When patients with PAD (peripheral artery disease) finally get to the clinic, without any vascular screening, and after being misdiagnosed with orthopedic or neurological problems in the past, they need to be diagnosed precisely and rapidly, given the severity of the condition and the limited bandwidth of the specialists.
However non-invasive options like ABI (ankle-brachial index) / toe-brachial index (TBI) and Doppler ultrasound take quite some time and are very dependent on the specific experience of the examining specialist and oftentimes unreliable, even more for patients with diabetes.
The x-ray angiography on the other end of the spectrum is very invasive, requires the injection of a contrast agent and several hours of radiation.
And it’s typical that the patients are hospitalized at least for a day if they need to undergo an angiography.
Kelvin Health's mission is to make preventable deaths and suffering from conditions like limb ischemia, even more for patients with diabetes, a thing of the past. We use the power of mobile thermography coupled with AI to transform the standard of vascular care and empower early screening and efficient non-invasive diagnostics.
Kelvin Health is diagnostic solution as simple and patient-friendly as the specialist, or the GP, or even the patient’s partner taking a thermal image of them. Using a thermal camera we can capture the heat of the body, detect local blood flow anomalies and notify the doctor if needed.
Our software can segment the arterial zones of the legs automatically, as well as the blood supply zones in the head potentially related to ischemic stroke. We can also perform automated analysis of blood profusion problems in the different arterial zones of both legs of the patients.
More than 230 million people worldwide suffer from PAD and because of the hard access to precise diagnostics each year above 20 million people, more than the population of Florida or the average population of a whole European country, develop CLI (critical limb ischemia). Condition that first takes your limb, then kills you in less than five years in almost half of the cases.
Patients with diabetes have very high chance of developing CVD (cardiovascular disease) and incidents, including PAD and ischemic stroke, and more than half of the mortality in these patients is because of CVD.
Ironically they are among the most exposed to severe complications like amputation and at the same time the hardest to diagnose because of their typical medial arterial calcification (MAC) and higher tolerance to pain.
Certain ethnicities and residents of remote or underdeveloped regions who have diabetes are even more exposed to limb- & life-threatening complications.
Unlike the time-consuming and imprecise ankle-brachial index (ABI) and Doppler ultrasound examination methods, our technology enables non-specialist to perform rapid and precise vascular triage and save limbs and lives, also preventing unneeded invasive X-ray angiographies.
There are a few companies - Niramai, Thermo Human, USATHERM - applying modern thermography for medical or wellness purposes but none of them are currently supporting a socially significant disease diagnostics in an AI-driven automated way. We have created the world’s largest cardiovascular disease (CVD) thermal imaging dataset (as of February 2024) containing 8,600+ thermal images of 1,100+ patients and trained very precise PAD detection ML models achieving above 96% in both sensitivity and specificity.

We have conducted an observational study with more than 1,200 patients, containing more than 9,000 thermograms, and witnessed very high sensitivity and specificity of our method, and a lot of vascular specialists excited about the immediate impact Kelvin Health demonstrates even currently during its research phase.
Three months ago we also started conducting interviews with various healthcare professionals here in the U.S., and witnessed that there is a concordance in their opinion about applications also by podiatrists, and in primary care, especially for risk groups like patients with diabetes, smokers, people with obesity or family history. As well as in cases were the need to diagnose rapidly is vital, such as ER.
We want to address equitable access to vascular care and diagnostics in remote and underdeveloped regions, who also lack access to specialists and invasive examination methods.
