The specific problem BlueCoast is addressing is the degradation of coastal ecosystems and the vulnerability of coastal communities in Tanzania and Sub-Saharan Africa to climate change, urbanization, and unsustainable practices.
In Tanzania, the coastal zone is home to approximately 30% of the country's population, with over 10 million people relying on these ecosystems for their livelihoods. However, these ecosystems are facing unprecedented threats, including:
- Coastal erosion: Tanzania's coastline is experiencing an average erosion rate of 1-2 meters per year, resulting in the loss of habitats, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
- Habitat destruction: Up to 70% of Tanzania's mangrove forests have been destroyed or degraded, leading to the loss of critical breeding grounds for fish and other marine species.
- Pollution: The Indian Ocean coastline in Tanzania is plagued by plastic pollution, with an estimated 12,000 tons of plastic waste entering the ocean every year.
- Climate change: Rising sea levels and increased storm frequency are exacerbating the impacts of coastal erosion, flooding, and saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources.
Globally, the problem is equally pressing, with:
- 40% of the world's population living in coastal areas, with many more relying on these ecosystems for food, livelihoods, and recreation.
- 30% of the world's coastal ecosystems being degraded or destroyed, resulting in the loss of critical ecosystem services and biodiversity.
- 100 million people being displaced or affected by coastal erosion and flooding annually, with economic losses estimated at over $1 trillion.
The factors contributing to this problem that relate to BlueCoast's solution include:
- Lack of effective conservation and management of coastal ecosystems
- Inadequate infrastructure and planning to address climate change and urbanization
- Limited community engagement and empowerment in decision-making processes
- Unsustainable practices, such as overfishing and pollution, that degrade coastal ecosystems
By addressing these factors, BlueCoast aims to protect Tanzania's coastal ecosystems and communities, while also contributing to global efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable development.
BlueCoast is an integrated approach to protect Tanzania's coastal ecosystems and communities through conservation, equity, and sustainable infrastructure. Our solution consists of five interconnected components:
- Ecosystem Restoration: We implement habitat conservation and restoration projects to preserve critical coastal habitats, such as mangrove forests and coral reefs.
- Community Empowerment: We engage local communities in decision-making processes, empowering them to manage and steward their natural resources.
- Sustainable Infrastructure: We promote the adoption of nature-based solutions and develop sustainable, climate-ready blue infrastructure, such as seawalls and jetties, that harmonize with the surrounding environment.
- Women's Community Group: We support a women's community group dedicated to litter-picking and beach-cleaning activities, promoting community engagement and empowerment.
- Innovative Science and Research: We leverage cutting-edge research and collaboration among stakeholders to develop holistic solutions that address the multifaceted challenges faced by coastal ecosystems and communities.
Our solution uses a range of technologies, including:

- Mobile applications: To engage local communities and facilitate data collection and monitoring.
- Sustainable engineering: To design and implement climate-ready infrastructure that minimizes environmental impacts.
- Data analytics: To analyze ecosystem health, climate trends, and community engagement, informing data-driven decision-making.
By integrating these components, BlueCoast provides a comprehensive approach to protecting Tanzania's coastal ecosystems and communities, while promoting sustainable development and community empowerment.
BlueCoast serves the coastal communities of Tanzania, with a focus on the most vulnerable and underserved populations, including:
- Local fishermen and women: Approximately 120,000 people who rely on the ocean for their livelihoods, but face declining fish stocks, habitat destruction, and increased competition from industrial fishing.
- Coastal residents: Around 500,000 people who are displaced or affected by coastal erosion, flooding, and saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources, threatening their homes, livelihoods, and health.
- Women and girls: Approximately 200,000 women and girls who are disproportionately affected by the lack of access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, and are often marginalized in decision-making processes.
These communities are currently underserved due to:
- Limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities
- Inadequate infrastructure and planning to address climate change and urbanization
- Lack of effective conservation and management of coastal ecosystems
- Limited community engagement and empowerment in decision-making processes
BlueCoast's solution will directly and meaningfully improve the lives of these communities by:
- Providing sustainable livelihoods and economic opportunities through ecosystem restoration and sustainable infrastructure development, benefiting at least 30,000 people
- Enhancing community resilience and adaptive capacity to climate change and natural disasters, protecting the lives and livelihoods of over 100,000 people
- Empowering women and girls through education, training, and community engagement, reaching at least 10,000 women and girls
- Improving access to healthcare, education, and social services for over 50,000 people
- Promoting community-led conservation and management of coastal ecosystems, engaging at least 5,000 community members
By addressing the needs of these underserved communities, BlueCoast aims to improve their overall well-being, increase their resilience to climate change, and promote sustainable development in Tanzania's coastal regions.

