The introduction of electric buses into the Kenyan PSV sector represents a major transformation and opportunity. However, electric buses also represent a brand new technology for drivers and operators. Operators are a key stakeholder in the PSV ecosystem. Because an electric vehicle is highly sensitive to driving behavior, maximizing value from an electric bus requires training drivers into a new mindset and skillset. Currently, there is a lack of EV specific, formal training programs with credible certification for public transport operators. Because electric drive technology is new to PSV operators and drivers in Kenya and East Africa as a whole, there is a need to develop a driver training and education program which will help drivers and operators optimize the value of an electric bus, through effective operation and service delivery, thus increasing the adoption of electric bus technology.
Through this project, there is an opportunity to create a tailored training and accreditation program for PSV operators in Kenya that improves passenger safety and experience while also helping drivers get the most of this technology transformation. Furthermore, due to the dynamic nature of electric buses, bus performance is very dependent on driving behavior, and studies have show that rapid accelerations and braking drain the battery faster, reducing range. In the Nairobi PSV ecosystem, reduced range directly affects a driver’s ability to earn revenue in operation. As a result, electric buses present a unique opportunity to train drivers in gentler driving which is both safer and more comfortable for passengers, while also improving efficiency and revenue potential.

Our solution is innovative in its comprehensive approach to operator training, which includes technical skills on handling electric buses, customer service, and inclusive practices. This training is specially designed to include gender sensitization and disability inclusion, areas often overlooked in similar initiatives. By empowering operators with this knowledge, we not only improve the immediate service delivery of our transport system but also contribute to broader social change within the community.
The design of the training anticipates replication and scalability, crucial for broad-scale impact. The combination of high renewable energy utilization and comprehensive training creates a model that can be adapted and replicated in other African cities with similar transit and energy profiles. This potential for scalability means that our innovative solution could catalyze a region-wide transformation in public transportation, making it cleaner and more inclusive. By addressing both the technological and human components of public transit, our solution sets a new standard for how cities in developing countries can approach modernization of public transport systems—making them not only environmentally sustainable but also socially inclusive and economically viable.
Our project's impact is rooted in community involvement and empowerment. We are dedicated to creating inclusive job opportunities, particularly for youth and women, in operating and maintaining electric vehicles. Training programs are tailored to build capacity and ensure that these roles are well-supported within the community. Beyond employment, our project seeks to enhance the overall quality of life by reducing noise and air pollution, making urban environments healthier places to live. We will continue collaborating with local companies to ensure that our initiatives align with community needs and contribute positively to social fabric and cohesion. Economically, our focus is on creating a self-sustaining model that not only covers operational costs but also generates profit, which can be reinvested into scaling the project. Furthermore, as our project proves successful in Nairobi, we plan to replicate the model in other cities within Kenya and eventually in other East African countries. This expansion will not only increase our economic footprint but also reinforce the viability of electric vehicles as a profitable and environmentally friendly alternative in emerging markets.
Our inclusive training programs aim to increase the participation of women in the transport sector. We will measure this by the number of women trained and employed as a result of our program, aiming for a 20% increase in their representation over five years. Economically, we aim to create at least 100 new jobs through our electric bus initiative, focusing on roles in bus operation, maintenance, and administration and service delivery. This will not only provide employment but also build local capacity in green technology. Additionally, our project is expected to reduce operational costs for public transport operators by decreasing fuel and maintenance expenses.
