Service workers, constituting a significant portion of the 80% global deskless workforce, are critically underserved in terms of vocational training and career advancement opportunities. Despite their essential roles in sectors like healthcare, education, social services, and hospitality, these workers face substantial barriers that restrict their professional development and economic stability.
Scale of the Problem:
Globally, the challenges faced by service workers are severe and widespread:
- Skill Development and Training: 46% of deskless workers report inadequate opportunities to acquire new skills, while 48% see limited career progression prospects (BCG, 2022). This is exacerbated by the predominance of training platforms that cater primarily to desk-bound professionals, leaving service workers with few viable options to enhance their competencies.
- Labor Shortages: Particularly in developed countries like the US and the UK, there is a critical shortage of skilled service workers. For instance, the healthcare industry is projected to experience a global shortfall of 13 million nurses by 2030 (World Economic Forum).
Local Impact:
In Southeast Asia, the problem is particularly pronounced. Vietnam, for example, showcases alarming statistics:
- Only 26.8% of the labor force is formally trained, with over two-thirds engaged in informal employment often characterized by unstable job security and low wages.
- The region struggles with a labor income share of GDP that falls below both ASEAN and global averages, highlighting the economic disparity faced by workers.
Contributing Factors:
Several systemic issues contribute to the marginalization of service workers in accessing quality training:
- Nature of Work: The mobile and shift-based nature of service jobs offers limited time flexibility, making traditional training methods largely inaccessible.
- Technology Disparity: There is a significant underinvestment in technologies aimed at enhancing the skill sets of deskless workers, who receive only 1% of global tech spending.
- Educational Infrastructure: Vocational training institutions, especially in developing regions, often suffer from outdated curricula, insufficient funding, and a disconnection from the actual needs of the industry. This is compounded by social stigmas attached to vocational education.
Global and Societal Implications:
The training gap has broader societal implications, affecting not only the personal and economic well-being of service workers but also the quality of services crucial for societal functioning. In healthcare, for example, the shortage of trained nurses impacts patient care across global systems, indicating a looming crisis as the population ages.

Our solution is dedicated to supporting individuals like Mrs. Huong, a hardworking nurse in a remote Vietnamese province. With nearly four decades of service in an under-resourced public hospital, Mrs. Huong represents a significant yet often overlooked demographic: service-oriented workers in less economically developed regions, who lack access to quality education and professional development opportunities.
These professionals, numbering over 20 million in Vietnam and over 100 million in Southeast Asia, are typically engaged in essential yet undervalued jobs such as nursing, teaching, cooking, and caregiving. Their roles are crucial, not only impacting their lives but also the well-being of their families and communities. Yet, they remain under-resourced, receiving little recognition and inadequate compensation for their efforts.
Our target population consists of service-driven workers and workers-to-be who are currently underserved in terms of educational resources and career opportunities. These individuals often endure long hours, low pay, and limited career mobility due to the absence of continuing education and professional development. In regions like Southeast Asia, the disparity in access to vocational training further exacerbates their struggles, limiting their ability to advance economically and professionally.
Trainizi addresses these challenges by empowering economic independence and enhancing the quality of life for these workers. Our platform leverages on AI technology to curate and deliver high-quality educational content crafted by local industry experts and renowned international vocational training programs. This content is accessible directly on their mobile devices, facilitated by an AI Teacher designed to guide learning at a personalized pace.
Furthermore, Trainizi connects learning to tangible career advancement by curating related high-paid job opportunities, ensuring the practical applicability of our educational content. This is complemented by an AI Career Coach, which helps users navigate their career paths and apply their new skills effectively in the job market.
By integrating education with career development, Trainizi not only enriches professional knowledge and skills but also creates broader opportunities for economic advancement and personal growth. This comprehensive approach promises a substantial and positive impact on the lives of Mrs. Huong and millions of other service-oriented workers across the region.
Laura Phan, our Founder & CEO, was born and raised in the Mekong Delta, an area synonymous with hardworking yet underserved communities. Her firsthand experiences with these struggles are deeply personal—her mother, a dedicated nurse in a public hospital for nearly 40 years, epitomizes the challenges faced by countless others in similar roles across Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Witnessing her mother's dedication, long hours, and the lack of professional development that stunted her career growth, Laura developed a profound understanding of and empathy for the needs and aspirations of deskless workers.
This intimate knowledge of the community's challenges and needs is not just Laura’s inspiration but also a guiding principle in Trainizi’s approach. It shapes our mission to deliver accessible, high-quality training directly to the mobile devices of those who need it most—workers who are constantly on the move and whose only connection to technology might be a basic mobile phone.