- Pilot
I selected the Pilot stage because BlueCoast has launched its solution in at least one community in Tanzania and is still iterating on its design and business model.
So far, we have:
- Conducted a successful pilot project in the coastal town of Pangani, Tanzania, where we worked with local communities to restore 10 hectares of mangrove forests and established a community-led conservation initiative.
- Engaged with over 500 community members, including fishermen, women, and youth, through participatory workshops and training sessions to raise awareness about the importance of coastal ecosystem conservation and climate resilience.
- Developed and tested a mobile application that enables community members to report on coastal erosion, flooding, and other environmental issues, which has been used by over 100 community members.
- Established partnerships with local government agencies, NGOs, and private sector organizations to support the scaling up of our solution.
While we have made significant progress, we are still refining our business model and iterating on our design to ensure that it is scalable, sustainable, and effective in addressing the needs of coastal communities in Tanzania.
We are applying to Solve because we believe that the program can provide us with the necessary support to overcome the specific barriers we face in scaling our solution. As a social enterprise working in a developing country, we encounter several challenges that hinder our growth and impact.
One of the main barriers we face is accessing funding to support our operations and expansion plans. We hope that Solve can connect us with potential funders and investors who can provide us with the necessary financial resources to scale our solution.
Another challenge we face is accessing technical expertise and resources to improve our solution. We believe that Solve's network of experts and partners can provide us with the technical support we need to refine our mobile application and data analytics platform.
We face cultural and market barriers in terms of raising awareness about the importance of coastal ecosystem conservation and climate resilience among local communities and stakeholders. We hope that Solve can help us connect with organizations and individuals who can provide us with cultural and market insights to better tailor our solution to the needs of our target audience.
We are particularly interested in Solve's ability to connect us with partners who can provide non-monetary support, such as mentorship, networking opportunities, and access to expertise. We believe that these forms of support can be just as valuable as funding in helping us overcome the barriers we face.
We believe that Solve can provide us with the necessary support to overcome the barriers we face and achieve our mission of protecting Tanzania's coastal ecosystems and communities.

The core technology powering BlueCoast's solution is a mobile-based platform that leverages geospatial mapping, data analytics, and community engagement to promote sustainable coastal ecosystem management. Our platform, called "CoastalGuard," is designed to support the conservation and restoration of mangrove forests and coral reefs, while also enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities.
CoastalGuard uses a combination of satellite imagery, drone technology, and community-led monitoring to track changes in coastal ecosystems and identify areas of high conservation value. The platform's data analytics capabilities enable us to analyze this data and provide insights on ecosystem health, biodiversity, and the impacts of climate change and human activities.
The platform also includes a mobile application that enables community members to report on coastal erosion, flooding, and other environmental issues, as well as to access information on sustainable livelihoods and ecosystem conservation. The app uses gamification and incentives to encourage community members to participate in conservation efforts and adopt sustainable practices.
CoastalGuard incorporates traditional knowledge systems and technologies, such as indigenous mapping and community-based conservation approaches, to ensure that our solution is culturally sensitive and effective. By combining modern and ancestral technologies, we are able to develop a solution that is tailored to the specific needs and context of coastal communities in Tanzania.
