes for patients.
Another noteworthy feature of the mobile digital denture program is the streamlined denture replacement process. Unlike conventional methods requiring multiple appointments and weeks-long wait times, RAM’s digital dental files can be stored for up to 11 years, facilitating a replacement set upon request. With this life-changing innovation, a patient can be assured of the ability to eat comfortably, speak clearly, and smile confidently for years to come, underscoring RAM’s ongoing commitment to accessible dental care and addressing the oral health needs of underserved communities.

This innovative approach not only addresses accessibility issues, but also optimizes efficiency, allowing us to serve a larger number of patients within a shorter timeframe compared to our conventional denture program. By using digital denture technology and adopting a mobile service model, RAM strives to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of its dental care initiatives, ultimately improving the quality of life for individuals in need of denture services.
Tooth loss presents a significant concern across the country, particularly among vulnerable demographics, such as the elderly and the socioeconomically disadvantaged. Current data from reputable sources including the Simmons National Consumer Survey, the U.S. Census, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) underscore the widespread impact of tooth loss on millions of Americans. Notably, older adults grappling with poverty, limited education, or tobacco usage, are disproportionately affected, being more than three times more likely to experience complete tooth loss.
However, tooth loss is not confined to any specific age group, often stemming from inadequate oral hygiene, periodontal disease, or physical injury for younger demographics. Genetic predispositions and underlying health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease also increase the risk of severe tooth loss.
Remote Area Medical ® (RAM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing pain and alleviating suffering by providing free, quality healthcare to those in need through the operation of mobile pop-up clinics. Established in 1985, RAM envisions an America where healthcare is accessible to all, regardless of location or ability to pay. Since its founding, RAM has served over 940,000 individuals, offering over $200 million in free dental, vision, and medical services.
Building on RAM’s 39-year legacy of offering free dental, vision, and medical services, the initiative prioritizes community engagement. In partnerships with Community Host Groups throughout the U.S., the mobile digital denture unit will target populations identified by their communities as having barriers to oral healthcare, ensuring maximum impact.

RAM has invested $424,167 of its own funds toward the purchase and customization of the mobile digital denture unit. We have acquired and are customizing the mobile RV unit, a Digital Denture Technician (CAD-CAM operator) and Program Manager have been hired, RAM volunteers and NOVA Southeastern pre-professional students are being trained to operate this specific service area at our clinics, and materials of the highest quality are being tested in the prototype unit as we perfect the processes and workflows.
Because our mobile clinics are in a community for 1-5 days, and the patients we serve are often socioeconomically challenged and may have transportation issues, we have a limited time to identify eligible patients and provide them with dentures. We do not want to sacrifice quality, due to those constraints. As we perfect the methods and workflows for printing the digital dentures, we want to be sure we are offering the highest quality and most durable dentures to our patients in one day.
RAM hopes to have the first mobile unit perfected and operational by the end of 2024. Currently, RAM can conduct three simultaneous full-scale clinics offering dental, vision, and medical services in locations across the country each weekend. Our goal in five to 15 years is to have a mobile digital denture unit available for each clinic event.

Same-day dentures of the highest quality, made accessible by bringing the dentures directly to a patient experiencing socioeconomic or geographical issues, will be a unique offering from RAM when it is available.
The Oral Health and Wellness Tour, a joint venture between Haleon/Walmart and Remote Area Medical, introduces a pioneering approach to addressing denture needs across the nation. By deploying a mobile 3-chair dental operatory alongside our new mobile digital denture unit, this initiative seeks to provide convenient, walk-in clinic access to essential oral healthcare services at Walmart locations throughout the country.
Collaborating with NOVA Southeastern University College of Dentistry to train pre-professional students in RAM’s digital dentistry program ensures the delivery of top tier patient care. Once trained, these pre-professional volunteers will contribute their expertise to RAM’s digital denture program at clinic events across America, enhancing the quality of services provided to individuals in need, enhancing their medical education.

RAM's mobile digital denture program utilizes 3-D printing technology. Our specially customized vehicle will house the 3-D printers and milling machines for use in conjunction with our panoramic x-ray vehicle. We will travel into remote and urban communities where a need has been identified, and offer patients without teeth the option to eat comfortably, speak clearly, and smile beautifully within a matter of hours, restoring their dignity and impacting their overall health. This change is life-altering for many patients.

Our Board of Directors is comprised of nine white males, one white female, one African-American male, and two African-American females. At the moment, our senior leadership is two white males.Established in 1985, with a mission to prevent pain and alleviate suffering, Remote Area Medical (RAM®) provides free, quality healthcare to those in need through the operation of mobile pop-up clinics offering dental, vision, and medical services to the uninsured, underinsured, and underserved.
Since its inception, RAM has benefitted from the dedication of more than 210,000 volunteers who have collectively treated nearly 940,000 patients, delivering free healthcare services valued at over $200,230,000 million. RAM is also supported by a modest staff of 64 based at its headquarters in Rockford, Tennessee.
In 2023, we served 29,899 patients with free care valued at over $10,750,000 through the dedication of more than 16,633 volunteers.

We receive no payments from patients or taxpayers, and no federal funding. All our programs and innovations, as well as our day-to-day operating expenses, are funded by individual donors, awards, grants from foundations, and corporate sponsors.
