G-remote: Climate Energy Vulnerability Mapping
- Benin
- For-profit, including B-Corp or similar models
Benin, a West African country with low income, has 75% of its 13.35 million population living on less than $2 a day (World Bank, 2006). According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), only 41% of Benin’s population currently has access to electricity, with a mere 3.1% coming from renewable sources. The use of renewable energy, which heavily relies on lithium batteries for storage, poses several challenges. These batteries have a short lifespan and can be hazardous, especially in hot climates. Additionally, they require high initial costs, technical expertise, and installation time. Consequently, this energy deficit contributes to the lack of access to electricity, internet, clean water, and online education opportunities for 60% of the 2 million students residing in rural areas. This situation is not unique to Benin but is prevalent across West African countries and the continent as a whole.
Our innovative Smart Solar Generator solution tackles electricity accessibility
challenges in rural West African areas such as Benin. By harnessing solar energy
and cutting-edge battery technology, it delivers dependable and cost-effective
electricity to rural schools, conquering obstacles related to grid integration. With
exclusive technology ensuring effective and dependable systems, we gain a
competitive advantage. This solution alleviates challenges by providing electricity,
internet access, and clean water, enriching educational prospects and community
progress. The advantages include enhanced education, socioeconomic
empowerment, environmental responsibility, and enduring collaborations with local
communities, governmental bodies, and non-governmental organizations.
We use GIS data system to improuve our generator efficience and effectiviness.
Our main target audience is schools in rural areas, specifically focusing on addressing the critical need for electricity access in these educational institutions. These schools are often underserved and face significant challenges in providing quality education due to the lack of reliable electricity.
Without electricity, rural schools struggle to power essential facilities such as classrooms, computer labs, and administrative offices. This limits their ability to offer modern educational resources and technologies, hindering the academic growth and development of students.
Our solution, the Smart Solar Generator, aims to directly impact the lives of students, teachers, and staff in these rural schools by providing a reliable and sustainable source of electricity. With access to electricity, these schools can enhance their educational offerings by powering computers, internet connectivity, lighting, and other essential equipment.
By ensuring consistent access to electricity, our solution empowers rural schools to provide a conducive learning environment that fosters academic achievement, innovation, and digital literacy among students. Additionally, it enables teachers to access online educational resources, collaborate with colleagues, and implement innovative teaching methods.
Furthermore, our solution extends beyond the classroom to benefit entire communities by providing access to clean water purification systems, internet connectivity for communication and information access, and opportunities for economic development through electrification.
In summary, our primary focus on schools in rural areas aims to directly address the urgent need for electricity access in education, thereby enhancing educational outcomes, empowering communities, and fostering socio-economic development in underserved regions.

- Prototype
We selected the prototype phase because we have progressed beyond conceptualization and have started building and testing our solution. Specifically, we have developed three smart generators, which represent tangible progress towards our goal of providing reliable electricity to rural communities.
In the testing phase, we are currently conducting trials of these smart generators at the University of Abomey-Calavi. This testing phase allows us to assess the performance, reliability, and effectiveness of our solution in a controlled environment before deploying it to real-world settings. By testing our smart generators in a university setting, we can gather valuable feedback from students, faculty, and staff, which will inform further refinements and improvements.
While we are still in the testing phase, we have not yet served any customers or beneficiaries outside of the university. However, our focus at this stage is on ensuring that our solution meets the needs and expectations of end-users, and we are actively working towards deploying our smart generators to rural communities in the near future.
In summary, our progress in building three smart generators and conducting testing at the University of Abomey-Calavi represents a significant milestone in our journey towards providing reliable electricity to rural communities. While we have not yet served customers or beneficiaries, our focus on rigorous testing and refinement ensures that our solution will be effective and impactful when deployed in real-world settings.
We are applying to Solve because we believe in the power of collaboration and partnership to drive meaningful change. While we recognize that financial support is important, our primary goal in applying to Solve is to access a network of partners who can provide both monetary and non-monetary support to advance our solution.
Specifically, we face financial, legal, and market barriers that we hope Solve can help us overcome. These barriers include limited access to funding for research and development, regulatory challenges related to energy infrastructure deployment, and market barriers such as competition from traditional energy providers.
By becoming a Solve Solver, we aim to leverage Solve's extensive network of partners to access funding opportunities, navigate regulatory complexities, and forge strategic partnerships with organizations that share our vision and values. Additionally, we see Solve as an opportunity to showcase our solution to potential investors, customers, and collaborators, thereby expanding our reach and impact.
