- Hybrid of for-profit and nonprofit
The specific problem Coastify addresses is the unsustainable exploitation of coastal resources in Tanzania and Sub-Saharan Africa, exacerbating poverty, environmental degradation, and climate vulnerability. In Tanzania, the coastal zone is home to approximately 30% of the population, with over 3 million people directly dependent on coastal resources for their livelihoods. However, the coastal ecosystem is under immense pressure, with an estimated 30% of Tanzania's mangrove forests lost between 1990 and 2015, and 70% of its coral reefs degraded or destroyed.
The scale of the problem is significant, with an estimated 39 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa living in coastal areas, and 70% of the region's coastline experiencing erosion or degradation. The economic impact is substantial, with the loss of coastal ecosystem services estimated to cost Tanzania around 2.5% of its GDP annually. Furthermore, climate change is projected to displace up to 1.4 million people in Tanzania's coastal regions by 2050, exacerbating poverty, food insecurity, and social unrest.
Key factors contributing to this problem include inadequate policy frameworks, lack of community engagement, and limited access to alternative livelihoods. In Tanzania, for example, only 10% of coastal communities have been involved in coastal management decision-making processes, and 70% of coastal fisheries are overfished or depleted. By addressing these underlying factors, Coastify aims to promote sustainable coastal development and improve the livelihoods of coastal communities in Tanzania and beyond.
Coastify is an integrated coastal development initiative that promotes sustainable livelihoods and environmental conservation in Tanzania's coastal regions. Our solution is a holistic approach that combines community engagement, capacity building, and technology-driven interventions to support coastal communities in adopting sustainable practices.
At the heart of Coastify is a participatory planning process that brings together local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to develop and implement integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) plans. These plans are tailored to the specific needs and contexts of each coastal region, ensuring that they are effective and sustainable.
To support the implementation of ICZM plans, Coastify provides training and capacity-building programs for coastal communities, focusing on alternative income generation activities, sustainable fishing practices, and eco-tourism development. We also establish market linkages and access to finance for coastal producers, enabling them to benefit from sustainable economic opportunities.
Coastify leverages technology to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of our interventions. We use geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing to monitor coastal ecosystem health, track changes in land use, and identify areas of high conservation value. Our mobile-based data collection platform enables real-time monitoring and evaluation of project activities, allowing for adaptive management and continuous improvement.
By combining community engagement, capacity building, and technology-driven interventions, Coastify provides a comprehensive solution that addresses the complex challenges facing Tanzania's coastal communities, promoting sustainable livelihoods, environmental conservation, and climate resilience.
Coastify serves coastal communities in Tanzania, with a focus on approximately 300,000 small-scale fishers, 200,000 farmers, and 50,000 entrepreneurs who are directly dependent on coastal resources for their livelihoods. These communities are currently underserved, facing significant challenges in accessing basic services, markets, and economic opportunities. They are also disproportionately affected by climate change, coastal erosion, and environmental degradation, which exacerbate poverty, food insecurity, and social vulnerability.
Our solution directly impacts the lives of coastal communities by providing them with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to adopt sustainable livelihoods and improve their economic well-being. Through Coastify, coastal communities will have access to:
1. Alternative income generation activities, such as eco-tourism and sustainable fishing practices, which will increase their income and reduce their dependence on depleting coastal resources. This will benefit at least 10,000 households, improving their annual income by up to 30%.
2. Capacity-building programs, which will enhance their skills and knowledge in sustainable coastal management, entrepreneurship, and business development. We aim to train at least 5,000 community members, with a focus on women and youth.
3. Market linkages and access to finance, which will enable them to access new markets, improve their productivity, and increase their profitability. This will benefit at least 2,000 small-scale enterprises, increasing their annual revenue by up to 25%.
4. Improved coastal ecosystem health, which will enhance their food security, reduce their vulnerability to climate change, and protect their natural assets. Our solution will help conserve at least 10,000 hectares of coastal ecosystems, protecting biodiversity and promoting ecosystem services that benefit both local communities and the global environment.
By addressing the needs of coastal communities, Coastify will improve their overall well-being, increase their resilience to climate change, and promote sustainable development in Tanzania's coastal regions.

- Pilot
We have selected the Pilot stage because we have launched Coastify in at least one community in Tanzania and are still iterating on our design and business model. So far, we have:
- Conducted a successful pilot project in the coastal town of Pangani, where we worked with 50 small-scale fishers and 20 entrepreneurs to develop and test our integrated coastal development approach.
- Established a community-led coastal management committee, which has taken ownership of the project and is working to scale up our interventions to other coastal communities.
- Developed and tested our mobile-based data collection platform, which has been used to collect data on coastal ecosystem health, fisheries management, and community livelihoods.
- Provided training and capacity-building programs to over 100 community members, focusing on sustainable fishing practices, entrepreneurship, and business development.
Established partnerships with local government agencies, NGOs, and private sector organizations to support the scaling up of our solution.
While we have made significant progress, we are still iterating on our design and business model to ensure that it is scalable, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of coastal communities in Tanzania.
We are applying to Solve because we believe that the program can provide us with the necessary support to overcome the specific barriers we face in scaling up our solution, Coastify. Additionally, our pilot project in Pangani, Tanzania, has demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach in improving coastal ecosystem health and livelihoods for community members.
Our impact goals for Coastify are to:
- Improve the livelihoods of 10,000 coastal community members in Tanzania by 2025, with a focus on increasing their income and access to sustainable economic opportunities.
- Enhance the conservation and management of 5,000 hectares of coastal ecosystems in Tanzania by 2025, with a focus on protecting biodiversity and ecosystem services.
To measure our progress towards these goals, we are tracking the following indicators:
- Number of community members trained and capacitated in sustainable coastal management and entrepreneurship
- Increase in average income of coastal community members
- Number of coastal entrepreneurs linked to markets and finance
- Area of coastal ecosystems under sustainable management and conservation
- Biodiversity and ecosystem service indicators, such as species abundance and water quality
We are also conducting regular surveys and assessments to measure the impact of our solution on the well-being and livelihoods of coastal community members. Our indicators are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are informed by international best practices in coastal management and conservation.
By achieving our impact goals, we aim to contribute to a transformational impact on the lives of coastal community members in Tanzania, improving their economic well-being, health, and resilience to climate change and natural disasters.
The core technology powering Coastify is a mobile-based data collection and GIS mapping system. This system enables community members to collect and report data on coastal ecosystem health, fisheries management, and livelihoods using mobile devices. The data is then uploaded to a cloud-based platform, where it is analyzed and visualized using GIS mapping technology.
This technology allows us to:
- Collect and analyze large amounts of data on coastal ecosystems and livelihoods
- Identify areas of high conservation value and prioritize interventions
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of our interventions on coastal ecosystems and livelihoods
- Provide data-driven insights to inform decision-making and policy development
- Engage and empower community members in the management and conservation of coastal resources
Our technology is designed to be user-friendly, accessible, and adaptable to the needs of coastal communities. We have developed a simple and intuitive mobile app that can be used by community members with limited technical expertise. The app is available in local languages and is designed to work offline, making it accessible in areas with limited internet connectivity.
By leveraging mobile and GIS technology, we are able to collect and analyze data more efficiently and effectively, and provide insights that can inform decision-making and policy development. Our technology is designed to support the empowerment of coastal communities and promote sustainable coastal development and conservation.
