Current levels of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere are elevated beyond the favorable amount for the biosphere. This elevation is causing destruction such as climate change, air pollution, and ocean acidifications etc. which are contributing to the overall death of organisms leading to loss in biodiversity.
We have identified a major factor for this increase in greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere as the car-centric society today. Employed workers in the urban areas and the suburbs not only encounter extreme traffic congestion, they also usually take expensive cabs individually causing a heightened amount of carbon dioxide emission due to higher number of vehicles. Traffic congestion is a fairly prevalent problem in India and many other places in the world and this is also the problem that leads to greenhouse gas production. The contribution of traffic congestion to air pollution ranges from 25% to 50% and can vary based on different circumstances of different areas. In the combustion chambers of cars fuel is combusted to form carbon molecules such as carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that is a major contributor to greenhouse effect.
The extent of harm was studied by the World Health Organization (WHO), which concluded that air pollution caused by vehicle emissions contributed to millions of premature deaths annually by causing respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases and neurological problems.
Factors contributing to the problem include inadequate public transportation infrastructure, lack of alternative mobility options, and societal preferences for individual car ownership. Additionally, affordability and accessibility play a significant role, with cheaper alternatives such as private cars and cabs being favored over public transport due to perceived convenience and comfort.
The solution is a transportation company that offers people a bus service with modern amenities, safety features, and particularly efficient scheduling to minimize the commuting time. While this not only improves the quality of their daily commute, it also decreases their carbon footprint because the vehicles are powered by electricity and renewable sources of energy. Another reason is that the solution also promotes shared transportation, which reduces individual commuting costs but also contributes to a reduction in traffic congestion, energy consumption and air pollution.
We plan to leverage advanced scheduling algorithms and real-time tracking systems to optimize route planning and minimize wait times for passengers. While these programs have not yet been implemented, we recognize their importance in ensuring the efficiency, reliability, and convenience of our service. Stability and reliability in scheduling are paramount for commuters who rely on our transportation service to commute between their homes and workplaces at regular times. Our intention to implement advanced scheduling algorithms aims precisely at addressing this need. By creating stable schedules that align with the typical commuting patterns of our target audience, we ensure that commuters can depend on our service to be available when they need it most. Our scheduling algorithms will analyze historical data and passenger demand to establish consistent routes and departure times.
Additionally, we plan to implement real-time tracking systems on each bus in our fleet. This technology will enable us to monitor the location and movement of buses in real-time, transmitting this information to a centralized control center. While these systems have yet to be deployed, our operations team will be able to use the data to dynamically adjust routes and respond to changing conditions, ultimately providing a more responsive and efficient service to passengers.
We are planning to develop a mobile app for ticket booking and trip planning to facilitate a seamless user experience for commuters. The mobile app will serve as a one-stop platform for commuters to book tickets, plan their trips, and access real-time information about our transportation service.
GreenCommute buses rely on electricity as their power source, which can be generated from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, or geothermal energy. When renewable sources are used, the overall carbon footprint of electric buses can be significantly reduced compared to traditional fossil fuel-powered buses.
Unlike diesel or gasoline-powered buses, electric buses produce zero tailpipe emissions, meaning they don't emit pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), or carbon dioxide (CO2) during operation. This helps to improve air quality.
These buses are generally more energy-efficient than their internal combustion engine counterparts. Electric motors have higher efficiency rates compared to combustion engines, which means a greater percentage of the energy stored in the battery is converted into usable power to propel the bus. Furthermore, many electric buses utilize regenerative braking technology. When the bus brakes, kinetic energy is converted back into electrical energy and stored in the battery. This helps to extend the range of the bus and improves overall energy efficiency.
The solution serves commuters in urban and suburban areas of India, focusing on individuals who currently face challenges with their transportation options. This target population mainly includes working professionals who are inconvenienced with their current way of commuting. These commuters are underserved by existing transportation infrastructure in several ways.
1. There are limited options. Many commuters rely on private cars or cabs due to inadequate public transportation while others use public transportation and sacrifice the quality for the price. Through surveys, we have found out the top problems they face are unreliable service, limited coverage and overcrowding. Working professionals rely on punctual transportation for their daily commutes, making this a huge problem.
2. Private car ownership and cab services are expensive, particularly for middle-class individuals and families, straining household budgets. Expenses such as fuel, maintenance, parking fees and fares add onto the cost. As a result, a substantial portion of the household budget is allocated towards transportation costs, leaving fewer funds available for other necessities. This may force households to make trade-offs in their spending and limit mobility which would restrict employment opportunities, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and recreational activities, further reducing overall quality of life. Moreover, socio-economic disparity between higher-income and lower-income individuals is perpetuated by this as the higher income individuals are able to absorb the transportation costs without significant impact on their budget.
3. Reliance on cars and other private vehicles exacerbates air pollution and environmental degradation, impacting the health of the consumer and everyone else in the community. Respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases are just some problems that may contribute to the deteriorating health of all individuals.
4. Many college students that go to school in the outskirts within Jaipur have to book expensive cabs daily or use purely profit-based bus services provided by the university to transport to school and come home. The cab services like uber are overly expensive and contribute to heightened traffic congestion. College buses usually charge more than the required amount for transportation.
Our solution addresses these challenges by offering a private bus service that caters to the needs of the target population:
1. Our service provides a more affordable transportation option compared to private cars and cabs. By offering competitive fares and convenient payment methods, we aim to make sustainable transportation accessible to a wider audience.
2. The private bus service operates on scheduled routes, providing commuters with reliable and predictable transportation options. Passengers can enjoy comfortable and stress-free travel experiences without the hassle of navigating traffic or finding parking spaces.
3. Our buses are designed for energy efficiency and equipped with modern amenities to ensure a comfortable ride for passengers. By promoting shared transportation, we reduce the overall number of vehicles on the road, leading to decreased traffic congestion and improved air quality in urban and suburban areas.
4. A cheaper alternative to college students will allow them to save more money for college resources and compensate for the amount that’s going into college tuition fees.
The GreenLane Team is based from India, and we are all passionate about the deteriorating air quality that India has seen over the years. Commuting here has never been more inefficient due to the increasing amount of traffic seeped into the daily routine of Indians. I, Anushka Pal, have stayed in Taiwan, and multiple parts of India. This diversity and variability of experiences gives me a global perspective that help me judge the limitations of the current transportation environment of India. I am representative of the community in India because I live and breathe the air that I want to bring a change to. Since I am able to compare and contrast the level of work required in different places like West Bengal or Rajasthan, I am more so suited to tackle this.