Throughout her career, including her work with international organizations like the World Bank, Lumina Learning and Vietnam government, Laura has specialized in capacity building, developing a deep appreciation for scalable, impactful training programs. Her professional journey has always been about bridging gaps—whether in knowledge, skills, or opportunities. The onset of COVID-19, which halted traditional training methods, catalyzed her to innovate how vocational training could be delivered effectively at scale.
Trainizi was founded on the premise that technology can transcend traditional barriers to education and professional growth. Laura has assembled a co-founding team of experts from diverse fields, including machine learning, big data, business communications, and stakeholder management, whom she has worked closely with on numerous capacity building projects. Each team member brings a unique skill set, but more importantly, they share a common vision and commitment to empowering underserved workers.
Our design and implementation strategies are continually informed by engaging with the very communities we aim to serve. We maintain a continuous feedback loop, gathering insights from local workers to tailor our solutions to their specific needs and conditions. This community-driven approach ensures our initiatives are not only well-received but are also practical and relevant, significantly enhancing the likelihood of meaningful, lasting impact.
- Generate new economic opportunities and buffer against economic shocks for workers, including good job creation, workforce development, and inclusive and attainable asset ownership.
- 4. Quality Education
- 8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
- 10. Reduced Inequalities
- Pilot
We chose the "Pilot" stage because Trainizi has been launched in specific communities, and we are actively refining our business model based on initial feedback and outcomes. Here's what we've achieved and learned so far:
Achievements:
- Client Base and Revenue: As of now, we have secured 9 enterprise clients across Southeast Asia, generating over $83,000 in annual recurring revenue. Through these partnerships, we are currently serving a learner base of over 200,000 deskless workers.
- Media and Awards: Trainizi has been recognized by top national media in South Korea and Vietnam, including features on Naver News and VTV. We also won the #1 Prize at the 2023 ASEAN-South Korea AI Youth Festa, a testament to our innovative approach, awarded at the ASEAN Summit by the governments of South Korea and Indonesia.
- International Recognition and Invitations: We have been invited by the governments of Finland and South Korea to discuss potential collaborations on data-driven educational solutions, and we presented our training methodology for deskless workers at the Edtech Summit Asia 2023 in Bali, Indonesia.
- Investments: Our vision has attracted investment from angel investors who are renowned serial entrepreneurs and investors from South Korea, US, and UK, as well as prestigious institutions namely Techstars and Monk's Hill Ventures. This support underscores our potential to scale and impact the education sector.
Insights and Adjustments:
- Business Model Iteration: Initially, we experimented with a SaaS subscription model offering add-on services to a diverse client base, including SMEs, large enterprises, and educational providers. This approach allowed clients to convert and publish their content. However, feedback indicated a need for higher quality control over the training content.
- Content Strategy Pivot: Based on this feedback, we are shifting from a B2B2C to a B2C2B model, focusing on producing our own high-quality content directly for learners. This strategic pivot is aimed at enhancing the educational impact and ensuring consistency across our offerings.
These initiatives and adjustments not only demonstrate our commitment to improving vocational training for deskless workers but also our ability to rapidly adapt and refine our solution based on real-world experience and feedback.
We are applying to Solve because we recognize the unique alignment between Solve’s capabilities and the needs of Trainizi as we aim to enhance our quality on both content and product and global outreach. Our solution requires multifaceted support to overcome several key barriers:
Education Resources: Identifying and collaborating with international vocational programmes in developed markets like in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia present significant challenges. Solve’s extensive network of global partners and its reputation can provide us with crucial market insights and introductions to industry leaders. This support is essential for us to tailor and effectively position our solution to bridge the knowledge from the Global North to the workers in the Global South.
Government Collaboration: Our goal to collaborate with governments to enhance job opportunities for deskless workers requires navigating complex regulatory environments and building trust with public institutions. We believe Solve’s experience in fostering public-private partnerships and its ability to facilitate engagements with government stakeholders will be invaluable in these efforts.
Sustainable Financing: As an organization committed to long-term impact over short-term gains, we seek to explore and secure alternative financing sources. Solve’s expertise and resources in identifying and applying for non-traditional funding can help us build a robust, sustainable financing strategy. This is crucial for us to maintain our mission-driven focus while scaling our impact.
Media and Visibility: Increased visibility is critical to our growth and ability to attract the right partnerships and resources. Solve’s media exposure can amplify our message, attract more attention to the plight of deskless workers, and showcase our innovative solutions to a global audience.
By joining the Solve community, we anticipate not only overcoming these barriers but also leveraging the collaborative opportunities it offers to refine and enhance our solutions further. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to create systemic change for millions of underserved workers globally, making Solve an ideal platform for us to accelerate our impact.
