Adoption of Catfish Farming in the Lowlands of Muleba District

The selected areas have people who live under extreme poverty. They simply deal with subsistence crop cultivation which in tern have made them suffer for a long time malnutrition hence kids growth dormance.

The povert level of this areas is also associated with poor housing facilities, unemployment and poor local infrastructure.The

The solution involves construction of ponds using simple materials found in the area. 

The traditional ponds for keeping catfish are to be constructed using clay soil and stones without using much of industrial materials.

The water to ponds are to be directed from available minor rivers which flow in permanent way.

The water too, are to be harvested from runoffs during the rains which are raining frequently.

The catfish are more resistant and need minimum investing costs.

Since the selected area have a number of people, at the beginning the solution is to serve 5 villages and the rest will adopt from the pilot area.

For the first year (2024) the project will start in Bubuya homelet with 62 households and 400 number of people from which a group of 10 household need to have a pond.

The solution at the end will reduce poverty completely through, employment, food supply, income, housing as well as infrastructures.

The fund for investment intend to be rotational so as to reach more villages since all of them share the same poverty characteristics.

We have a team from our organization that involve all Tanzanians. In our organization we have people with different qualifications from which the team is selected. 

Since PANADET connects individuals entire the country, we select people from Muleba in Kagera region who are very closer to the community we are serving. 

I, team leader,  I have master of business administration (MBA). The organization contains PhDs, degrees, dimplomas, certificates, other low level and uneducated. 

The research study done on the area involved the community as well as the solution team.

We have made pond with 500 catfish and we are using it as a practical class for educating the people.

We are applying to solve for donations in terms of technical support so as to have more education and further to get financial support on education so as we can reach man large community.

We are looking for projects support on catfish fingerlings production of high quality to have enough of them for the ponds for many villagers.

This solution is innovative as it uses the available simple materials and resources to make a great impact to a large community of Kagera region

Materials and resources include water availability through rivers, springs and runoffs made by frequency rains in near Equator region.

The people of this region, are suffering from poverty and malnutrition and kids growth dormance.

The solution uses short time to bring out the positive outcomes. African Catfish in this area need just 4 to 6 months to grow and be harvested.

There is already market not only in the area but alover the country especially the big city of Dar es Salaam and other minor town.

To eradicate poverty is the general goal which base on the following:

Increase income among the community households. This is measured by checking the groups income statement which need to be organized by team.

Provision of employment opportunities. Most of the people are to be involved in the activities hence employed.

The infrastructures are to be deloped. The selling of fish, need transportation system which are reliable. This can be seen across the area with ponds.

Inorder to reach many people, the solution need a simple technologies including the following:

A pond drilling trector. Currently traditional tools are being used and the pond contraction is taking longer.

Some areas need nylon sheets where the soils are more porous to prevent water loss

Stones are available in the area including other materials they need to carries to pond area if needed.

Catfish fingerlings product technologies is very important instead of all time buying from already available producers who sell one at 300/ tanzanian shillings equivalent to 0.12$.
