The specific problem within the Carbon Solutions Challenge that our solution addresses is the inadequate supply of affordable housing in Kenya, exacerbated by the country's rapidly growing population. With an annual housing demand of 250,000 units and only 50,000 units supplied, millions of Kenyans struggle to access decent and affordable housing. This challenge is particularly acute in urban areas, where approximately 6.4 million people live in informal settlements, and 60% of Nairobi's residents reside in slums.
The scale of the problem is significant, affecting millions of people across Kenya and contributing to issues such as poverty, lack of access to basic services, and insecure land tenure. Furthermore, the rising costs of rent and property pricing are exacerbating the housing affordability crisis, forcing many Kenyans to reside in substandard living conditions.
Our solution directly addresses this problem by introducing earth-based construction techniques to provide sustainable, affordable housing solutions. By utilizing locally sourced materials such as stone and mud, we aim to reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional construction methods while simultaneously creating durable and cost-effective housing options. Through our approach, we seek to empower communities with the ability to build modern, resilient homes that are accessible to all income levels, thereby contributing to the alleviation of the housing deficit in Kenya and beyond.
Our solution, not only introduces innovative earth-based construction techniques but also creates a platform where communities learn and teach each other. We aim to revolutionize the construction industry by providing sustainable and affordable housing solutions while fostering knowledge exchange and capacity building among local communities.
The process begins with careful site selection and preparation, ensuring that the chosen location is suitable for earth-based construction. Next, our team of trained professionals utilizes a combination of traditional and modern construction methods to build the structure. This includes techniques such as rammed earth, adobe, and stabilized mud, which have been used for centuries and are renowned for their durability and thermal performance.
One of the key technologies employed by us is advanced soil stabilization techniques, which enhance the strength and durability of the construction materials. This involves mixing locally sourced soil with stabilizers such as lime or cement to improve its load-bearing capacity and resistance to weathering. Additionally, we incorporate innovative building design and project management software to optimize efficiency and ensure high-quality construction outcomes.
The result is a modern, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective housing solution that addresses the pressing challenges of housing affordability and sustainability. Core solutions homes are not only resilient to environmental factors such as extreme weather conditions but also provide excellent thermal performance, keeping occupants comfortable year-round.
Furthermore, we prioritizes community engagement and capacity building throughout the construction process. Through a platform where communities access resources, share knowledge, and learn from each other's experiences. This platform serves as a hub for training, workshops, and collaborative projects, empowering communities to take ownership of their housing solutions and contribute to long-term sustainability.
Core solutions offers a comprehensive approach to sustainable housing construction, combining innovative earth-based techniques with advanced technology and community engagement. Through our solution and platform, we empower communities to build a better future while preserving the planet for generations to come.
Core solutions primarily serves communities facing housing challenges, particularly those in low-income urban and rural areas of Kenya. These communities often lack access to affordable and durable housing solutions, forcing them to live in informal settlements or substandard housing conditions. The target population includes families, individuals, and marginalized groups who are disproportionately affected by inadequate housing.
In urban areas, such as Nairobi, where slums and informal settlements are prevalent, millions of residents endure overcrowded and unsanitary living conditions. Many households live in makeshift shelters constructed from corrugated iron sheets, mud, or other low-quality materials, which offer little protection from the elements and pose health and safety risks. Additionally, residents of informal settlements often lack access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, and electricity.
In rural areas, the housing problem is characterized by poor-quality dwellings and a lack of infrastructure. Many families live in traditional mud houses or rudimentary structures that are susceptible to weather damage and offer inadequate living conditions. Moreover, rural communities often face challenges related to land tenure security and limited access to resources and services.
Core solutions directly addresses the needs of these underserved populations by providing sustainable and affordable housing solutions tailored to their specific circumstances. Our innovative earth-based construction techniques offer a cost-effective alternative to conventional building materials, making homeownership more accessible to low-income families. By utilizing locally available resources and incorporating advanced soil stabilization techniques, we can significantly reduce construction costs while improving the durability and longevity of housing structures.
Our focus on community engagement and capacity building empowers residents to actively participate in the construction process and take ownership of their housing solutions. Through training, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives, we aim to equip communities with the skills and resources needed to build and maintain their homes sustainably. By fostering a sense of pride and self-reliance, our solution not only improves living conditions but also strengthens community resilience and social cohesion.
Overall, Core solutions impact extends beyond providing shelter; it seeks to transform lives by offering a pathway to dignified housing, economic opportunity, and environmental sustainability. Through our holistic approach, we aim to create positive and lasting change in the lives of those most in need, paving the way for a brighter future for generations to come.
Our team is deeply connected to the communities we serve, and our approach to solution design and implementation is guided by firsthand experiences and insights gained from living and working within these communities.
As the Team Lead, I have roots in the very communities we seek to support. Having grown up in a low-income neighborhood in Nairobi, I intimately understand the challenges and aspirations of families living in informal settlements. I've witnessed firsthand the struggles of inadequate housing, the resilience of community members, and the urgent need for sustainable solutions. This personal connection fuels my passion and commitment to driving positive change in these communities. I also have some technical skills as an engineering student.
From day one, we've teamed up with the very individuals we aim to serve. Picture us sitting down with community members, chatting over cups of tea, and exchanging stories about life in their neighborhoods. We don't just listen; we actively engage in discussions, soaking up insights, hopes, and dreams shared by the people themselves. It's a collaborative journey where every voice matters. We also roll up our sleeves and join hands with local leaders, community groups, and grassroots organizations.
In essence, our approach is all about people – their experiences, their needs, and their aspirations. By walking hand in hand with the community, we're not just designing a solution; we're co-creating a pathway to sustainable change, one conversation at a time.

With the support of our local Rotaract club, we have embarked on a mission to build a classroom and a kitchen for a school in Nairobi county. So far have been testing different mixtures to create the strongest bricks, ensuring durability and resilience. We have tested out the soil in the school area and determine the kind of materials we will use for the mud bricks. We have also put together a team to build the classroom and kitchen in August. We have also set aside stones from the river that will be used in the process and tested their water absorption capacity.
We are also in the process of developing a platform to share our knowledge and experiences, inviting like-minded individuals to join us on this incredible journey of building sustainable communities from the ground up.
We're drawn to Solve because it embodies the spirit of collective action and innovation that's at the heart of our mission. Beyond just seeking funds, we're eager to forge deep partnerships that amplify our impact and help us surmount the multifaceted challenges we face.
