FriendnPal addresses the critical mental health challenges prevalent in Africa, where over a hundred million people are affected by at least one mental health condition, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite this staggering number, only 1% of the healthcare budget is dedicated to mental health in Africa, exacerbating the lack of access to mental healthcare services. Africa has the highest prevalence of mental health disorders globally, with an estimated 30% of its population affected. Factors contributing to this problem include inadequate infrastructure, shortage of mental health professionals, and cultural taboos surrounding mental illness. This issue is further compounded by the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health, leading to a reluctance to seek help and discuss these issues openly, contributing to the loss of lives, such as my mother's tragic experience with depression.
Drawing from my personal experience in Nigeria and Benin Republic, where discussions on mental health were taboo and hidden, FriendnPal aims to break the silence and stigma surrounding mental health, providing accessible and culturally sensitive mental health support to individuals and communities across Africa.
In Nigeria alone, more than 20 million people suffer from various mental health troubles, yet between 75% and 95% of individuals in low and middle-income countries like Nigeria lack access to necessary mental healthcare services due to stigma and limited resources. The rampant stigmatization of people with mental health conditions exacerbates this issue, creating a challenging environment for those in need of support.
Our solution, FriendnPal, leverages technology to provide accessible mental health support tailored to the cultural and societal context of communities in Africa, addressing the barriers of stigma, accessibility, and destigmatizing conversations surrounding mental health in Africa and beyond. By offering an AI-powered multilingual mental health app that offers personalized support, therapy sessions, and resources tailored to users' cultural context, FriendnPal aims to reach millions of individuals across Africa and beyond, providing them with the support they need to prioritize their mental well-being and lead fulfilling lives.
Through strategic partnerships and innovative technology, we believe we can make a significant impact in addressing the mental health crisis in Africa.

Growing up in Nigeria and Benin Republic, I witnessed the stigma and lack of resources surrounding mental health, igniting my passion to address these issues through FriendnPal.
