In Burkina Faso, there is a shortage of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, or social workers. Consequently, people turn to alternative methods such as sorcery, exorcism, astrological remedies, or religious ceremonies. This situation has been exacerbated by terrorist attacks. According to OCHA ,over 2 million internally displaced persons in 2023 60.4% of whom are children and 22.89% are women.

Several regions experience significant disruption due to the effects of terrorism. For example, the Sahel region has approximately 502,000 displaced persons, the Central North with 494,000 displaced, the North with 256,000, the East with 220,000, the Boucle du Mouhoun with 134,000, the Southwest with 96,000, the Hauts Bassins with 86,000, the Center-East with 66,000, the Center with 60,000, the Center-West with 56,000, the Central Plateau with 55,000, the Cascades with 27,000, and the South-Center with 10,000. These individuals face increased levels of psychosocial disorders, poor mental health conditions in a context of precarious living conditions, disrupted social fabric, and inadequate access to essential services.
Given this ticking time bomb, our project aimed at addressing the mental health of internally displaced women and children in their host communities lies in promoting a healthier and more resilient society. By addressing the mental health issues of these populations, we contribute to mitigating social tensions, strengthening community bonds, and fostering better social cohesion. This will also lead to an improvement in future education, as mentally healthy individuals are more likely to actively engage in learning and succeed academically.
As a solution, we propose addressing the mental health of internally displaced women and children through a virtual reality application.
Within the context of internally displaced persons, mental health is a critical concern. The emotions they experience are often difficult to articulate, especially among children. However, technological advancements have widened the possibilities for visual expression. The use of virtual reality offers new perspectives for addressing trauma and mental disorders in these children, enabling innovative and accessible therapeutic methods.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the most commonly adapted intervention to ensure holistic care management. Through virtual reality connected to an artificial intelligence model integrated into the virtual patient management platform, field-based humanitarian case managers provide contextual advice to children and women to enhance their understanding of potential causes of their mental state. Psychosocial support groups, often referred to as "expression groups," are then organized by mental health experts to reinforce the supportive role of children/women in managing their issues and to teach coping strategies and skills for handling emotionally challenging situations.
The virtual reality platform will be utilized to improve communication and information exchange with displaced persons and case managers. The interface will enable case managers to remotely monitor the symptoms of displaced persons and adherence to treatment plans via tablets, documenting them in the care plan and interventions. Virtual reality and artificial intelligence will be the primary instruments used to address the demand/need/supply identified by healthcare professionals.
The proposed solution serves internally displaced women and children, a population often overlooked in terms of mental health support. These individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, natural disasters, or other crises, and they often face significant challenges, including trauma, loss, and displacement.
Internally displaced persons (IDPs) typically lack access to adequate mental health resources and support systems. They may struggle to articulate their emotions, especially children, and face barriers to receiving traditional forms of therapy due to their displacement and the often chaotic environments in which they find themselves.
The solution aims to directly address these challenges by leveraging virtual reality technology and artificial intelligence to provide innovative and accessible mental health support. By offering a virtual reality application tailored to their needs, IDPs can engage in therapeutic activities that help them process trauma, manage stress, and build coping skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Moreover, the solution incorporates cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, which are known to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions. Through virtual reality sessions and psychosocial support groups facilitated by mental health experts, IDPs can receive personalized guidance and learn practical strategies for addressing their emotional challenges.
By improving access to mental health care and providing targeted support for internally displaced women and children, the solution aims to enhance their overall well-being and resilience in the face of adversity. It empowers them to take control of their mental health and equips them with the tools they need to navigate the complex and often traumatic experiences associated with displacement. Ultimately, the solution seeks to foster healing, restore dignity, and promote a sense of hope and agency among those most affected by displacement.
