The specific problem BAOFA aim to address is the escalating impact of climate change on communities, particularly in relation to the degradation of ecosystems and agricultural practices. Climate change poses significant challenges such as changing weather patterns, starvation, poverty, persisting droughts and flooding, soil erosion, depletion of forests, rising temperatures, land degradation, and drying water catchment areas. This pave the way for frequent outbreaks of enteric diseases like cholera, dysentery, diseases such as malaria, extreme heat illnesses, water and air-born diseases.
At the local level, communities are experiencing tangible effects such as reduced crop yields, loss of biodiversity, and heightened vulnerability to natural disaster. Globally, the problem is even more pronounced, with millions of people facing food insecurity, displacement, and economic instability due to climate-related events. As highlighted by the Human Development Report, that true human development is hindered when individuals are shackled by poverty, hunger, ill-health, and lack of education.
Key factors contributing to this problem include deforestation, unsustainable land use practices and inadequate adaptation strategies. By promoting the cultivation of climate-resilient trees and fruit trees, BAOFA aim to address these factors directly. Climate-resilient trees can help mitigate the effects of climate change by stabilizing soils, conserving water catchment areas, and providing habitat for biodiversity. Additionally, fruit trees offer multiple benefits such as nutritious food sources, income generation opportunities, and ecosystems restoration.
Community education is also a crucial component of BAOFA solution. By raising awareness about the importance of climate resilience and providing training on sustainable agricultural practices, BAOFA empower communities to adapt to changing environmental conditions and build resilience for the future.
Butaleja has a population over 450,000 people of which 98% depend on agriculture. Climatic variations exert profound leverage on the health of our
communities. The burgeoning population and development pressures,
exacerbate the exploitation of Uganda's land-cover. Therefore, the projected impact of climate change on human health are dire. As a country we are grappling with a problem of STUNTING among children (0-5 years by 22.8%), WASTING among children (0-5 years by 2.8%), ANEMIA among children (0-5 years by 48%in the region), ANEMIA among women of reproductive age is by 17.7%. (Uganda Nutrition Action Plan (UNAP) II 2020-2024/25). These epidemics not only result in the loss o human lives but also decrease productivity, adding an additional burden to our already strained healthcare system.
Agricultural as our cornerstone, is grappling with the palpable impacts of climate change, evidenced by rising temperatures, droughts and flooding, prolonged dry spells, and the onslaught of pests and diseases affecting both livestock and crops. This climatic assault disrupts the value chains of crops, livestock, and fisheries, leading to severe consequences such as food insecurity, malnutrition, increased poverty.
Therefore, there is an urgent need to address these conditions. By intertwining the growth of climate resilient trees and fruit trees and nutrition education, BAOFA provides a practical solution to improve the dietary intake among other.
By integrating egroecological principles, climate-smart
technologies, and inclusive policies, BAOFA will enhance agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability, and socioeconomic resilience.
