Digital patrol
- Uganda
- Nonprofit
We wish to solve issues related to online harassment that sometimes go unattended to due to the self-stigma and fear of being persecuted under the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023. We also wish to bridge a gap between service delivery where there is a break around psychosocial support and access to a digital lab to help people physically to report, block, and capture evidence of perpetrators of online violence. There are also a number of grassroots organizations starting with the LGBTQI+ community and also within the already existing one learning never ends, digital security is a practice that requires constant checking and practice and as a result we wish to be a center where people within the LGBTQI+ community can walk in to get free assistance about their digital security concerns including computer hardware and software related services.
Setting up like a digital patrol, like a center that that records online violence cases, advises clients on what to do and how to go about digital violence in both legal and social terms, provide psychosocial support, and train on digital tips and actual digital work out on things to do with installation of antivirus installation and other software, hardware servicing and general advice about digital machinery, network human rights defenders them with legal resources where they can sue perpetrators. The activities will involve:
To set up a digital patrol station with a digital lab equipped with all the machinery required to ensure that computer hardware of all computers works appropriately and ensure data connectivity to ensure 24/7 to ensure that we have the capacity to deal with all computer related software.
We shall hire a computer expert of digital security expert if need arises, we can enroll 2, one for hard war and the other on software, for part-tie for the start as funds might assist.
We shall also do periodic reporting on the cases requested and how we have been able to assist them,
We have a wellness center and a psychologist who we shall also attach to this project to offer psychosocial support to the defenders and victims of online violence.
We shall also offer legal first-aid assistance and also refer those that need further to the different partners such as HRAPF.
We can need to procure things such as powerful a computers, cameras to ensure security of our premises as well.
We shall also be able to keep our digital platforms active 24/7 to ensure we don’t miss out on any cases or reports from our target population. With the knowledge we attained in our safe sisters training, we shall ensure to also have check-ins where we call people from our target population and assess their computers, make updates and teach them how to make updates as well as give them more digital security advise basing on their challenges.
The target population is the LGBTQI+ community of Uganda. Online harassment is turning to a normalcy for queer persons in Uganda and if it goes unattended may lead to self-stigma and mental health related challenges. The current fear of being persecuted under the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 is a great setback to the reporting of online violence. We also wish to bridge a gap between service delivery where there is a break around psychosocial support and access to a digital lab to help queer people physically to report, block, and capture evidence of perpetrators of online violence. The intend objectives of this solution are:
- To report, document, and respond to all forms of online violence to ensure that perpetrators are brought to books and build the confidence if LGBTQI persons in reporting these injustices.
- To provide holistic support to victims and human rights defenders who face online violence to ensure their holistic healing
- To create a digital lab for all digital related services required by LGBTQI persons
The team leader is a Queer person and team members are queer persons living in Uganda. In addition, all the team members are digital trainers from the Safe Sisters and Tech Sisters Alumni. The team also has a professional psychologists to provide psychosocial support for the victims. We also have a certified Human Resource Manager and Accountant with clear policies in place to ensure the successful implementation of the project and or solution activities.
All our projects are beneficiary based and intended to address immediate needs of the communities. This project in particular is informed by the ongoing online violence of queer persons and HRD prior to the popularisation of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 and its compromise of the rights of queer people
